maybe I listen more than you think and I can tell that somebody sold you we said we'd never let anyone in we said we'd only die of lonely secrets the system only dreams in total darkness why are you hiding from me we're in a different kind of thing now all night you're talking to god I thought that this would all work out after awhile now you're saying that I'm asking for too much attention ??? faith is light enough for this place we said we'd only die of lonely secrets the system only dreams in total darkness why are you hiding from me we're in a different kind of thing now all night you're talking to god I can't explain it any other way
It's peppy and upbeat, yet also very calming and lowkey. Hope you're doing alright, remember you're valid and can always talk to a family member or loved one
I remember playing Fifa 18, with this song playing. My favourite team is Valencia CF I remember this song played just after I got the first Champions league for Valencia in my manager mode.
The National puts out album 2013 when I graduate high school. The National puts out album 2017 when I graduate college. Don't worry guys I'll get working on grad school.
Was blessed to have witnessed this live at Bonnaroo 2019 under a June full moon and let me tell you...I have never felt something so powerful in my LIFE!!! What a gift to music.
Matt: "I’m going very dark with the new National record, which is a place I love to go,” he said. “People have always described our music as dark and say it goes very melancholy, somber places. They haven’t heard anything yet! This next thing is crazy.” Can`t fucking wait for september!
thanks for the quote : ) it's also interesting that I don't really find their music dark- instead, I always feel like it's comforting or it tries to offer some sort of salvation(not sure if I'm making much sense
The five guitar buzz notes throughout gets me SO jazzed. Just woke me up - hearing it for the first time and each time since. THEN the SO tight guitar solo in the middle. Drums, vocals, lyrics, writing, guitars, all the perfect instruments. Gawd - so great!
I actually discovered this last year working at a festival they were one of the main headline acts after Florence and the machine the lead singer put on a passionate performance to this song and right then I knew I was hooked.
This guitar solo just instantly made this one of my favorite songs by these guys. I am seriously jamming with my fake guitar right now. Incredible song!
[Verse 1] Maybe I listen more than you think I can tell that somebody sold you We said we’ve never let anyone in We said we’d only die of lonely secrets [Pre-Chorus] The system only dreams in total darkness Why are you hiding from me? We’re in a different kind of thing now All night you’re talking to God [Verse 2] I thought that this would all work out after a while Now you’re saying that I’m asking for too much attention Also no other faith is light enough for this place We said we’d only die of lonely secrets [Pre-Chorus] The system only dreams in total darkness Why are you hiding from me? We’re in a different kind of thing now All night you’re talking to God [Chorus] I cannot explain it Any other, any other way I cannot explain it Any other, any other way
I could literally listen to this song 24 hrs a day ....my neighbours wouldn't appreciate it though : ) Best band ever and I am really glad they are coming back this year!
I remember during this soundtrack on the menu I received my first Icon in FIFA ever, I was so excited, when I listen to this I enjoy the beauty of this song, but as well as the great moment I received an Icon from a pack and screamed at 03:00 AM. good moments :)
I'm so excited. Gearing up to get some tix. Wife and I are planning a trip from Maryland to Chicago in December to see them. Nothing else could get us to Chicago, especially in Winter.
I am! I have been a music fan since the 1970s, and used to have wide-ranging taste in music -- pop, rock, alternative, classic rock, metal, country, rap, disco (but not jazz, never jazz). About 10 years ago I started to get heavy into melancholy music -- like Death Cab for Cutie, Damien Rice, Ryan Adams (I had already been a fan of Morrissey and Leonard Cohen). Then in 2010 I heard The National for the first time (on Sirius Coffeehouse). Wow! They've really put it together so perfectly, from the music to the lyrics to the voice. They are the first band that I can listen to without getting bored and without skipping songs. Instead of getting bored, the songs get better with each listen until the point that each one, when it starts, feels like an old friend coming to visit. In 2013 I stopped listening to other music altogether. They ruined all other music for me, damn them! Even their B-Sides are amazing (eg, Tall Saint, Love is a Blindness, Santa Clara, Walk Off, Rylan).
Killer song. The first two times I heard it, I wasn't sure... but after only hearing it twice I found myself humming and singing it throughout the day. Now I can't stop listening! So excited for the album!
Worked at a bar in the summer of 2017. Had a nice summer job. Indie and alternative songs just like this one were played the whole time. Next year the bar closed. It was a great place, introduced me to some amazing music. The National, The War On Drugs, The Horrors, etc.
Recalling the time I saw the National live at the PNE in Vancouver, outside in the pouring rain - this song will be tremendous as a live version with a large audience. So much energy in that guitar riff.

Lately I've been thinking about the relationship between ontology (being) and epistemology (knowing), so that's what this song makes me think of. What I really want to do is collapse the binary between the two, where being is knowing, and knowing, being; that is all we know on earth, and all we need to know. No, but for real, the idea is that the only thing you can know for certain is your own being, and your being is constituted by what you know (where "know" is extend to mean not only cognitive knowledge but also emotion and sensory perception [although of course the distinction among these things is arbitrary]). Here, I think we're talking about a relationship, and... How their knowledge of each others' minds is limited. Well, that's not all there is to it, but I think that's part of it.
Sergio Olaciregui "experimental vibe"?! Lmfao it's nothing new to what they've done in the past... Sounds like a left out of the EL VY project honestly....
subwaysurfer hahaha well sure experimenting with some new sounds with the band as a whole but yeah same 'the national' sound to it. Definitely playing with more electronics on this one tho.
I had already lessened this music but I don't no where ;-; I think it was in fifa 18... I have certainly now. Oh hell it was from fifa 18, now I remember everything!!!
A new The National song - like nearly all of their output, after a few listens it's growing and massaging emotional and pleasure centres of my mind I wasn't necessarily aware of... what an amazing band. Cannot wait for the tour.
My least favorite thing about listening to really good music is that it keeps me up all night listening to it. I have midterms tomorrow, and here I am at 1:25 AM on a Sunday when I should be asleep,or at least studying.
Fantastic stuff. Great thing about The National you can keep listening every song and eventually you loved them all. I used to hate Mistaken for Strangers and Bloodbuzz Ohio but after listening to each of them 100-150 times I love them. September 8th is finally getting real close.
