As a gerontologist, Leacey Brown knows the impact of the aging baby boomer population. However, she believes the design and disabilities are not just an aging issue. Leacey’s talk explores the need for universal design for all.
Leacey E. Brown is a gerontologist advocating for broader discussions about aging and older adults. She currently serves as the SDSU Extension Gerontology Field Specialist. Troubleshooting skills gained as a member of the U.S. Air Force enhances her professional capacity, allowing her to break aging issues into more manageable parts. She is convinced many of the challenges we face as we age could be reduced by consumer driven solutions.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Hi Leacey, I watch TED Talks to learn from smart people who know their subjects. This is a serious topic and I appreciate that you cared enough about it to share what you did here. I've done a little public speaking and I've read that it is the one thing more people fear than almost anything else. I admire your courage. I make design decisions in my real estate business on a regular basis and I am smarter about this topic because of you. Thank you.

Robert, I am grateful for your kind words. This was the most challenging speech I ever had the privilege to give. It was an incredible learning experience. I am honored to know that you found value in it. Thank you for reaching out.

So true, I have so many great memories of growing up in my parents home. These are some amazing points to think of as we age. :)

Most community leaders can't see the writing on the wall. Whether because of ignorance, apathy, or bigotry, they downplay the silver tsunami. Today marks 10,210 days after ADA1990's enactment. Most of the 169 towns, cities, and villages in my unlivable state (Connecticut) have yet to implement ADA's basic mandates. My goal is to move to a community where I can successfully age in place. I've made my apartment accessible; but I am living in a none-ADA complex in an unlivable community whose leadership has inexplicably approved more senior/disabled housing. My rights to access & mobility are not enforced. I want out!

Amazing talk and concepts! I don't think she needed to have such an aggressive and angry tone throughout the talk but this is a crucial concept for interior designers to learn, understand, and implement.

I find lever style handles to be something of a health hazard. I can't tell you the number of times I've caught jumpers and coats on them. Destroyed the article of clothing or been nearly torn off my feet. On the plus side, a lever style would allow me to open the door when I have my hands full. And I can see that I'll come to appreciate them when the arthritis that my grandfather had starts to kick in. I wonder if there's a compromise to that design that doesn't catch on clothing?

it's good overall presentation. but she can't be angry all the time, because it quickly becomes annoying to listen_ don't get me wrong she does have good pretty good point_. I have another note here, the transitions between her ideas and the slides is very poor. for example: she goes from talking about the lady who got beaten up by her husband to talking about design without any connection. Best of luck Leacey

I think your perception just makes you misinterpret her passion as probably unnecessary anger, which is absolutely a you issue.

Exactly, I'd say you were very passionate, not aggressive. Accessibility and inclusive design are taken for granted the world over despite the dire need to have them. Your "agression" is well founded and 100% justified.
