I live in Baytown. Our subdivision when we built in the 60's was around 20ft above sea level. It's now less than 7.

How long ago did you build if you don't mind me asking?

I lived in Baytown during hurricane Alicia in 1983. My then boyfriend's grandparents lived in Brownwood at the time. It was devastating wading through 5' of murky water full of snakes and rotting food to try and salvage anything. Mimi & PaPa Reed.

I grew up in Highlands in the 60's and 70's. A friend of mine lived in Brownwood. Their house backed right up to the bay. I remember the watermark in their garage from Carla. I think it's great that it's a nature center now, but because I remember the neighborhood from before, it kinda looks like a post-apocalypse landscape.

Very nice video. I worked for the regulatory agency charged with reducing/ending subsidence in the greater Houston area from 1988 to 2013. Some quick corrections: While industrial groundwater pumpage was substantial, there was also considerable municipal groundwater pumpage - it wasn't just industrial. There wasn't 15 feet of subsidence in the Baytown area. Best records indicate about 10-11 feet since 1920's to 2010's and I wouldn't be surprised if 12 feet occurred in some very site specific areas - but when you are at sea-level or close to it to start with, any change is devastating. There were houses or the remnants of houses well into the early 2000's. Many of the old houses had asbestos siding and no one wanted to deal with getting rid of them properly, until the Baytown Nature Center was officially created and the area was cleaned up. If you walk it today, you can still find some old artifacts (kitchen tiles, swing sets, mailboxes, etc).

This makes me want to cry. So heartbreaking that those people's homes just sank into oblivion. I went out there with a guy I was dating in the late 70s. I remember seeing backyards sloping down into the water and homes with moats around them. It was spooky creepy to me, but I couldn't look away. Damndest thing I'd ever seen in my 30 years. I'd been through Carla in a different coastal community, and we got hit really bad. But the Brownwood Addition event happened in slow motion, and that's what made it so eerie.

This is an excellent educational video. Thank you. I lived across Bayway Drive on Ashby Street when Hurricane Alicia pounded us almost into ruin. I remember the whole issue, including FEMA condemning the land there.

My dad went down there after a major flood and brought home an electric stove. Yea good idea to bring home an electric stove from a flood.

It's a crying shame what was done to this subdivision right in front of their eyes. This nature area is great for the poor critters that have been posioned and or run out of their environment by the relentless over building in other parts of the area.

Another great video. I have caught many trout and redfish around some of those homes. You just have to be real careful wading. Really careful!! I was living in Crosby when Alicia blew thru. Tore up our house in Bolivar pretty bad, but nothing like Brownwood.

I remember watching the news the evening before Alicia hit. Ron Stone said something like "well we're getting reports of flooding in Brownwood, but Brownwood floods when you spit".
