The Ohio band play Nobody Else Will Be There from their new album Sleep Well Beast. You can listen to the full interview here: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05h9svv
Restraint is so much a part of their technique. Even when the song breaks out in "hey baby," it is subdued, almost embarrassed and secretive in tone. No bands today employ this purposeful de-intensifying to such effect.
Stacy: I could never really describe why I felt The National so captivating(as a casual piano player as well...). Your description fits the bill perfectly. Thanks :D
One of my girl friends from University said once upon.. to Me... A boy with a guitar mayby a pair for You.. Do not belive her, only Tolek Banan liked where a girl played guitar... Ha ha ha 🌻🐪🐓🦇❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟❤️
When I need to calm down, I lie down on the carpet, put my headphones on, my dog lies down too and puts his head on my chest and I listen to this song on repeat. He falls asleep and I am calmer than ever. It kinda became a ritual.
Every time I hear those opening notes on the piano, it takes me straight back to the first time I heard their last album. And the shiver this song gave me. I was wondering how the hell anything on the album was going to top this? And nothing does. Goosebumps every time. In a career of massive, massive creative highs, this is right up there with their greatest moments. *slams fist into chest where heart roughly is*
You said we're not so tied together What did you mean? Meet me in the stairwell in a second For a glass of gin Nobody else will be there then Nobody else will be there Nobody else will be there then Nobody else will be there Can you remind me the building you live in I'm on my way It's getting cold again but New York's gorgeous It's a subway day Nobody else will be there then Nobody else will be there Nobody else will be there then Nobody else will be there Why are we still out here? Holding our coats We look like children Goodbyes always take us half an hour Can't we just go home? Hey baby, where were you back then? When I needed your hand I thought that when…
As I replied above to someone who commented on my 2-year-old post, so much about listening to the Ntl. is about mood and moment. A year ago, you were in a dark room, listening. That's a poem.
Can't get enough of this song. Simple, mellow, and moving. You can feel the coolness of the season and the emotion of the moment. Wish more music was like this. Well done guys.
I’m imaging a close friend moving away, not to be seen again for years. Such an utterly heart-wrenching and beautiful song. I can hardly listen to it now because of its overpowering melancholy. But when I do listen to it, man. I’m transported.
I lost it in the very beginning and never found ever since he said “hey baby...”. The most beautiful song ever. I wouldn’t mind getting lost in it forever

It's hard to create a sound with so much passion and fullness as y'all have with this song. There's so much emotion that it makes me want to cry and fist bump at the same time, especially as the bridge to the ending verse. I can honestly say that I've listened to this track list straight since February and I'm just now starting to to hear some of these songs for the first time. Amazing CD, amazing sound. Thanks to Grey whale here in SLC for introducing me to you all.
Can't believe I'm only hearing this now! Been hung up on the 'Sea of love' for too long it seems. My next fix, can't stop listening to this! What a band!
Just beautiful... I have loved the National since that first album and for any band to remain so consistantly brilliant is quite remarkable . A unique group in every way ...
It is said that music is the language of the soul; this music puts that to rest. I first heard this in the short film, THE NEIGHBOR’S WINDOW , and I felt so sad. Such a beautiful song!
What a band!!! Not many modern bands put out such a vast collection of classics usually 1 or 2 good albums then they lose it, the National have 7 quality albums and the other 2 u haven't listened to enough to give an opinion it's refreshing to hear such good music in modern times
Heard this song for the first time during mid of 2020 during the Pandemic stuck in a foreign country for 5 months while losing people to covid, shoulder tumor surgery and going through a break up the day of surgery...Damn what a dark agonizing painful time that was while hearing this song day and night. Thank God it passed
I’ve been a fan for so long, and their catalogue is so vast, but I genuinely think this might be their greatest moment. They’ve basically become the band that R.E.M. were at that point when R.E.M. we’re unstoppable. Stepped in their shoes and gone next level. What. A. Song. And this live version is absolute killer.
What I wouldnt give to have you here and whisper in your ear "hey baby" one more time while we danced. Your time was cut too short my love, I'll find you again when it's my time and we can dance together for eternity
Great band. So different from any other groups with sound, style, performance and creativity. My favourites tracks: 1) Fake empire 2) England 3) Terrible Love 👍😎
@@LM-uq9nv I have these albums The National: Alligator, Boxer & High violet. I ain't sure if I will get all their music. I just think you will listen and learn from their sound. 😇 enjoy the experience
@@LM-uq9nv I wouldn't mind seeing them live. I live in the UK. So really difficult to see them on tour. I don't always like going to Music Festivals, because the atmosphere might be better, however you can't beat a more intimate reaction and connection from a small gig. 🎤🎻🤳encore
@@juju5568 I agree, smaller venues can be great. Take heart, It looks like you're not alone in being unable to see them; their shows are all postponed for the time being.
Lol he did the same thing at his concert yesterday where he would use the instrumental parts to walk back to his drink and sip it, except at yesterdays concert it wasn't a non-alcoholic beverage because he was half way to hammered. So he was drunk enough to the point where you could see he was drunk and it was amusing, but he could still perform amazingly. Near the concert he said this concert was like one of his dreams where he would be playing in a vineyard and lots of people were there, it was a beautiful day and he looked "fucking awesome".
Still going mighty strong. I think this is the best recording of this song that there is. I love it when a band you love doesn't just die and get worse and worse. Gives you hope.
I liked the way they started one of their gigs at Manchester Apollo in September 2017 with this song (and presumably for many other shows around that time too), in obviously this very low key manner, which made quite a change from other shows I've been to, where bands often start at full throttle - wonderfully understated.
The short film 'Neighbor's Window ' introduced me to this masterpiece. This song is going to stay with me like forever. This song takes me to some other world. This song is my motivation song , it gives me some kind of hope that everything will be fine and will make sense one day. Because at the end It's only you only you because at the end Nobody else will be there then.
