The military's what you make of it. If you wanna do your 4 and bounce to go to college, that's okay. If you wanna do 20 and collect retirement in your late 30s-early 40s, that's okay too. You just gotta have goals. I did a lot of mindless cleaning even as an E-5, a lot of it I volunteered for in order to give other guys in my division who were gonna re-up a fighting chance at a good eval and new rank. Some people might think I'm a shitbag for it, but I didn't want to get out of the Navy taking away a good eval while others who were staying in would miss out on. It is what it is, and I've been out for nearly 2 years now so I don't care anymore. But I am glad to see people who were 3rd classes coming into my division make 1st class these past couple of cycles!

Yeah, the military sets you up to be successful, If you don't come out with at least an associates after 4 years when it's being paid for, then your doing it wrong. I hate the army but I'm not going to complain because that's just how it goes.

Yo JT. You often speak truth beyond your years. A direct result of your military experience. I see so many "kids" graduating college and starting a career that want the top level "cool" engineering work. They whimper and cry because they get the "menial" engineering assignments. No appreciation for having to pay their dues. Wish I had 6-8 JT's in my group. Go slay it bro!

I am an aquatic chemist and a Navy reservist and a few new guys at my firm are salty that they are making only $50K as an engineer. Like you said there are levels and they haven't gotten quals to justify a 6 figure payday. I went to college to get a masters which started me out at $80K but I now make $107K but waited 4 year. Nothing is given.

Good video, I think with any branch of service people’s experiences and expectations will vary and it’s up to the individual to either make it harder or easier on themselves as opposed to looking at other people and what they did and expecting the same outcome as them. The less he does that the less disappointed he will become.

Great points for those just entering the Navy. Be proactive and keep checking off those boxes. Grunt work? I had heard a lot about doing just those kinds of regular Navy janitorial jobs in boot camp, especially as undesignated. Chipping/painting while hanging off the side of a ship on a wooden plank and two ropes. NO WAY! In boot camp I learned that I could volunteer for submarine duty. That was my ticket out of the regular Navy so to speak. Since I was stuck for 4 years, I just wanted to do something cool. Got orders to sub school, then lucked into 8 more weeks in San Diego for SK (Storekeeper) school. I volunteered for that too incidentally. Then off to an SSBN sub in Scotland. Being the green nub, I immediately started mess cooking duties and was handed a qualification card and told to study the various systems on the "Boat". You can sleep somewhere in between time. I only had to mess cook that first patrol since one of the storekeepers was leaving the Navy and I would be replacing him. My next patrol I qualified on the diving planes and earned my Dolphins. Later in my time on the boat, I got bored of the diving planes and went to school for Sonar and stood Sonar watches. Sonar is an acronym - anyone know what it stands for? Enjoy your adventure at this time in your life while you're young!

When I reported on my ship, it was me and 3 new Booters, and we was assigned to 1st Div/Deck Div. Chief's (later Senior Chief) first words was "Before you are Boatswain's Mates. We know the shit. You will be treated like crap. You will earn the respect, in where you work and how you work. Now turn two." Then we was paired off, with a Boats. The one I paired up with, was a great mentor and shipmate. Taught me the ins and outs as a Boatswain's Mate. I studied everything I could, and when I could. I studied the ship, small boats, security, fire fighting. Next thing I know, he handed me the books to study to become a Boatswain's Mate, while I was an E-1. He even went as far, in getting a pair of patches for inspiration - BM E-3. When I became an E-2, he handed me a blank test, and it took me a week to do it. The ship came first. But I passed it, and I think he was more excited. LOL. Hell, both Senior Chief and the BM, went as far, as speaking to both the Captain and Admiral, to request I was able to wear the patch early, as an E-2. But I wasn't able to patch up, cause of a shit bag of a blue falcon, blew up on me, when Senior Chief called me "Boats". Started his "drama card" BS, and I was kicked out. But since my record was clean, I was given an Honorable Discharge on my DD-214. Those anchors hurt like hell, after 8 BMs and 2 Officiers

I joined the navy to follow my grandfather's footsteps. He was a man that led a great family when he was alive. After his service he worked hard nights stripping and waxing floors to put food on the family table, and always returned with a smile and a few lessons to teach. My idea of the navy is a family, a commitment to this country that less than 1% has the privilege of serving even if it means stripping and waxing floors. It is a sacrifice, it is a service, and above all it is a privilege. Remember that fellow sailors.

Graduated high school June ‘89 was in boot camp by July. While my friends were getting arrested and fooling with drugs I: finished boot camp, MM A-school, Nuclear power school, Emergency welder school, went to subs, vacationed in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Guam and Hawaii. became ships diver, and left the Navy with 10K cash, a car (paid) and the GI bill that helped pay for a degree in chemistry all in five years. I always thought I gave more to the Navy but in reality I gained so much more, some long grueling weeks for sure but those are long forgotten.

Everybody has to mess crank or junior sailors get volunteered to do certain tasks like painting or diving through wet garbage to recycle glass cans and plastics, that was lots of fun. We also got to paint one side of the soap box superstructure on an FFG from the weather deck to the o2 level. Chip and paint magazines or DCPO. Coop cleaner is a given. Roving security watch.

Wish I had chosen an A school instead of being an undesignated seaman. I spent a total of 23 months in Deck Dept between 2 ships; USS Semmes DDG 18 and USS Cape Cod AD 43. Finally struck for OS on Cape Cod. I reenlisted after my 4yrs for OS A school. Enjoyed A school as an OS3. Made OS2 on USS Kinkaid DD 965. Went back to OS A school as an instructor in 1989. Made OS1 in 1990. Spent next 13 yrs taking the E7 exam. Another lesson I wished I had learned was to not party and waste my money in the early years of my Navy career. Learned to save for the future and not be in big debt in my mid-40s to present day. Should have stayed single too. Now I am 55 years old and have to work full time to pay a mortgage and alimony.

I was in 93 to 97. my advice to everyone is: 1) watch his videos; 2) do anything you can to get rank before bootcamp like JRotc ask your recruiter; 3) take your job seriously, study, and get qualified for everything you can (I stopped studying after I made 3rd because I thought I was shit hot. Wrong mindset). I was an undesignated fireman when I joined, and I was a 3rd class Signalman (now QM) when I got out.

The Navy is like o other job in the world, you either love it or hate it. After basic training and joining your first ship, you start at the bottom, and have to first gain respect of your shipmates, then divisional chiefs and officers. before they will permit a green horn to do anything technical. It gets better once you work your way up the promotional ladder. well it was for me i served for 14 years in the Royal Navy, but did come into contact with the US and Canadian Navies in my time. and served as a marine engineer mostly on minesweepers and hunters undertaking mine clearance operations from iceland to the eastern mediterannean. i trained in mayn things in the navy from engineering to diving, and still look back on it with pride and honoured to have served. its what you make of it really. hope it helps, former RN marine engineer petty officer 1979 to 1993.

@williamsanders7389
@williamsanders7389 6 лет назад
Going through ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) means you would commission as an officer (O-1 to O-10). ROTC requires an application to fill out and has a PFT alongside it. It is highly competitive. Going through something such as DEP (Delayed Entry Program) would mean you are enlisting (E-1 to E-9.) During ROTC you are required to take certain ROTC/Navy courses to prepare you for your role as an officer whether it be surface warfare, special warfare etc. Not sure if you knew this or not just thought I'd give the basic info of ROTC :)

I think he said they can play football in replacement of some physical training time? I'm leaving to bootcamp in december and was wondering if afterwards when im stationed somewhere if this is true and what kind of training options they have. I remember you made a video where you talked about how you got to swim a lot and I know the ships usually have gyms on them. How extensive are the activities offered there? I know it's a bit of a long shot, but I've always been interested in taking up boxing. Would I be able to do that during my time in the service?

Bottom line, YOU get what YOU make out of your enlistment. MCRD ain't as easy as you'd think. If you're not a team-player you're headed into the greatest cluster-fuck imaginable. If you can't take direction even at the most menial tasks, you're fucked. The company will pay for YOUR fuck ups. Can't make your rack or tie a fucking knot, how the fuck do you expect to be responsible for the man in front, beside, above, below or behind you? As a Marine you WILL be responsible for others. They fuck up, YOU pay. You fuck up THEY pay. Take a good look at the film, "Full Metal Jacket", the boot camp scenes. You'll get an idea of how the littlest shit can fuck up a whole lotta people. Attention to detail is everything. So if you can't properly clean a shitter, lace a boot, fold a towel, roll a pair of socks, make your rack, the way THEY (not you) want it, give it up and join the Air-Farce! There is NO room for error in the Corps. It's backwoods Grunt life, tough and dirty. All Marines are Riflemen FIRST. There's your way, the right way, the wrong way and there's the Marine way. The Marine way rules. All decisions will be made for you, Mommy and Daddy are out, your girlfriend WILL find some other dude too. So take it in the ass like an inmate. All are out the fucking door once you arrive at MCRD. You start a new life. Better not fuck it up! You'll meet some of the smartest and dumbest folks ever to walk the Earth. Are you willing to accept the latter ordering you around? You had better or join the Girl Scouts! You will belong to the Corps until the day you get discharged. The Corps' boot camp will even decide what color your fucking turds are and when you get to speak. They will even decide what words you get to use. The Marine way is king! They wake up at Ass-crack dark-thirty so that they can have their private time among themselves, release stress, etc. THEIR time. Bottom line, there are NO shortcuts in the Marine Corps. NONE!!

Everyone hates the e-3 and below initial tad most people get. Mine was security asf for 3 months which wasn't too bad but I would have rather been in my shop

Yeah try going TAD to the mess decks cranking bud
@twoeightythreez
@twoeightythreez 5 лет назад
I did a lot of TAD. It depends on the needs of the Navy..in fact I spent more time TAD then in my actual department. it all depends on timing, i guess. My first week aboard Nimitz, I went TAD to the Lincoln to get flight deck quals. When I came back I went cranking, made E4, deployed WESTPAC 2003 and was sent TAD to Security. That was weird, because I was security in port, but back in my division when we were underway. We deployed again in 2005 and when we came back I went to deck till I made E5. Then I came back to my division for the remainder of my tour....as divisional DCPO. When I got short, I went to beach det....because the ship went on an extended workup underway and they didn't want to fly me off. All in all, your Navy experience may vary. As long as you remember that the needs of the Navy come first, It wasn't bad...but definitely not what I expected.

I literally read all these comments cause I am about to join soon. After reading all these comments I’ve narrowed it down to the best 6 jobs that I liked to my preference. With that being said all these comments are from 4 years ago or more, makes me wonder how all these people are doing in the Navy.

Don't pick supply rates cause they usually don't carry over into the civilian world very well unless your planning on becoming a merchant marine or a manager at a store or warehouse, given that you atleast got out an E-5, pick an aviation rate such as AM or which ever rate that has to do with the maintenance of an aircraft.
@kevdawg3206

Edmoka Edmoka since my score wasn’t high enough for Am
@edmokaedmoka8945
@edmokaedmoka8945 6 лет назад
Not too sure about AO since that’s dealing with ordinance but having a rate that has to do with the upkeep and maintenance from working on avionics to replacing an aileron all that experience is gonna be really valuable if you decide to get out, for example if you wanna get a job working the flight line for the new f-35 at Northrop Grumman or Lockheed Martin having that experience will put you above other candidates applying for that same job especially since you’ll be a veteran with experience on military aircraft and also they won’t require you to have an A&P license since it’s not a civilian aircraft.
