The dollar sign should precede the dollar amount...now that I think of it, I’m not sure why it’s not correct both ways. When speaking the dollar amount out loud, the number of dollars/pounds/euros/yen/deneros/etc. ALWAYS precedes the money-unit-name...hmm...

I loved introducing my partner to Nathan and this show at the same time. When people ask me what it’s about I just say, “well imagine everything you’ve been nervous about could be rehearsed to an obsessive point of detail. And then just think of all the emotions that you could go through while doing this. It’s a roller coaster.”

I think the most brilliant line in the whole show comes from the Single mother in the season finale, I'm paraphrasing heavily but her insistence on the fact that she's not worried about her son, because she herself is a factor in his life - It's like a perfect answer to the whole shows thesis - why get lost in multiple iterations of rehearsal and focus on all the different possible factors and variables when you can be confident in yourself being a constant.

I really had a breakdown at the kid's attachment to Nathan. Children can't developmentally distinguish pretend life and real life like that, at least at that age. Which is a criticism of the entire child acting industry, Nathan was just more aware.
@mafa7920
@mafa7920 Год назад
Idgi-- Nathan 'critiqued' the child acting industry by mentally traumatizing a child? Why is everyone kissing Nathan's ass like he's above reproach? Yes he exhibits a marginal level of self awareness in his work but that doesn't justify hurting KIDS in the process. Ends do not justify means. Call out child exploitation wherever it occurs or don't pretend that you give a rat's ass
@sinnsage

as interesting as it was to watch, i hope nathan moves away from using child actors in his show from now on. i think that would be the ethical thing to do, considering children can't really consent to acting. it's one thing to agree to be on a tv series like this as an adult who is aware of how the editing process can go in ways that are not going to be in their favor, it's another to arrange this strange situation for children through their parents who aren't really considering how this will affect their child
@monarch3495
@monarch3495 Год назад
Everything Ro described for the finale is a massive ethical violation and downright cruel when you know how child’s brain development works. Kids are learning to separate fiction from reality. What nathan did is f*cling with a kid’s grasp on reality. Alyson Stoner, a child actress has talked about how traumatizing acting through scenes could be because as a child you can’t separate your self from the scene well. He should’ve been told to kick rocks when he said he wanted to basically copy the boy and mom. Hope that child is doing well because Nathan sure didn’t help

That is exactly the point Nathan is partly making with this show. He is showing to the world how massively unethical tv, and especially reality tv, CAN be. Its making the viewer question if the reality behind the fiction they see on tv should make them uncomfortable. Think about the whole pipeline of people that said "ok, this is fine" to make that one child actor have that experience. Nathan was just the person who came up with the idea. Then you have producers saying "ok lets do this", you have casting agencies saying "ok, lets do this", you have parents sign their children up to these casting agencies saying "ok, lets do this", and theres probably way more "ok, lets do this" from on set supervisors, union reps, the network, etc. Nathans MO has always been to show just how far people are willing to "ok, lets do this". In Nathan for You, it was to make you laugh. In The Rehearsal, its not only to make you laugh, but to make you feel uncomfortable, and to see that "hey, maybe someone shouldnt have said Ok, lets do this." Nathan is clearly not some sociopath who pushes the envelope just because he can, hes pushing the envelope to show that you shouldnt be able to push the envelope so far. He wouldnt have made that last episode if he wasnt worried about the system. It was a clear "hey look, this entertainment comes at a price"-episode.
@Hip.Username
@Hip.Username Год назад
@@FORRESTtheunoriginal it's possible that he's this self-aware, but it seems more like he was learning and realizing as he was going as well. A season 2 would be a sign that he's no better than anyone else saying "ok let's do this" and this may not exactly be what he intended to point out. regardless, he can leave out children who didn't ask to be a part of this

I think its important we get media like The Rehearsal that makes the viewer question what they just saw, how they REALLY feel about what they saw, and how everything they just saw is potentially happening all over other shows they might be watching. Because he is only using resources that tv shows have been using for decades, but he is using them in new ways. There are child actors who might not know what acting is. There are people willing to make it to tv, even if it means stalking some rando to get through an acting class. There are incredibly questionable reality tv shows that find ways to pressure people into signing release forms. Any aspect of the Rehearsal that has been criticized, is an aspect that has been a hidden trait of tv productions in the past, and only now its getting a spotlight when its shown in this absurd light. The Rehearsal is an important show. And i just wish there were more shows like this getting funded.

Idk.. I just feel like the show is entirely too convoluted and the average viewer is going to consume media the way that they always do: without spending any large amounts of time examining the fucking ethics involved in the production. They see the finished product. I’m autistic and have spent so so much time reflecting on and examining boundaries-especially when it comes to comedy. I understand that everyone has a different idea of what is or isn’t ethical. And it’s similar with what people find funny or not funny. Something being unethical or uncomfortable doesn’t automatically render it humorless. I feel like the discussion around Nathan Fielder often gets stuck at “what is comedy” instead of “what is ethical.” Where do we draw the line? Who gets to draw the line? I think if Nathan’s persona was any different than it is, it would be much more apparent how manipulative he can be haha.
@moonbread2334
@moonbread2334 Год назад
on the flip side, I don't even think he *could* be manipulative to his extent if it weren't for his unassuming persona. I identify with his awkwardness/shyness and sometimes I feel a little vindicated by the fact that he's almost using those traits (traits that are traditionally made fun of, esp in many forms of mainstream comedy) to get away with stuff and wield control over situations.

I haven’t seen the show but I am assuming that he is using kids of all ages and so assuming very young children and this show doesn’t seem to be some regular acting gig. The fact that a child actor developed an emotional attachment from play acting with Nathan should tell them that it went too far. Childrens minds are so impressionable. I recently read jennette mccurdys book and child acting is something I just can’t really make up my mind on whether it’s ethical or not. @willjones4992
@willjones4992 Год назад
@@shannon322 I think the point was to distort the audience's preconcieved notion of what the rehearsal was. The back half of the show, and I see the turning point for this being the OD scene, is completely about the moral ramifications of the rehearsal and what Nathan's actions imply. That's where NFY and The Rehearsal are fundamentally different. NFY plays it all for laughs and leaves everything behind at the end of the episode. There aren't on screen ramifications after the episode is over. Nathan gets to play in his silly little world with zero consequences (or so we're shown as the audience of nfy). The Rehearsal removes the "when the cameras stop rolling" sort of boundary you typically get. As the rehearsal goes on, it continually focuses on the ways in which Nathan, and by relation the Audience with our un-critical consumption and participation, are culpable in hurting other people.

@@saltlickbeau can't speak for them, but for me it's due to vicarious embarrassment. I am so sensitive to embarrassing situations on TV, movies, music videos, etc. that I literally have to leave the room when they come on. His whole fucking "comedy routine" is just incredibly uncomfortable for me due to how the "humor" relies on embarrassing people (said in air quotes because I will never understand the allure of that type of humor). It's why I detest shows like The Office and Shameless, much to dismay of hard-core fans of those shows. Hell, anytime my fam chooses to watch Shameless, I leave the damn room until they finish and would do the same for Nathan's content. It just makes my skin crawl. Edit: minor typo.

Nathan is a menace to society, I had to stop watchcing Nathan for You despite finding it HILARIOUS because at some point i unconsciously started questioning things like, are these people ever let in on the joke, do they have the option to opt out of being in the final cut once they realize they were tricked?, are they ever told the advice they were given was purposefully wrong? Then I saw the first episode of The Rehersal and I thought oh this is MUCH better the person knows they are on a show and they actually get help for their issue.... THEN the fake family saga started and ended with the kid traumatized and i was like dumfounded.

This is the perfect description of how I’ve felt with this show. The whole anti-semitism part made me so viscerally uncomfy (I’m a hypersensitive autistic person for context, so the emotional turmoil was enough to make me have to leave the room) and ofc for good reason, but I had to remind myself that is in fact a show and has a point, but I was genuinely like “what the hell did I just watch?” in both instances

there’s also the issue that what the actual context of a moment in his shows is obscured. he narrates a context for these people but i’ve read many accounts for nathan for you that show a lot of the storyline was pushed together to present a certain narrative. i remember specifically the episode where nathan was trying to get that guy a girlfriend that the girl from that episode said that how she got involved in the show was different from how the show presented it. she knew the two guys were different people the whole time and the presence for meeting was different than what nathan narrated. i think when people discuss this show, they don’t keep in mind that what is being presented to us isn’t necessarily real. some people literally talk about these shows as if everything we see is exactly how it happened and that is very perplexing to me and definitely muddies the waters on conversations around the show. how can you speak clearly on the ethics of a show you don’t even realize isn’t completely True Events? it brings me back to how people were talking about bo burnam’s Inside. bo didn’t just turn the camera on and live his life, he was performing. while i’m sure he tried to convey his very real emotions, they were practiced and performed emotions. i think the video on this very topic by philosophy tube has a lot of interesting things to say on that regard. funny because that video came out before Inside and The Rehearsal and yet people seem to have completely disregarded all those points lol poor abby she tries so hard to teach us. honestly my biggest takeaway from The Rehearsal was the mind bending aspect of acting. and nathan definitely tries to extend that hyper reality to everyday people by showing how our minds can delude ourselves. i think it was perfectly set up in the first episode that the man created a nightmare world for himself by worrying so much about his friends’ opinions of him. at the beginning of the episode he implies that his friend is violent and vindictive and at the end of the episode she literally doesn’t care at all. and by doing this rehearsal with nathan, he only reinforces this alternate reality where his lie will far reaching negative impacts by literally acting it out with people who look like the people he knows in a place that is perfectly copied. i realized how messed up this whole premise was when nathan had him practice mourning their friendship in a replica of his apartment. the comedy, for me, came when it was revealed that it was fine. she did not care at all lol and you get to walk away with our protagonist of the episode feeling good about things. but because nathan is a genius, that was only the set up and you get to see how far this unreality can go and how the situations can be totally off base but the emotions and how it all affects you is definitely real. this show is great propaganda against overthinking lolol
