The NBA HATES Superteams... So They Changed The Rules 

This hurts all the teams that developed their own stars like the Nuggets, Grizzlies, and Thunder. Maybe they should have added a clause where if you drafted and developed your guys 5-15% of their salary shouldn't count towards the cap if their contact exceeds a certain threshold.

I can't help but feel like this is only going to destroy the middle class of the NBA. Instead of signing strong role players to 10-20 million dollar contracts, you're basically locked into superstars and minimums with the way the max contracts keep rising. And I really don't think those superstars will be raising their hands to take less money to benefit the team as a whole, it just doesn't work like that. Massive L for the players as a whole.

honestly i have mixed feelings about this because while i get the idea of the new cba, this will likely change how much teams are willing to pay players and it prevents the construction of good non super teams in the process like the bucks or nuggets

The NBA needs to address the glaring issue with smaller market teams. The only real way to build contenders for smaller markets is tanking in the draft, getting a Jokic in the 2nd round is a 1 in a million chance. Silver is against tanking, so how do the smaller market teams compete with teams that have the market or geographic location advantage? It seems to be either get super lucky or make it easier to retain homegrown talent or young talent you traded for and have bird rights on while going into the tax and not being penalized for it.

Superteams isn’t the problem, the problem is that most teams don’t know how to put teams together anymore or develop players anymore. What most fans/league owners want is a face of there franchise.

This will allow us to see who the actually greats are when the deck isn’t stacked. I personally think Gianns and Jokic will dominate the decade back and forth.

Love the point that stability and parity are both competing issues. The Warriors overwhelmingly won the stability game by drafting, developing, keeping and building around their core players. It's incredibly unfair for them to just let any of these players go all in the name of forced parity, but it's also unfair for the players who deserve their bag to be shortchanged for the same reason. It goes against the core idea of building one's success rather than simply acquiring it, and sustaining it through player loyalty, culture and good management. It almost feels like teams should be incentivized to limit the growth and potential of some players just to keep them on the team and on friendlier contracts. Why bother making your promising rookie a borderline all-star within 3 years if it's gonna screw up your potential salary cap by having them demand a max extension? I wonder where Austin Reaves is gonna get his bag..... I was thinking Boston, Denver and the Grizzlies had the best chances for a similar type of success as the Warriors, but the new CBA would definitely impact that. And it sucks because these teams are some of the most exciting to watch in the league with both their team basketball and individual talent, and they are *consistent* with their performances.

The unfortunate reality tho is that parity has historically been bad for ratings across all sports. EVen in the nfl which is usualy championed for having parity the highest ratings typically came during dynasty years. Superteams create more intruige and polarization. Ppl either jump on the bandwagon and watch to see how good the team does or watches to see them fall flat on their face. In the end I dont think parity will stay bc players will bend the rules and find ways around it no matter how difficult it is whether that be taking discounts etc. But we'll see how it goes.

This is bs tbh. Cause Nuggets are gonna get hurt by this as well. And Heat and Kings and GSW. Any team that drafts great will be hurt. Yea you minimize super teams but you also make it super hard for players who are drafted and then turn out to be stars. You make it hard for that same team to be able to keep them.

I find it deeply funny that the NBA first went positionless in the All NBA teams the very season it became crystal clear that the "positionless" small ball concept was abandoned by most and then implemented a super team-busting CBA to achieve parity the VERY YEAR that we finall got parity.

They should try a Designated Player system. Each team gets one roster slot for a player that is exempt from max salary restrictions and only counts as a flat number against the cap (regardless of how much they are actually paid). In other words, teams like the Charlotte Hornets could offer a player like Kevin Durant 9 figures to lure him away from his super team in Phoenix. The stars would need to take MONSTER pay cuts to play with other stars.

Adam silver just made it worse for teams like the hornets, thunder, cleavland, Indiana, etcetera. The only thing that's gonna happen is if players are smart they would take massive pay cuts. But then he'll be investigating every team in the nba for tampering which would make him look bad

They need to do this but also market small market teams and stars like Jokic Giannis sga etc much better so that not only hardcore but casual fans know these stars and those cities also become free agency destinations as well as the big markets but kudos to the nba for bringing back parity and competition in the nba

What defines a super team? I think this depends on who you ask. They say GS is a super team? How, when Steph is the only superstar. Just because they won a lot? Maybe they were a super team when KD joined other than that, in my opinion, they aren’t a super team. The nba just sick of GS winning.

I think there should be a hard cap, but I feel like players drafted by a team should count less against the cap. I love the way the warriors built their team. Almost all their players were drafted and developed. The only superstar that came to them through free agency was KD. But until the super max deals get under control, teams will have to choose between keeping a superstar or developing young talent. Mid level players will be going to China. They will get squeezed out just like the NFL.

It should also be said that the game of basketball itself is proving that superteams no longer guarantee winning titles anymore. The recent title winners (Warriors, Bucks, Nuggets, Raptors) show that the best teams have one or two stars complemented by elite bench defense, rebounding, and three point shooting.

Except for KD’s Warriors, I have zero problems whatsoever with the teams that won the titles this last decade or so. And the KD situation was a very dumb decision to not smooth the cap rise that year. What the NBA is doing is again trying to protect bad owners from themselves while 1. screwing the entire middle class of players (in this new environment they will all be underpaid, while the stars or fake stars will get theirs) 2. penalising massively teams that are doing it right by developing their own players (they won’t be able to reward these guys with deserving salary increases) To me these side effects alone are outrageous: This means OKC won’t be able to keep their home grown talent (again!), Denver couldn’t have been possible, same thing with the Warriors, Memphis would need to trade one of their big 3… The problem with the NBA these last seasons has NOT been failed experiments by superstars arrogantly thinking and being enabled by a bad and weak culture they can act as players-GMs-coaches. The problems have been mostly due to star players treating the regular season like it doesn’t matter. But that is more a problem for the viewership of these games, because on the competition side of things, NONE of the teams where that behaviour has been on display have won anything. Consistency, stability and competency of management, chemistry, team play, 1 super talented player leading by example, have been rewarded with the ultimate prize. e.g. I love Kawhi, but I’m glad he hasn’t won anything with the Clippers. Just like in society, more government and more rules made by a class of people who have different motivations than the participants always lead to bad consequences. We will see… but these news cap rules look to me like they won’t fix the most egregious issue, which is star players not playing, and actually create new horrible consequences for teams doing it the “right way”.

Seems to me like the league should focus the luxury taxes and penalties on teams that acquire players through free agency and trades, and charge far less penalties for high salaries of players that are still with teams that drafted them. Also some reduction in penalties the more years that player has played for that team.

If they really just want to reduce player movement & increase the ability of small market teams to compete, the better idea would have been to make a Substantially higher luxury tax on overages due to trades and free agent signings and have low or no luxury tax when going over due to resigning your existing roster.

Like with all CBA moves designed to protect the owners from themselves this almost certainly will have unintended consequences. Like the shortening of contracts from 7 years resulting in homegrown stars just leaving teams earlier which led to changes to a later CBA where leveling up of max contracts just lead to stars signing those max contracts and being a bargain (rare), not living up to the contract and crushing the teams cap or just asking for a trade anyways. We shall see if this has the intended result and doesn't have unintended consequences.

The new cba contradicts itself you wanna stop super teams and players leaving teams they were drafted by but wanna penalize teams who built a great team off guys they drafted.. what sense does that make, tell teams to stop paying all these ridiculous contracts

The Second Apron actually won't hurt a team like the Thunder nearly as much as some might fear. The Thunder and other teams that build primarily through the draft will not be nearly as penalized as those that try to acquire talent through Free Agency, because the Second Apron only affects a team's ability to sign outside talent, not players that the team already has. This new policy also gets rid of the restriction that only two players per team could be signed to a Super-max extension. This would mean that in the scenario that all of the Thunder's core wound up being incredible All-NBA worthy players, OKC would in theory be able to sign all four to Super-max deals if ownership could deal with the massive cost of doing so. If a team is good enough at player development and drafting exceptional talent, then that team can sign all of them to as crazy a deal as they want. The League is also rewarding teams for developing 2nd Round talent by adding another 2-way slot.

As a Grizzlies fan I hate this rule, almost all of our core players were drafted and developed by the team with really only Steven Adams and Marcus Smart being exceptions and neither of them are superstars. This hurts us because now we have to probably give away a Steven Adams, Marcus Smart, Brandon Clarke, Desmond Bane etc to keep Ja and Triple J

This is gonna ruin the nba for the players. 1. The players don't this. 2. The every non super-star player is basically going to be on a very low contract so for players on 8-25 mil range will most likely be on near minimum contracts which will ruin every thing for the middle tier players. It also makes 90% of championship teams will be drafted and they will be young players on low contracts therefore making repeating more than double as difficult as before which it was alr really difficult. Also they think tanking is problem now ots gonna be a lot worse when the only think you can do is draft a championship caliber team.

Introduce a hard cap like the NFL, go back to the standard 16-team playoff format (8 seeds, no play-in tournament crap), and make it so every team that misses the playoffs gets the exact same number of ping-pong balls for the draft lottery, to incentivize winning and discourage tanking. Also, I like the idea of players re-signing with the team that drafted them able to sign for 10-15% more money over market value (i.e., whatever is the highest bid from a different team) to stay with the team that drafted them, and that excess amount NOT count against the team that drafted them's salary cap if they do re-sign him.

people use the term superteam really loosely now. ive seen people call the 2016 cavs a super team. in the entire "super team" era only golden state won a ring under the model. and that team was already assembled prior. thus CBA is gonna be harmful long term to the league. teams wont be able to retain players theyd normally keep to build up their team and long term prospects.

It's so insane that no one decided to make better supermax rules. Like, I dunno: -Supermax contracts don't have the full amounts counted towards the salary cap, only the normal max amount -If the supermax player is traded, the team has to pay a fee (not a kicker that the player gets) to the team and the full amount is put on their cap -A player eligible for a supermax (extension included) cannot be signed and traded for the supermax amount, and will have a "supermax light" tag if they join another team with a supermax (or supermax-eligible) player in free agency. -You cannot have any more than two of any combination of supermax or "supermax light" players on a team. Are these rules perfect? No. Does these rules, more than the current rules, make an full-hearted attempt at promoting parity? Unfortunately, yes. Why is it that off the dome people can come up with better rules to achieve the league's goals than the people paid to do it? No f*cking clue.

The 5 year max length of a contract is hugely detrimental to the league. Teams have zero leverage if after two years their star is unhappy since they have to make a team basically next year or lose most of the stars trade value. A good example of longer contracts stopping player movement is Kobe when he requested a trade in 07 and didn't get it. They had him locked in for 3 more years so they didn't have to trade him or risk losing him for nothing. The next year they got Pau and they won two titles. The added pressure also leads teams to doing dumb shit like what the Suns are doing, or what the Mavs did when they traded for Kyrie, in a desperate attempt to keep Luka happy only for the team to get worse in the process.

I like this idea. People saying this is gonna hurt the Nuggets are only thinking short term. In the long term, it is gonna be beneficial to them. Once teams have their top 2 duo, they no longer need to tank. So now they can focus on drafting quality role players instead of tanking for stars. And if they do happen to stumble upon stars, they can trade him for a set of quality role players. The other team now has a face of the franchise and the competing team has a good team to win. Now your focus is on roster construction instead of drafting and this will increase the pay of mid tier players as well. There will be a clear demarcation on who the top player is as well for example for Celtics, Tatum will be the designated star and Brown will know himself that he is not as good and won't be expecting a super max. Also garbage max contracts like Lamelo Ball's max will be less frequent.

so what's the point for teams who devoloped players they drafted if 2 or 3 of them became all star lvl player the team who drafted them would have to let at least one of them go when thoses said player start their prime ..... and a team who decided to tank for multiple season with lot of space cap could easily get those player with good young prospect .... for example spurs who have a lot of cap space could just get two max contract + wemby and become a superteam while the team who has developed their player end up empty handed

I think that a hard cap would actually go a long way toward reducing the formation of super teams. There's a hard cap number that may be exceeded only with either drafter or draft day traded players (such as a LaMelo Ball extension) and minimum contracts. If you are trading for a super star or star level talent, you must trade money for money within 3 to 5% of the value of contracts. Max and Super Max level contracts are not a for an bum who makes an All Star team, but rather are tiers based on the stats the player puts up. A Super Max player (130% of the veteran max) must have a top 5 position in at least counting stat during their previous contract. A Max player (115% of the veteran max) must have a top 15 position in at least one counting stat during their last contract. Otherwise, you're eligible for the veteran max, which would be the average value of the top 5 players not on a max or super max extension plus 8% every year. Only the next 3 drafts worth of picks are available for trading, but we're doing away with thte Stepien rule. However, you are still on the hook for any picks that you have already traded through the 2029 draft. Players may get a Max contract offered in free agency, if they qualify, but they are not eligible for a Super Max that way. A player on a Super Max contract may not be traded for at least 2 years after their Super Max contract is in place. You can either move or get paid, not both.

Supermax should’ve had a clause that stated “only team owner can initiate trades. If u demand a trade u (said player) will owe the team 60% of the full amount of contract immediately”. Im all for players taking control of their careers, but this damn trade after trade is just getting silly.

Players who request a trade within 1 or 2 seasons after signing a new contract should cost the recieiving team an additional 25% against the cap. And players who were drafted by their team should have their salaries count 25% less. Thatll limit player movement and incentivize players to stay with the team who drafted them. Because not only will can they pay them more, itll count less against the cap

One rule change that can fix the super team problem is that teams who have 2+ players who made at least one all-star team in the last 3 years can not sign or trade for another player who has. It not only helps limit super team building but it also means that teams don’t have to let go of star players they drafted as it only applies to adding a star on the team.

they just need to redefine what bird rights are. If you drafted a star and go to re-sign them you should get a discount towards your salary cap in order to retain that player. Something like 20-30% discount so that free agency is still a viable coarse for some teams/markets. Players should still earn full dollar amount for whatever value they are offered in free agency but teams and cities that draft well like the OKC example shouldn't be punished for their success. I hope I am explaining this correctly because I know it may seem like I am saying exactly what birds rights are already but ultimately the goal of the redefinition of birds rights should be to let teams like OKC retain players that they drafted like Durant, Westbrook, Harden and still be able to pay them their full market value that they could obtain via free agency but not be penalized so harshly for doing so by the salary cap restrictions.

I feel like when team drafts a player they cant trade him and he cant leave if he does punosh the team the player and the other team. You cam only those you got through trades. Draft players especially top ten cant leave the team. Fans will be happy to see there best drafted players can never leave which will build a huge bond with the team the city and fans. Teams shouldn’t be hurt if they’ve raised their own talent. If a team became a super team with 3 all stars all drafted from their team they shouldn’t be penalized at all so it lets teams actually focus more on building and developing talent. Teams like the Thunder shouldn’t be hurt for having so much talent even though everyone wants to get paid

Could you not amend the cba so that if you give a supermax contract to someone you've drafted it creates a smaller hit to your finances?

I'm sure this will be great for parity. Unfortunately, dynasties are actually good for business believe it or not.

I would make it so that only 90% of a players salary counts against the cap if the team drafted that player. Then a 1% decrease each year that any player is on a team. So potentially if a guy plays 20 years for the team that drafted him then only 70% of his salary counts against the cap. Players still get paid and teams can still spend if they do it intelligently.

In my opinion I don’t think the league hate super teams. They just making changes because they are constantly getting criticized for it. The smaller market teams owners and their fan bases are the ones who hate it. They hate that the players are the one’s basically creating the super teams. They didn’t have a problem with Boston creating the Big 3 but had problems with Miami creating their Big 3.

Any team with 3 or more stars is a super team wether home grown or not super teams are not good and there should be regulation in place in order to hinder super teams from being created

I wish they’d quit making all these weird rules. Give it a hard cap, no max on player deals. Teams will be able to settle on the actual value of players instead of 90% of the league being max or MLE guys. And if someone wants to pay lebron or curry 60% of the cap great. Maybe another team decides to go more balanced. It at least gives a chance to build teams differently.

I feel that this deal is to prevent load management. The less enormous/ bad contracts there are the less leverage players have and they are more likely to get less money unless they go to shit teams

I really wish they changed it so if you have homegrown talent you wont be affected. So while the warriors would still be dominant with their core 3, itll be tough to acquire KD. This will further hurt small market teams or teame trying to organically build their team.

Perhaps the supermax rule needs an addition that if u earn and get your supermax deal that if u turn around and ask to be traded that you lose that max bonus when traded and need to earn it again with the new team to get the bonus back.

The best solution i can think of is if you draft a player and resign him it won't hurt the cap as much for example if tatum and brown are making 30 million each then it would affect the cap by only 50 million instead of 60 which means you may pay less luxury tax when you have starts that you drafted

They need to make it to where you can pay players you drafted that never moved teams whatever they want that you'll give them but at the expense of being able to sign free agents, not a hardcap to where you can't keep your loyal players, free agency should be about the 4th and 5th options and the bench, not Harden and Kyrie

overall appreciate the channel and thought this video was good, but dubbing the Warriors the architect of the super team movement is a gross mischaracterization. Yes, they got KD. But the rest of the team was developed in house. Even Wiggins was just lying there on the curb with a "For Free" sign. Their salary cap is a result of rewarding their players for winning. % of max contract is too high, it makes the other 85% of the players salary being compressed. hard cap is definitely needed, maybe 10m over the super tax apron. you do not want less player movement, it keep fan base engage, offseason and trade deadline is the highlight of nba season. supermax contract should be inelligible to trade for at least 2 yrs.

Supertimes are actually a nonissue in NBA. GSW was built through the draft, Cavs and Raptors were built through the draft apart from Lebron and Lenard, Lakers only won one ring in a bubble.

Super max deals are good for teams. It just takes a smart gm/owner to understand just bc some1 qualifies for one doesnt mean they are good enough for it

Let's reward player-team loyalty. Reduce the "salary-cap" hit by three percent every year the player is with the same club. Let's say Curry and Klay stay with the Warriors for 20 years. They are older, less productive and more injury prone, but everyone still wants then to play for the same team --- and the players still want to get paid. Pay them their $50 Million salaries: But the cap hit is reduced 60%. (This is probably as long as it will go.) A more frequent situation is when a player is re-signed after 5 years. Going back to the Golden State Example, this would allow Golden State to "pay" more money to someone like Kevon Looney. And while rookies get no discount, there contracts are already so low it doesn't really matter. Keep in mind, when a player is rewarded with a long contract, the cap hit declines a little bit every year. So instead of the contract getting worse after a couple of years, the contracts will age like fine wine!!!! Example. A six year player signs a four year deal. Thus, in year 7, the hit on the salary cap is reduced 21%. By year 10, the hit on the salary cap is reduced 30% Teams can still trade, but they will always want to have a "core" group of players who stay with the team. And players who stay with the same team can probably expect fair compensation becuase the cap hit discount is a valuable asset for the club. Also, if a player is traded in his second year, the discount begins th second year he plays for his new time. If he stays for 10 years, he is part of htat teams continuity. You could crunch some numbers and determine that the discount should be cacluated differently --- like 2 % per year. But that kind of analysis is beyond my pay grade.

Golden state warriors- Architects of modern super teams ? Do you watch basketball bud lol, every single one of their players was done through the draft except Durant, or through a trade. They are not recruiting players like the Heat, Lakers have. Warriors are one of the few teams that have done it the right way, along with the nuggets. The warriors will actually be better, if they get rid of Thompson, or Green, they have aged, the shots don't fall, and they have both lost a step defensively. Green has become a team chemistry cancer with his podcasts and punching team mates in the face, he checked out of the game a few years ago.

This CBA is going to be a disaster. When rule changes going after dynasties like the Warriors ends up affecting play-in teams like the Timberwolves too, it goes to far.

Natural super teams should be encouraged. Which would include Drafted, or traded for players during rookie contract. The taxes on those guys should be significantly less than the tax on an incoming player. Also, make the salary cap based on net salary. This way $5M in Texas, is the same as $5M in California.

Great vid. I don't think the league is trying to stop player movement. I think it wants to create player movement. The league isn't stupid. It knows that player movement is key to its popularity and fan interest. This is about 3 superstar players teaming up on a single team to the detriment of the league. The James Harden Trade is a perfect example. James couldn't be kept on the Thunder so they were forced to trade him to Houston. Harden was so good that he made Houston a contender. Now instead of the Super team OKC, you have two contenders. So each team will have one or two superstars and role players. That is what this new CBA is trying to get and I'm here for it.

I think they way to solve this you can’t be traded for two years if you sign above the regular max threshold

A few times now I've heard you say that the player movement contributes to the NBA's popularity increase. Yet more often than not fans are complaining about players constantly moving and forcing trades etc. I think new fans seeing a team they choose to support go from bad to good to bad again or vice versa over the space of a few weeks because of superstars acting like children or having too much say is a massive put off, especially seeing it is a relatively common thing. Like if I see my team sign a big name in free agency for good money the last thing I wanna see is that same guy leave in 3 months time for some silly reason and be back to tanking, it's stressful and annoying. Less player movement will be a great thing.

I'm drafting college seniors that can play now. Once they get good you can't afford to keep them anyway so I'd keep drafting juniors and seniors that are proven. Why pay a 19 year old a max deal after one good year after riding the bench for 2 years?

Youre looking at it wrong, the reason these guys get paid so much is cuz theyre worth it as a business principle. The root of the issue is not player movement, it's the imbalance in player value and player contracts, aka the salary cap. As long as their is a line that artificially caps a players worth, theirs gonna be shenanigans bubbling under, and players will find ways to do as they will knowing their worth more than what they can get due to the cap.

Why not just have a rule where if a guy gets a super max or a max in general and he requests a trade then when said player gets traded he can only get paid 80 percent of said salary but the team he got traded to will have the full contract go towards their their salary cap That will be true penalization to the players and have these big market teams rethinking about the moves
