Check out the second episode of our series, 'The Music Room: When East Meets West'. To tie in with the opening of Ravi Shankar’s only opera 'Sukanya' in May 2017, our series will explore the dialogue between Classical Indian and Western music with the opera’s conductor David Murphy. 'The Music Room' will take the viewer on a journey through these traditions, examining how they connect on a deep level.
In this second film, we introduce raga, a concept in the Indian Classical music tradition similar to the melodic mode. David Murphy explores harmony and scale and how these notions differ and connect in Indian and Western Classical music. Using the Western violin, David shows how both ragas and western scales select notes from the harmonic series to create different atmospheres. This video also demonstrates 'Raga Hamsadhwani', 'Raga of the Swan' played on Indian violin by carnatic violinist Balu Raguraman.
The Bagri Foundation is delighted to support Ravi Shankar’s groundbreaking 'Sukanya', which he envisioned before his passing in December 2012 and outlined to his long-time collaborator David Murphy. Since, Murphy has worked with Shankar’s daughter Anoushka to bring the work to life. This innovative co-production between the Royal Opera House, London Philharmonic Orchestra and Leicester’s Curve theatre, interprets a story from the legendary Sanskrit epic of the 'Mahabharata'.
'Sukanya' will open at Curve Theatre, Leicester on Friday 12 May 2017. For more information and to book your tickets visit: www.bagrifoundation.org/ravishankarsukanya/
