Agree there. Definite one i would travel 24 hours on a flight. The outdoor ones just brings out the extra Magic. Seen many National gigs. The one that outstands is Dublin gardens. And can you believe it! Sunshine galore!
He is so selfless that he almost gets overlooked in the greatness of this band...but Bryan Devendorf is perhaps the biggest reason their music is so magical. His subtle textures and syncopated grooves are an indelible part of their song structures. They are simple at first glance but have just the right amount of embellishments and accents to keep them fresh and exciting. Lets all raise a glass to their amazing drummer....

Excuse me, sir. But there's nothing in the phrase "boring nonsense" would apply on the entirety of this video. Well, for me at least. And kudos to them for uploading the whole concert with amazing quality.

Once I bumped into Matt accidentally after a gig in Vienna. The only thing I could think of saying was: "was the cable long enough?" He said they always test it before the show. It was fun.
I have them live six times now. The first time was in a very small venue called the basement and Matt swung on a high pipe screaming Mr November. I fell in love with them ever since. It was crazy to see.
Completely agree. This is a seminal moment for me. Matt banging his head with the mike in Terrible love after Mr. November, crowd surfing and the epic freak out of Humiliation is just a pinochle moment.
Dear lord this is one of the greatest performances of all time. In Mr. November he wanders into the crowd as they feed the mic cable to him. While he sings, "I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders," the crowd picks him up and carries him.
I watched this when it streamed live and I’ve watched it regularly for the past five years. I use it to relive the two times I’ve seen them live until I get a chance to do so again.
Old man, bored, drunk, alone on Christmas and half a decade late, but I'm pretty sure it's the percussion choices that makes their music for me. There are a lot of bands that do what they've done and just as well, but the deliberate decision, or happy accident of where the percussion is make their music just a cut above and, for me, timeless and well worth revisiting.
@@TheColourOfSpring- Saw them perform All the Wine in Berkeley a month ago, such a treat. They performed two days so I made sure to go to both days knowing the setlists would be different.
No, that's just you thinking that because you're a big fan, and 70 others agreeing with you for the same reason. It's like thinking that the woman you love is the most beautiful woman in the world. it's not true.
If you think the woman you love is the most beautiful in the world you are a lucky man indeed. As for the band, I can't comment. Haven't made up my mind. But I've never felt that way about a woman either.
Back for the trillionth time. This has been a favorite band of mine for the past 15+ years and they just keep getting more and more astonishing! So fortunate to have seen them live, and looking forward to many more live performances to come!
this was one of the greatest performances I've ever watched. Not even singing wise.. Just the way he interacts with the crowd and throws his emotions out like Bruce Lee punches... God.. I cant even describe the feeling this entire performance gave me. It literally brings you through ups and downs.. A complete rollercoaster ride!
@@mskcrc There is no generic 'post-punk revival', just as there was no generic post-punk. Bands such as Joy Division and The Cure were vastly different -- then placing them against a band like The Sound, there's even more variety. PPR ranges from The Strokes, to Arctic Monkeys, to these wonderful people. This is music in its purest form; just enjoy.
I've seen The National four times now. So it's crazy to me that this only came out in 2017. Because I only got into them through this very video. It just got recommended to me one day, I scrubbed through it and I was hooked. Not instantly but I kept coming back to it. I ended up downloading this and listening to it obsessively for weeks every morning on my commute before buying Trouble Will Find Me on vinyl. My first The National record and to this day probably still my favourite. I almost ended up paying $250 to see them live that year but luckily got away with paying a scalper $50. It was an amazing show. Whenever I face heartbreak, I put on Trouble Will Find Me and I feel like Matt is talking about exactly what I'm going through. Their music's not lost their magic for me, not after hundreds, probably thousands of re-listens. "I'm not alone / I'll never be / ... / When they ask / What do I see / I say a bright, white, beautiful heaven hanging over me"
I've seen The National a couple of times and appreciate their music and aesthetic. At Bonnaroo, Matt introduced a song as another sad song - one of the other guys asked: "Do we have any happy songs?"
I think my favorite part of this whole thing was that moment at 1:35:23 when the intro has been building and building, and then you hear those familiar notes start and you can just feel the energy of the audience... It always gives me chills.
And then, in blissful release, the word 'today' bursts through the clouds of those oh-so-familiar notes; it's like magic -- sorrowful and painful magic that Matt himself feels as he begins to sway his head. Everything here is of the highest level of beauty; it's truly such a treat.
Well I have been on one of their shows when they were not as famous yet, at least not where I am from, needles to say I was the only one screaming my head off at the first note, while people around me were just giving me *this* look. I regret nothing
When a band writes songs that heal you, make you smile, make you cry, etc, etc. What a great band. I can't stop listening. Never will. This is like medicine.
The climax of this set with is pure musical joy for all when Matt joins the crowd; then the singalong, lights on the crowd Vanderlyle with bumping fists and finishing without the mic. It's beautiful to watch, brings a tear to the eye
Sydney Opera House only had temporary permission from the recording company, I believe. I reached out to their support team over a year ago when this first was removed. Amazing show. Happy to see it back on the web. :)
along the years, I've come and gone through a long spectrum of music tastes. this band was very important to me in my teenage years, and when I listen to them now that I'm older, I can only think that it is a band that will forever remain in my soul, no matter who I become. They're timeless
I couldn't have said it better myself. I first discovered them nearly ten years ago at 17 and now that I'm 26 I'm still as enamoured with them as ever.
Honestly, this was/is the best video on youtube. I would have paid serious amounts of money to buy this, after it was taken down by The House. Week made -long live The National!
Seriously, this band has never made a bad album, and their concerts are sick!!! Absolute geniuses the whole lot of them. I love them, they are my favourite band going. Matt you're a poet on the level of Bukowski!!!
This is my favorite concert, ever, and my second fav performance of 'about today' (the other is that instrumental with violin they did for Spin magazine).
Mr November is just the spark that makes their shows so great...the way he walks among people like if it's nobody's business and then it's just the contrary...epic. Love that part every time I see it. I simply adore The National.
Saw them in Chicago at a small theater and they are the best live band I've ever seen. Matt was popping up in different parts of the venue singing amongst the crowd and just killed it. One thing i love about them is they love playing for their fans and make each show personal.
That's crazy, the instruments sound crispier live. Matt sounds different, but I've seen them live and the energy they bring is unbeatable@@PoisonessKkj
I will literally die of happiness if I ever see them live. I wish I didn't live in this small country that never gets any good concerts... I love you guys so much. ♥
I’ve seen The National once before I knew any of their music and it was a standout concert of my life. Absolutely superb live! We were booked to see them again when Covid first hit and The National cancelled their tour. One day again I hope.
these guys are great. when their single came out here in 2010 or whenever i didn't dig it that much but recently i've gone deeper into the music and it's awesome. this show is great
"Hey Dad, why is my sister named Rose?" "Because your mother loves roses." "Ah. Thanks, Dad!" "No Problem, Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks live at the Sydney Opera House."
To be honest this is my favourite band since 2009 already Kurt. But Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks is one of my least favourite songs. It's okay on record but I don't like it when they do it live because they mean the won't close the show with About Today.
Thanks so much for putting this up, and at such great quality! It's wonderful. I don't understand why more bands don't... it just makes me want to see them live even more.
I'm here again. 1:40:52 that part right before one of my favourite songs is killing me every time. I wish I was there, at this concert. So breathtaking. Watching this is like being in one of the most beautiful dreams ever.
Danke für diese wunderbare Musik! Kenne diese Band, erst vier Monate und bin jeden Tag mehr begeistert. Zeitlose Songs, die mich vergessen lassen, schon auf die 60 zu zu gehen.
What an amazing concert! Really looking forward to seeing them live when they tour to promote the new album which I'm sure will be another masterpiece!
One of the thing that stands out to me with The National is they always work with talented artists and allow them the space needed to be successful. From engineers to designers to lighting. Always just right
This version of "Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks" is so beautiful! What an amazing sing along! I got to see them at Red Rocks recently and they closed the show the same way, it was magical.
I've had the pleasure of seeing them live twice and they are honestly the best live band on earth..they put so much thought and emotion into everything they do that I forgive the minor errors..makes it all the more genuine for me. A perfect example of the whole being greater than the individual..each one adds something exceptional to the sound..perfect in my opinion
Moved to NJ a few years back. For some reason, I feel so comforted that I'm that much closer to Sufjan, The Gregory Brothers, and The National. Not that I'll ever meet them. But NYC is more grand because they are there.
