This is a QUICK TIP video of using the miter saw's unappreciated knob that could be very useful in your woodworking. The precision is below the use of a dado stack used on a table saw, however to get a quick half lap joint for a piece or even a few pieces that required the cut, this may save you time.
I have been using this miter saw (Hitachi) for many years now and I have never thought of making a video like this until tonight. The miter saw is a 12" slider, although I do believe the same or similar knob is attached to other miter saws (been a while since I used the DeWalt miter saw).
We all know that a miter saw allows for easy cross cuts on pieces for wood projects, but now you will know the trick that many probably don't when using the special knob on the miter saw.
If you're miter saw is equipped with this knob, practice with it and don't forget to use a sacrificial fence! To be more accurate on the sacrificial fence against the miter saw fence, square both sides (the miter saw fence side and the cut side). Cut a piece that will fit the length of the miter saw fence and cut the width just short of the blade bottoming out (mid of miter saw blade). This will give you more precision and accuracy with your final cuts.
One additional tip when cutting this joint on the miter saw is when cleaning the base of the joint (running the board left and right), don't allow the piece to lift a HAIR, or the miter saw blade will cut that hair out. Make sure the piece stays flat against the sacrificial fence as well as the miter saw base.
I hope this video helps you in your wood shop and I hope it was able to expand your abilities with projects in the future!
