Actually there is some training but it depends on the miltary and there grenades certain SAS British units are trained to cook for 2 seconds with nades that explode in 4-5 seconds. I believe parts of usmc do similar.

I ALWAYS max my Intelligence and Luck. Hell, you can break the game balance altogether by using implants and chems to max out your SPECIAL stats, though you're going to need a LOT of Fixer to offset the addictions or take the Logan's Loophole trait. If you use alcohol on top of chems, ALWAYS follow it up with Mentats and Party Time Mentats to offset the Intelligence penalty or recruit Cass for her Whiskey Rose perk. You'll still get addicted to alcohol (again, barring Logan's Loophole), but you just won't suffer the INT penalty. I also make it a point to do the DLCs BEFORE ever tackling any of the main quest. That way, you don't have to worry about tackling them later because the game ends when you finish the Battle of Hoover Dam. This isn't like Oblivion where you can keep playing after finishing the main quest. With max Intelligence, Luck, and Speech, you can easily power through much of Dead Money, including winning big at blackjack. You'll need high Speech, too, if you want to save Dog/God. You can also convince Joshua Graham to spare Salt-Upon-Wounds or fight SUW normally at the end of Honest Hearts, blow through Old World Blues, and get Ulysses to ally with you during the final battle of Lonesome Road (He has a VERY HIGH series of speech checks; the rep check doesn't matter). By the time I've even gotten to Ulysses' Temple, I've already maxed out Speech, Science, Survival, Lockpick, Unarmed, Repair (including taking the Jury Rigging perk), and Medicine; and this is all before ever entering the Strip.

Just like the original Fallout, hell in the original if you get the autopsy data on the super mutants from the brotherhood of steel and have high enough intelligence and speech you can beat the master without trying as you can convince him that his plan is flawed due to the mutants being sterile.

The speech skill in New Vegas is probably a bit too much if you know what I mean. It might have been better if they diversified the skill checks so that it was less likely you’d choose the correct one every time. I suppose this is why the Outer Worlds separated speech into multiple skills.

No they just didn’t have the time to make every character a functioning human being.

Chris Schoenthaler That's quite commendable! I never went with Razz's or Poindexter's way in any playthroughs; now that I've seen them, courtesy of Mr. Ox, I'm glad I never did.

I agree on the "Basic human niceness"-thing being just that, nice. It would've also been interesting to have a possible combo outcome like TheJinx1441 suggested. I usually go the Mags-route simply because I tend to roleplay characters that help folks out in as concrete a way as possible and making sure they are properly drilled to survive made me feel the Mags-path to be the best. Also even though it's not shown in-game it's feasible to think the Misfits probably became a tighter-knit more communicative group during the war campaign and after surviving(if the Mags-path is chosen) which would somewhat comply with the "human niceness"-part even though in a weird curveball-kind of way.
