During our No Reserve road trip we got to sit down with Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art director, Julián Zugazagoitia, who walked us through their impressive collection. He share the history of the museum including how the Kansas City, MO, institution came to acquire one of the finest examples of a Guanyin sculpture in the world. “It’s almost an Indiana Jones account,” relays Zugazagoitia thanks to a Monuments Men ringleader who rescued it from abandonment in the snow, of all places. The collection came together in the 1930s during a time when traveling wasn’t an easy feat, and where the museum came a space for the local community could get a sense of the world. Other highlights in their collection include a giant Monet Water Lilies panel, a Gauguin, as well as one of the few Caravaggios in America.
