Are your Zucchini and other squash plants covered in pests and fungus? Are your vines dying suddenly? Tired of dedicating a lot of water for the garden? Struggling to grow food in 100°F temperatures in summer? Why fix these problems with a ton of research and work when you can eliminate them?
If you can relate to these struggles that are common in zone 9, the Texas Gulf Coast, and many other gardens around the country, I think it’s time for a permanent summer squash replacement for your garden. In this episode I introduce you to Cucuzzi Gourd (a.k.a Cucuzza, Snake Bean Gourd, Italian Squash, Serpent of Sicily, Italian Edible Gourd, and many other names). This gourd is not just low maintenance, but for me it’s no maintenance!
If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll have a chance to win these seeds and more of my garden favorites at the end of the growing season!

Great video and nice set-up. Did you know you can also cook the leaves of cucuzzi plants? It's called Tenerumi. Do a search and you'll find various ways to cook the Tenerumi. They are delicious.

I did not know that! Depending on which name I used when I searched, I found it difficult to get a lot of clear information, so thank you!

I just discovered Cucuzza last year, Did 12 plants and got over 100 cucuzza. Yes they are great for roasting. battering and frying, pan searing. roasting. its by far the most verital squash and easiest to grow there is. Well except you need a trellis or a pretty tall fence

Yes. I loved growing mine last year, and then some volunteers showed up this year. Unfortunately the chickens scratched up most of the seedlings..

Where can you buy the seeds from and is there anything special you need to do to start the seeds?
@TurnYourHeadandScoff

Off and on these are sold by Baker Creek. I swapped them from another grower for Giant Zucca Gourd seeds. I do have most of my garden seeds from this year for purchase through my Instagram if you're looking for Texas grown or warm climate grown heirloom seeds.

You can keep the biggest gagootz and let it dry on the vine to get your own seeds.

This is my first time growing cucuzza. Im in Metro Austin and some of my leaves, well, no looky so good. I believe there are mites but im not sure how to get rid of them.

I'm so sorry! I don't recall if I had trouble with these leaves or not, but I will say that some gourds do not look as healthy as others. I usually don't treat issues, and my solution is to remove the problem. My best advice for next time is to double, triple check that your vines have really good airflow. I know this vine can really be a monster!

Is all the growth from a single plant?
@TurnYourHeadandScoff
@TurnYourHeadandScoff Год назад
I'm trying to recall from memory if this was one vine or two, but either way, the planting location was the same spot. So, this video represents the expected length of a single plant which based on the size of the chicken coop, it reached over 20' long in a single direction meaning that I could have sent an arm of the vine in the opposite direction for a total of 40'. I normally take a full season of growing before I ever make the video, so my memory isn't reliable anymore!!!

It hurts my ears the way you say the name of this fruit

Can you send me a correct pronunciation if I'm saying it incorrectly. I thought I had looked it up before I recorded, but I recorded this a very long time ago and don't know for sure.

@@TurnYourHeadandScoff For an American, it's closer to say goo-goo'-tz or goo-goo'-tza. The Sicilian "c" is said all the way in the back of the throat, so it sounds more like an American "g" than anything else. If you can make your "g" click a bit (like a glottal stop), then you'll sound more like a Sicilian! (Don't mind people who just criticize and don't teach. That's lame. Every community has them, and everyone is embarrassed by them.)

@@iluomopeloso thanks for the lesson! When you're screaming at a camera and sweating outside, pronunciation is low on the list! LOL
