You can follow up on a question in many ways. You might look up the answer online or in a book. You might make your own observations to answer the question. You can also use inference to explore questions where the answer can not be directly observed. When we infer, we make predictions, "if this explanation were true, what would I expect to see" and then observe if those predictions pan out as you explore. The process of inference is widely misunderstood and misused, but if you understand this tool, it is a powerful tool in the nature Journaler's tool kit enabling us to get closer to correct explanations step-by-step.
About The Nature Journal Connection Video Series
In partnership with the Children’s Creativity Museum in San Francisco (creativity.org/), I worked with a team to produce a series of 40 free,10 to15-minute recorded nature journaling workshops featuring fun and engaging activities that build the skills of a scientist, naturalist, artist, and observer. We released the first episode on October 27, 2020, and we will release one each week through July 2021. Appropriate for children of all ages as well as adults, this program connects science, language arts, math, visual arts, critical thinking, mindfulness, wonder, curiosity, and joy.
