It may be that we live in an age of hyper-connectivity and “big data,” but I contend that the fundamental reason why we’ve managed to construct the most highly unsustainable culture the Earth has ever seen is precisely because we have not been taught to see the connections.
Justin Mog is assistant to the provost for sustainability initiatives, a post created in 2009 to coordinate efforts to advance environmental, social and economic responsibility at the University of Louisville. Dr. Mog served with the Peace Corps in Paraguay for three years before coming to UofL in 2009. He also has worked as an environmental educator at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and has conducted research on sustainable rural development as a Fulbright Scholar in the Philippines.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

That chart suggests land devoted to grazing is well-below the "overshoot" threshold and has remained constant. Doesn't make sense considering land being cleared for cattle-ranching is still one of the leading causes of deforestation.
@SolarScion

You can also add most of the agricultural land use to animals as it goes to feed the continually eliminated and replaced meat/dairy and egg industries, not to mention much of the fossil fuel expenditure goes to animal ag.

It is not the cattle that is the problem but how they are raised. Cattle raised by modern methods are very destructive to the ecosystem and our health. Cattle raised by wholistic methods regenerate marginal land and desert and make them fertile for other crops providing us with healthy food.. Cattle when managed properly put back into the land what they take out. Other forms of agriculture take out more than they put back unless outside amendments are added and that depletes the fertility somewhere else.

There is still a huge carbon footprint building that electric car, disposing of the plastics after it's junked. Also buying the newest model every year. One could go on and on. The problem is human greed.

What you're really saying is one could find excuse after excuse to not make an effort. Electric cars do pollute less than fossil fuel burning cars. It's not zero sum, it's not all or nothing. Electric cars are man times better for the environment than combustion engine cars, but of course, they aren't pollution free.

Public banks would create debt free money to spend into the economy that could create the production needed to build and design any system we want and need to be sustainable in every aspect of life. Debt free money for purpose is the key. This is more efficient and reliable than crowdfunding and it would create a stable flow of money into the economy and be recycled as it is slowly taxed back out of society. Or it could be left in if needed and more debt free money could be created and spent into the economy. It all depends on the specific need at the time. Create policies around money wisely and to benefit society the best way possible. All money as a debt isn't working and is causing greater and greater need for profit and consumption as a side affect.

Well, there's no "balance" if the human population keeps growing (same thing as economic growth, really).

Certainly population is part of the equation. But consumption, at the moment, is the zeroth-order term. When each American consumes the same as 13 Brazilians or 28 Bangladeshis, the spotlight needs to be on consumption… which is to day, on the people causing the most damage, using more than their fair share...

So true. The environmentalist Derrick Jensen had an excellent suggestion for voluntarily reducing human population: Each couple agreeing to having only ONE child. Not a final solution, but imo a good start.

Driving an electric car is not simply moving the emissions from the tailpipe to a coal power station.Alot of people don't know this but it takes a vast amount of electricity to refine oil into Gas, Diesel, etc So, instead of putting electricity into refining Gas, then transporting that fuel to a filling station (burning more fuel), so it can then be burnt in your car, you can just use that electricity for moving the car in the first place.

Life is inherently an unsustainable shitshow, always been that way. Our version's falling apart before our eyes. And there's absolutely nothing anybody could do about it anymore. He knows but tries to con you out of your resources to sustain him longer towards the end. Right right right right...what a turd of a human being.

the economy has to solve the problem- thus a carbon/pollution tax is the way to go- nothing will happen without it- that has been proven over the last 30 years since the first energy crisis- nothing improves is we subsidize the pollution!

No answers here. None. Here's my observation of "environmentalists"...when the temperature is below 70°F, they've got their heat on. When it's above 70°F, they've got their air conditioning on. That's for their cars and their homes. I live in a temperate climate. I almost NEVER see anyone with their car windows open. I'm the only one.
@dollysouthwell7189
@dollysouthwell7189 5 лет назад
what about home windows? We "condition" our home's air only about 3 months /year.
@mattyoungdma
@mattyoungdma 4 года назад
I am an environmentalist and keep my heat at 62 in the winter and I don't have air conditioning. Plus I only had to fill my gas tank three times in the past year because I always commute by bike, even in the winter. So I guess your observation doesn't really hold water and is probably only self-serving.
