The Mysterious World of Antarctic Bacteria

Many bacteria that are frozen in Antarctic sea ice have the ability to capture sunlight energy in a way that is different from photosynthesis in plants, and is quite new to science. They do this somehow using rhodopsin proteins that occur in their cell membranes.
The results of this study will help understanding of this ability of the bacteria in many other ecosystems around the planet.

Amazing research! Glad you show the process of this type of work! it's not something we typically see. Excited for more!

Seriously one of the best channels on RU-vid. Fingers crossed for some more Wairarapa videos in the future. Loving the Antarctic series too. Keep up the great work.

Incredible day for filming by-the-look-of-it. Loved the seal looking back at you underwater "Hey, I'm naked here ...."

What’s in those yellow tents? Don’t tell me you’re sleeping on the snow in antarctica are you? Wouldnt you rather sleep in those metal shipping containers? Dont you have some kind of recreational vehicle on tracks and skis for sleeping in out there ? Great vid about Antarctic bacteria!

We sleep in the tents, with thick and very warm mattresses, two sleeping bags and a cover. They are actually very comfortable! 😴

Cool experiment. I'd be interested to know if the bacteria grow exclusively under the ice or are they dispersed throughout that part of the ocean?

Wow! I have followed current Science all my life since my Sixth Form days in the late 60s. Yet a bacterial alternative to photosynthesis has somehow previously escaped my notice. Seems a pretty big thing! I hope these studies are informative.

Really interesting! 5:45+ just wondering about potential contamination of samples if they’re not covered & protected from humans breathing on them whilst talking to camera!

Given certain unique particular points of view... Forever beyond our grasp and understanding... Some of what they do might be concerned to be kind of f-ed up..!! HaHa..!! I kid...that could quite literally be applied to just about anything really...xD =/\=

Hope you're sanitising equipment between sample sites. Otherwise you're part of the human problem :(
@OutThereLearning
@OutThereLearning Год назад
Thanks for comment. The equipment is thoroughly cleaned before leaving New Zealand which is the main contamination concern. The sites are all in the same environment which is not an issue - the ice is frozen out of sea water and will melt back again and be thoroughly mixed anyway.
