The nautilus will make you rethink intelligence || EXPERIMENTALS: Nautiluses (part 1)

Nautiluses have survived five mass extinctions thanks in large part to a big and complex brain that smells and feels better than it can see. That's why Dr. Jennifer Basil, an evolutionary biologist at Brooklyn College, has rethought how humans perceive intelligence. Because with the nautilus, looks can be deceiving.

What do you see when you picture a nautilus? On the surface, it's a beautifully strange shelled cephalopod (just like the one in this PopSci video)... But look closer... What if you also saw a pattern inside the nautilus' shell that repeats throughout nature? What if you saw the lost first underwater film (a story too strange and horrifying to be fiction)? Well, those nautilus mysteries await in PopSci's "Experimentals : Nautiluses" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CkJ1MKMO0MI.html

I really wonder about generational memory, and how certain behaviors or wisdoms seem to be present instinctively or inherently. This seems to be an animal with a lot of that kind of memory. It's like a step beyond institutional memory

On behalf on the Nautilus seen on this video, I'm surprised to see that for such an important study there can't be a little more budget to create a sizable and pleasant environment for the animal. That aquarium is so small and takes away from the impact of the discovery being made.
@austinshoupe3003

A) don't overestimate the budgets of these kinds of programs. B) usually small tanks like this are for filming, observation, or healthcare rather than for housing.
@alexross5714
@alexross5714 3 года назад
@@austinshoupe3003 I hope you're right about that tank not being its home because after all that talk about the rich internal world and the complex sensory perceptions of the nautilus, that little enclosure looks like a terrible place to live. Even zoos provide challenging "enrichment" activities to keep their animals from going insane in their artificial enclosures.
@davewolf6256
@davewolf6256 2 года назад
@@alexross5714 The way to tell it's not for living is that there is no sign of mechanisms for filtration, temperature regulation, lighting or oxygen that are ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL for keeping any aquatic animals. If these Nautilus were being housed in this tank, they wouldn't survive long enough for the scientist to run any test at all.

Our housing tanks are 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Nautiluses like to swim up and down. We keep them in dimly lit tanks with dark sides,, as they are a deep sea critter. So no we don't keep them in tiny aquaria!

To my knowledge, nautili are also the only cephalopods who are K-selected rather than r-selected. This means they reproduce less but live longer, creating a slow-but-steady survival rate. If nautili lived in groups, I bet they'd live longer.

We don't know their population numbers.. only that they take a long time to reproduce, in very particular conditions, and it is near impossible in captivity. Please protect them!

They need a better tank with stimuli like a natural surrounding. How can you study something to learn about it and you put it in a crappyass environment. They think, they feel, and I am sure you are doing nothing but harming them psychologically even if it is different in a way a human is harmed. Scientists really need to get some damn ethics.
@JimmyShot

Barbara Channel ooooooooooooor they had it in a tank so it was the visual focus of the shots instead of being buried in the clutter of a congested shot. Those tanks didn't have filtration or aeration so it's pretty obvious it was for the shot. Oh wait I mean, "yeah screw those scientists, damn morons".

The nautiluses are well cared for, stimulated, and treated with unbelievable respect. (In fact, these nautiluses eat like kings.) The researchers kindly pulled them out of their happy (and dark-much like their natural ocean habitat) lab home so we could photograph them in a clear tank. Nautiluses are nocturnal animals, as well. So, members of Dr. Basil's lab have made their schedules nocturnal, too-in order to conduct their studies and to make sure the nautiluses are looked after. Thanks for watching!

I thank and praise my god Jehovah my best friend and creator for making this wonderful amazing creature with the rest of the amazing animal kingdom . Thank you so much and may all of us continue to research and study these creatures to find out all there is to find out about them and how they live and how they act , how they also fit in the world of the oceans . How amazing its ability , I want to see more . I want to know how they act together and compared to one another so we can see their individuality even among their own kind , right ? how do they hunt are all of them the same do they all h8unt and eat and sleep the same exact ways or can they be exotically different from one to another and why based on what differences , is it like us with their environment as well as living conditions as well as maybe even personality ? who says they cant have a personality each of them , one that likes chunk meals one that likes skinny nd boney meals etc etc etc ? huh ? I really think I need to know these things !!! But most important to me is how they might possibly fit in to GOD Jehovah's Kingdom , of course you understand what im saying , what NO ? You don't pray "let your kingdom come let your will be done " well that kingdom you are praying for is the one Im talking about , would you like to know about this kingdom and how amazing it is like this Sea creature is ? One that made this type and all the rest of life and everything , that's right GODS Kingdom , our god _ Jehovah !!
