Really? It reminds me of the times you’re using one of those big urinals and you cross pee streams with the guy next to you. That’s crossing swords (in the UK anyway).
a few shows still running like always sunny, south park... clarkson's grand tour... jojo's bizarre adventure and captain tsubasa.... game sack is up there though.
Man when my phone alerts me of a new Game Sack video, I get so excited. This is my favorite channel, by far. My friend has a CDZ and he's thinking of selling it. Works perfectly still and I desperately want it. He's asking 500 for it and I just don't have that right now >.>
This ep made me go out and buy a Neo-Geo cd, got it for a cheap price and it came with a game. I love the consoles of the 90's and especially love 2d sprites so this was a must have...Saturn and Neo-Geo cd 4 lyfe!!!
With a reset button, the Neo Geo CD would have been 10 as much as the cartridge model. Reset buttons are worth more than gold and are used as currency in over 50 countries.
Awesome list. One of the small details I loved in Kabuki Clash was when you did a same character fight, the loser would turn into a Tanooki or Kitsune. Both japanese animals known to transform into humans in folklore. Just a neat touch. :)
Great episode, fellas. I've always been interested in the Neo Geo CD as a cheaper alternative to expensive AES carts so it was nice to see such a comprehensive rundown of the library.
Thanks for the kind words! I'd love to do a Neo Geo video, but I don't have a Neo Geo! I only do videos on games I physically own, since my show's all about great games you can get for cheap. Maybe someday!
I stumbled across this video literally one year after it was posted. Great job guys i really do enjoy all of your videos and love for video gaming and its history. Be encouraged that your work is very much appreciated!
What's interesting to note is even though IronClad was a Neo-Geo CD exclusive, they did have plans to release it on the Neo-Geo MVS. We can confirm this by the existence of the Wii Virtual Console's release. The game was a straight ROM release and not the cd version. Meaning, you could actually take the rom directly from the WII Virtual console and play it on your Neo-Geo MVS or AES by converting another cart to IronClad. It was quite a surprise in the Neo-Geo Community when it happened.
I didn't know the Neo Geo CD was developed as a cost-effective alternative to the original Neo Geo system. I always just figured it was a response to the ill-conceived CD system boom of the early 90s, but I guess a cost-reduced version makes more sense for the Neo Geo.
As I stated on their Facebook page a couple weeks ago, this is the only RU-vid subscription I anticipate new videos on. For some reason I can't find my comment on their page anymore though....
Space shooters are cool, and Twinkle Star Sprites looks cute, and I'd try playing that. But I'm just not a fighting game fan. Neo Geo Graphics were like combining SNES with Sega Genesis, and then injecting it with mild steroids. Some of those games were surprisingly polished. I bet 32X could match that quality, though. What's your take on that, cool cat?
I never had the privelage of playing a home NEO GEO console... Well except for the NEO GEO Pocket color. Yeah, 32X was Sega's biggest, but coolest mistake. The timestream would be very different if it weren't for that ugly black mushroom of an addon! :) Yet I have fond memories of Knuckles Chaotix, and a near perfect Space Harrier and After Burner arcade port.
I have to say, this is my favorite episode thus far. You showed me games that I'll be adding to my library very soon, that I had no idea about. But I was for sure that Dave would have liked Viewpoint and Top Hunter. We seem to have the same likes for certain shooters and platform games. Well anyways. Glad I could help out with the system and let me know if there is anything I could do to help out one of my favorite channels. Michael
You're awesome man. Just remember that this episode wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for your generosity. I think it would be tough sending some semi-random guys one of your systems and games. Thanks for trusting us.
Viewpoint is awesome when you're watching someone else who rocks at it play. Did you see the pre-Game Sack review of Viewpoint? It's intentionally awful: Viewpoint Review - Neo Geo AES
After watching this episode I went to ebay and searched Turf Masters and sure enough there is a copy on there for £11,000 ($19,000) LMAO good & luck with that one.
But it's all arcadestyle games. I wish they would have used the hardware for some other genres in those days. A RPG or Action Adventure for the AES oder CD would have been awesome. On the big cartridges you had about 80 MB (640 Mbit) of space. If they went with smaller sprites there would have been plenty of space putting Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6 to shame in 1994/1995, which had t o deal wtih 4 MB of Space on the SNES-cartridge.
It's great how new hardware can really boost interest in older games. The release of the Polymega system makes the whole Neo Geo CD library actually playable with incredibly short load times.
Hell yeah, Twinkle Star Sprites! I happened upon that game at Arcade UFO once and immediately fell in love. How that game didn't get ported around as much as Puzzle Bobble I'll never know.
Your show is better than a lot of the game review videos out there. Some ideas for episodes and opinions. Bad voice acting in games. Show less Shooters. Coop 16 bit games. Left in Europe. Theres always been lots of talk about Mario and Sonic. Bonk for turbografx was the competing mascot. Could do a brief history on him. Be amusing to see you two switch roles. Joe acts like Dave and vice versa.
You were able to point out the loading times on Last Blade in quite an amusing way. The skit at the end was priceless as well. Hope to see more, as with the X68000 comp as well!
As a kid I dreamed of owning a neo geo...wanted it soooo damn bad. After watching this video I can truly say that I still want it soo damn bad. Literally every game looks fun. Guess I'll buy that SNK game if its still in the ps store.
Had a Neo Geo CD that I had to sell on ebay before college, broke my heart. My collection consisted of Real Bout Fatal Fury 1,2 and special, KOF's 94-98, and Samurai Showdown's 1-4. The load times are so long you become immune to load times in general... sigh, I dont know if I'll ever love again.
Its crazy, so many good games in Neo Geo. If they release a completely new console CD with reasonable prize, 3rd party support, its will blow playstation out of water. They were pretty much keep exclusive feeling, put insane pricetag cause they know they made best of the best instead make its accessible for all people
neo geo AES is the one and only for me. still got it and its still impressive. the sound and the graphics are sick. the music really sounds like cd. that is so impressive if you think about that the console came out in 1990. the console was like 8 years ahead of its time. i mean. even the saturn and the playstation couldnt emulate metal slug, last blade or samurai spirits/shodown perfectly. there are still some animations missing from backgrounds or charakters. and there where no loading time at all on the AES
Erm, so, I checked eBay on a whim, and I saw an offer for Neogeo Turf Master AES for USD 20,000, and the CD version for 1k. Just.... wow And the MVS cartridge is only about USD200 =w=
This was a great review but there is a couple things I'd like to mention: 1. you can reset the system from the controller by holding down all 4 buttons and the start button 2. I'd recommend you get the tototek controller converter to play this system with ps2 controllers. they're way better than the neo geo controllers and much more affordable
The weird sound effect in Fighters History Dynamite is because you got dizzied by the last hit. Each character has a specific weakpoint that causes them to get dizzy if you take too many hits there: Mizoguchi's is his headband and Jean's is the French flag on his thigh, as can be seen from the fact that it's flashing, meaning it's already taken some hits.
I just got boxed Neo Geo CD with 2 games for less than 60 bucks for it in Japan! ($43 for boxed console!) The moment I see the price tag on this "Junk" Neo Geo CD on top shelve at Hard Off gave me a Hard On! I'm so glad I waited and didn't import the system!
Mr. Dave, you were right, sweet game, and imo a sweet shirt. Shirtwin is a tie, that Night Trap shirt is pretty awesome too :) I can't believe that Neo Geo cartridges were so damn expensive, that's unreal. I knew they were expensive, but damn. Metal Slug is the greatest run n' gun series in history dammit. I love the SNK stuff, it's almost all arcade game goodness, which I love. Any plans on doing more arcade game episodes? Great job as always guys, thanks for the goodness, and damn those after credit bits are entertaining :)
Wow, wow... No Art Of Fighting?! There are some of the 3 best games in the system, plus the third one has animations in the level od Street Fighter 3...! I missed the King of Fighters series and also some nice "sports" games, like Super Sidekicks, Windjammers and that golf game, Neo Turf Masters, but you guys already covered this one. Nice vídeo, I love the Neo Geo CD, the games are very collectible, nice artworks in the manuals and cd´s. Treasures!
yeah i know AOF is one of the most important fighters on the NeoGeo and the fighting genre period. AOF3 was great even though i prefer AOF 2 more. didn't like most of the characters in AOF3.
AOF3 it´s pretty, but has zero charisma, I really dislike the characters, no Yuri, Eiji, John or Takuma, it´s the same they did in SF3, good gfx, lame characters. I really Like AOF2, face damage, amazing Boss, even it´s much worse to play than SF2, it´s a good game!
***** well i wouldn't say it has ZERO charisma, it has tis charm. the characters were its biggest problem. the really good ones were like 4 at most. the rest were OK but not as great as previous AOF games. other than that i loved everything about it like the graphics the backgrounds and the music (oh my God the music was so good) and of course the story. come to think of it all of the SNK fighters had really good stories. thats the reason i like them way more than any other fighters like SF2 & 3 or Tekken and the like. AOF1 & 2 had that neat feature of showing face damage and the players being visibly exhausted as they are about to lose all their health. i always thought that was neat and unique. you brought up something interesting about SF3. its just like AOF 3 where they changed all characters except for the 2 main ones. hmmm interesting !. even though AOF3 in japan never happened and it was considered a side story and not the real sequel to AOF2. i really hope SNK brings those old classics back. AOF was the sole reason i got into fighting games and the main reason i got my NeoGeo. funny fact, i bought my NeoGeo AES because of AOF2 and my NeoGeo CDz because of AOF3.
Ahh one of my absolute favorite systems ever. I absolutely love my damn CDZ. I've got 67/97 neo cd games. The svideo out of the system is fantastic and the controller is just ever so amazing. If you're an avid cd collector like me you almost absolutely have to have a cdz. Another FYI for technical accuracy. The CD rom is the exact same speed 1x. It uses more system memory at a faster speed so that it can cache more information per second into the memory. A 2x drive plus this ram upgrade would of made the cd loading vastly better. I think metal slug is one of the perfect ports and the cd version might be the best. Btw guys absolutely love your guys videos as always
i think SNK missed a big opportunity with the CD system. Just releasing old titles again is OK but they could of opened it up for more 3rd party developers.
Savage Reign looks insane, looked it up and it is on the Fūun Super Combo Ps2 game released in Japan, so I actually have a chance to play it! Thanks Game Sack!
Savage Reign was infamous back then for its borderline copyright-infringing characters. Captain Commando, Muten from Dragon Ball, the policeman boss from Final Fight, the red/yellow ninjas like in Mortal Kombat, even the athlete chick is heavily inspired by a Ranma 1/2 character. I still liked it though.
Amazing episode ! You guys are the best ! Keep doing the amazing work! I almost bought the 1x cd read version back in 1995 here in Brazil, but I ended buying the Sega Saturn and didn't regret, as the Sega console also had lots of SNKs classics. And the loading times on the 1x cd rom version are really really annoying...
great episode guys! but why no King of Fighters? i know the load times can be frustrating on these ones haha but kof94 holds up hehe, no loads between rounds... the guy who lends you the system didint have a kof game?
That was pretty cool. I never really did get to play much of anything Neo Geo, but I did get to play I think Samurai Shodown 2 and Puzzle Bobble at an arcade machine at a local laundromat. They were some fun games for sure. Crazy how many fighting games it has lol
Contemplating buying one of these because of just how ridiculous AES collecting has become. I was contemplating buying an AES and a converter but that's easily $600 right there wheras I have seen bundles on eBay that come with two controllers and a few games for $250. What would you guys reccomend?
I usually create a topic on Non-stop Gaming board on GAMEFAQS to discuss the new videos. A lot of us retro gamers really like keeping up with the show. Top notch episode guys When are we gonna see a top 10 32-bit era games?
I had always wanted an AES or to restore an MVS cabinet, but you guys have tied my hands on my inhibitions concerning the Neo CD. I'm most definitely going to save up a bit and track one down.
Great episode as always! Ive still got my Neo Geo cd working, loading screens are still in todays games, so im not bothered, plus i have a Neo Geo X which i use for travelling, and its not that bad. Thumbs up!
Great episode. Thanks for covering the NGCD which is often overlooked behind the AES and MVS. The Last Blade games are pretty much the only ones I have found to be unplayable on the NGCD, most other games have reasonable load times.
