What a great song. My son gets me hooked on a lot of alternative bands and these guys are one of them. I'm 67 now and I really like this band.

My little brother has severe bipolar type I and watching this broke my heart. When Matt got to the line "Tranquilize the ocean/between the poles," I knew it was about about this dizzying, terrifying and disorienting disorder. He's on meds and doing much better now, but there were several chaotic years and this captures the experience in a devastatingly beautiful way.

Phoebe is phenomenal

Along with Jason Isbell, The national have been the band that’s been beside me for 15 years of ups and down with depression, anxiety, addiction, and wrestling with my faith. Things have been a lot better over the past 4-5 years, but after turning 40 this year, I’ve had some rough months. And then this song comes out, and once again speaks directly to my soul. When my son was born little, and my anxiety was at its worse, “I’m afraid of everyone” was the song that moved me most. This one is an instant classic.

Wow, not just the song is beautiful... The video is an ode to a gorgeous brotherhood. Love the lyrics, the arrangement... The camera use, the intentional poor editing (amateurism like a pro)... And Tom just playing around with Matt. Emotional, intimate and artistic. I love it.

I'm in my mid 50s with thick skin and yet somehow this song has reduced me to tears. It's so darkly beautiful, it has sellotaped the fragments of my broken mind together again, at least for a little while 🎼🖤🎼

Truly so happy to see Tom! This is a fantastic video. Love the song - I was taken aback at first at how straightforward the lyrics are compared to much of Matt's other writing, but I think it makes sense for this. And: "You inherited a fortune from your mother's side, your sister didn't get it at all - she survived" Flip the genders of the parent and sibling and damn if I don't understand completely what it's like to inherit that particular "fortune."

Their music always immediately hits this hidden cord within that just sends shivers flowing to every end. Great work.

More than musicians ! friends of my mind

good to see Tom again. I was at the premiere of his movie at the Shrine about 10 years ago. One of my cherished memories. looking forward to the new album.

The last three years of my life have been exactly this. Manifestation became reality when I tried to end my life in March of 2021. My mind led me into utter darkness, and only through the love of friends, family, and beautiful music like this have I trudged the road back to hope. Not even doctors helped me through it, misdiagnosed as I was (combine misdiagnosed Bipolar-I with undiagnosed ADHD, and you get Hell, capitalized. Yes, it is a living terror when doctors make assumptions and refuse to ask the right questions). I can't tell you how maddening it is to be unable to describe the thoughts in my brain, and how wonderful it is to run into lyrics like this and point: "It looks and feels and sounds like THIS." This song and Tropic Morning News are like glasses of glacier water in the desert. Thank you guys, sincerely. The constant rhythm of your music has changed my life for the better, and allowed me to be here a few days more. Okay, maybe many more. I anticipate walking many more miles with the First Two Pages of Frankenstein crammed in my ears. :)

Funny, just a few days ago I found “Walking On A String” and fell in love with it. Matt and Phoebes voices go so well together. I can already tell this album is gonna be my new favorite

I've not seen anything from him since his movie Mistaken from Strangers (2013) I had the good luck to have seen you guys live since 2009 when you played Tivoli in Copenhagen. It's uncanny the way the lyrics of your music tell my own story of success and failure. With that said I hope you produce another uplifting album with Brent Knopf soon! I love the EL VY sound. I particularly enjoyed your performance at the old KEXP studio in Seattle where my GF at the time gave you a full tour of the studio with her golden retriever "Georgie Girl" and your performance at Numos on Cap hill. 2015 was a great chapter in my life. I listen to the album often, because i like to feel the sarcasm of a "pathetic self-aggrandizing rocker alone in a hotel room" and I desperately want the fantasy to rock like it is 2015 all over again. Please make some time for another childish collaboration with Brent. I need the levity my friend- because in my heart "I'm the man to be".

Wow, do I see this video different from everyone else! I feel this video is about an individual (played by Tom) who likes to see himself in his "mind" as thinner and happier than he really is (Matt.) He follows the "imagination" of his mind (which is not his friend) to escape reality. He lives alternating between fantasy and sadness. In Buddhism this is what results when you don't live in the here and now and instead let your mind lead you. This also explains why the Tom character imagines himself playing with the happy version of himself and then seconds later is alone, because Matt's character is not really there. It was all in his mind. In the tree, in the playground, etc. The fantasy inevitability falls apart. Note that at 1:25 the lyric is "it (the mind) takes you by the hand" right when that actually happens in the video. Also backing the idea that Matt Beringer is the "imagined" version of Tom in his mind is why they have the same beard and clothes in each scene. Also why despite Tom's fantasies falling apart, the mind (Matt) keeps trying to get his attention by waving and gesturing to follow him. But the mind... is not your friend.
