honestly SW has never depicted infantry combat well beyond a firefight between perhaps a squad or two in a corridor. Now I get why, our heroes getting flanked while pinned down by automatic weapons fire from positions 500 meters away while mortar shells rain down isn't very cinematic/easy to show in a single shot without zooming out really far.

Awakening of the Rebellion, a Empire at War mod. Has mortar teams set up within certain platoons and squads amongst infantry in the factions of the game. (Empire, Rebels, and Black Sun.) This mod really makes Star wars battles in this game, waaaay more realistic. If you wish to play that way. You can build an army of imperial regulars only and drown the enemies in your men's blood. Or do what most cheese players do and build nothing but AT-AT's and auto resolve a ground battle. Empire is a RTS made years and years ago. Can conquer the entire SW galaxy and fight ground and space battles controlling armies and fleets command and conquer style. Has thousands of mods. Awakening is my favorite. But thrawns revenge and Republic ar War are great ones too!

I think in battalions an option mortar section could be extremely valuable when attacking fortifications. Especially if the republic had EMP charges

It's good to have local fire support though. Until you gain air superiority, the odds of getting air support from fighters/bombers is slim, the star destroyers in most cases are usually preoccupied with space battles, etc... not to mention the time it would take to request those assets, adjusting fire to location of engagement, time till splash from air and orbital support. If you remember in the genesis arc of the clone wars, they couldn't send in bombers because they were participating in other missions. Having local assets to engage more heavily structures or entrenched enemies from a distance is always a good option. Have as many possibilities to engage the enemy as possible to give you better odds of success. The problem with star wars is that we see everything from the aspect of the highest ranking and most important characters in the series. They participate in the highest priority missions and whatever assets they need they get whenever. The average clone who isn't fighting side by side with their jedi general won't always have access to those assets whenever they want.

An orbital strike could also be limited by distance to friendlies. Those shipboard weapons can be rather large, mortars may be more useful when utter obliteration of an area isn't within safe for local units.

@@shawnmay8794 Except to get on the ground, you need to be dropped in. LAATs being the default troop transport could stay on station and provide fire support with their ball turrets and mass driver launchers, defeating any initial defenses before returning to their Venators to rearm. I believe mortars to be ineffective even if orbital bombardments weren't a thing. So much more *better* tech and artillery in the GAR's arsenal!

Plamsa weapons are line of sight only. Aka the bolt travels straight and only straight. Munitions can arc over stuff, like say cover, to get enemy you cannot see. Also you can guide the munitions so you can loop it around. Plus you can vary the payload as mention in video. From High Explosive to Ion only to harmless smoke you get alot of flexibility in a simple package. And in Star wars, munitions often ignore most plamsa shields

Among the very reasons plasma based guns were used and phased out most projectile weapons,one of them is no bullet drop. Which also means no indirect fire from such systems. Hence,the majority of indirect fire weapons are projectiles in one form or another.

It's more that it isn't that writers don't know or care about them. It's not that interesting for most people to hear about a couple riflemen hiding in a foxhole while under fire from a mortar platoon 5 km away compared to a heroic charge. It's the same reason why the bad guys in star wars never seem to get more than a few machine guns or heaven's forbid, some actual howitzers with a range of more than a few 100 meters.
