Well, it's not completely unknown. And, let's face it ... "the masses" generally don't have discerning tastes, which this group definitely requires. That said, it would be good, particularly for the members of the group, if more people were aware of how infinitely good they are.
I'm blown away. Lost for words. That song was written the year I was born. Eighty four years later this group makes we want to live another eighty four years when there are groups like this bringing the songs of my youth back to life. God bless you guys and gals.
OK, I will admit nothing thrills me more than great acapella, but this group and this song just blows me away. Tears to my eyes and chills up and down my spine. I’m apparently a bit late to the party here, but glad I found the door as I searched out inspiration for my own keyboard arrangement for a vocalist accompaniment. Amazing performance from incredible talent that spills forth from this group.
This song has always been a favorite of mine and I’ve heard many artist’s rendition of this over the years but this is by far in a unique class of its own. The vocal arrangement is first class. If I may I would just like you to consider an idea I have for that climatic tag ending you do so flawlessly well. At 3:47 when you guys sustain the word “night”, I think it would have an even more dramatic effect if the female lead singer “waits” a little and render “the nearness of you” rubato style instead of coming in too early. Other than that, Mr Hoagy Carmichael must smiling from ear to ear after listening to you guys perform this classic, historic and beautiful song. Keep up your magnificent work! ☮️🙏🎵🌺
I'm delighted by discovering this group. This is a gorgeous rendition of a gorgeous classic. Reminds me of The Manhattan Transfer's Nightingale Sang... but with your own unique talents. Magnificent.
If you can listen to this song all the way through without shedding a tear, you are literally a psychopath. I swear I haven’t cried this hard since my grandpa died, and I’m a grown man.
Goose Bumps!!!!!! That was AWESOME!!!!! I.m a big band buff and Love groups of "The Moderates" and others!!! Your close harmonies is spot on!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!
Oh my God you guys are good. My mother saying at the Met a soprano. My dad was in shows Off Broadway. I have 15 years singing in men's choruses and barber shops period I thought you should know.
So I think the very definition of creativity is taking something that everyone has access to (in this case a voice and four friends) and with the application of talent, commitment and time… turn something so mundane into something so magical and astounding. My God you guys are wonderful, off to see if I can find more stuff from Highline! Hoagy would be proud.
I like how this group is not focused on the camera, but each musician is free to close their eyes or to pan the gaze around to others. Those fluid motions enhance their senses and help them create that feather's edge.
They remind me of The Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, The Carpenters (especially when they first started out) and New York Voices, and I love those dissident jazz notes 🎼🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶
Wow!, me mataron muchachos!, estaba buscando distintas versiones de este tema y encuentro la de Uds. impresionante!!! tremendo arreglo, felicitaciones!
First, I just have to love/laugh at the 'one of my favorite Norah Jones songs' comment... Oh dear God. But at least they ARE listening, so there's that. Goodnight Hoagy, wherever you are! Tremendous job guys; really first rate. Only one humble suggestion really... For every third Jacob Collier philosophy/transcription/analysis video, just listen to a Take6 tune instead. Any Take6 tune, really. That will help balance all that stuff out real nice and smooth like... 😎😎😎
Hey, cdmjazz. It isn’t often you read about the 4Freshman and the HiLo’s. I just turned 90, so that means I was a jazz a cappella fan way back when. I even sang in a quartet while at Washington University back in the early 50’s in a competition which for years was barber shop renditions. We won it two years running with 4Freshman songs. I have loved jazz for most of my life which means I was listening to the big bands, especially Basie. Love Manhattan Transfer. Now I listen to Pentatonix, Quad and now these guys. A cappella is alive and well!!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️❤️👏🏻👏🏻
I have never heard you guys before. Where have you been? NIce sharp 11 ornamented resolution in the Alto at the end. Very creative writing there and throughout this Hoagy Carmichael classic. Really wonderful tone, balance and blend. Velvety Soprano, solid warm bass, and exceptional/beautiful singing in the inner voices as well. All the elements of a fine vocal jazz group. Keep up the great work! I am a fan. Do you just sing a cappella (I would have no problem with that, the way you sing) or do you also sing with a trio?
impressed beyond words (and yet i'll type a few ;p) I feel, frankly, genuinely blessed to have found you. Your music will move people. Move people I hope into (as John Cusack said this fall in a live appearance I attended) giving up the political party of republican or democrat, and just being an active, compassionate member of 'party humanity.' Leave resentment, hate, skepticism, sarcasm, judgement and just be in the moment with our fellow citizens of earth and enjoy this life we've been given. Your music will spread good will, please never give up doing what you do!! It will inspire!
Either my drink of water is too cold or you guys are sending chills up my spine!! Your sounds move me. Thank you for finding each other and playing together.
yesssssssssssssssssss A magnificent arrangement, exciting and sensitive execution, and technically excellent performance! I loved you guys! Jazzy greetings from São Paulo, Brazil :)
I know this comment will probably get buried, but I just wanted to let yall know that you just made my night. I've smiled unlike I have in a long while
Love this! This was my wife’s and my wedding song 30 years ago. We just celebrated our anniversary and I recorded it for her as a surprise...me and piano accompaniment. Your version is stunning. I absolutely loved it. Thank you for posting it and having such heavenly voices that perfectly blend together. Bravo!!
As a long-time fan of the Freshmen, the HiLos, Singers Unlimited and New York Voices, I am truly impressed! Your intonation and handling of close voicings is impeccable and the diction is marvelous. Hoping to hear more from you. That last chord resolution was amazing! Thank you for your artistry.
It's hardly the "elevator music" of jazz. It's the Schubert, Beethoven, and Ella Fitzgerald of jazz. It's the very essence of jazz, the very essence of music. Whether it's jazz or not jazz, however you want to categorize it, it's world-class magnificent!
