I really do not mind vision story telling, but "style over substance" isn't the same thing. I actually am a total sucker for a highly stylized film, but only if it's got a foundation to hold it up right. It's like this...if you make some fancy looking ice cream dish you'll enjoy the ice cream, but the looking "fancy" part also gets you excited to eat it, a great combo. Where if you make some fancy looking asparagus, it might look intriguing but its still gonna taste worst than dirt. The stylization doesn't do much unless it already has a solid core to enhance.

Basically, it's a film about how Hollywood is full of evil, depraved perverts who like to rape kids, screw corpses, and literally eat children in a satanic ritual manner in order to consume their very essence and souls. With that said, I have to give it much respect for being a very good visual metaphor for Hollywood, while at that same time, remaining a completely accurate historical documentary also.

I hate when Hollywood tries to look self aware but it's so obvious they're not. The whole time watching this I thought "yeah these actresses are probably that soulless and vain in real life. The agents and producers are probably that Pervy and sadistic. Yep Hollywood does believe that sexual gratification and money are all that matters." I know I would groan hearing the commentary on this film where everyone is trying to say something poignant and failing. The truth is nobody had to act for this film. What's the difference between an actor and a pornstar? A pornstar is decent and humble

Gaspar Noe, Darren Aronofsky, and my favorite, NWR take me places and deliver messages very meaningful and personal. Im glad hes taken the more Valhalla Rising and Only God Forgives route. He is an artist and seeing his work (no matter how uncomfortably gruesome or morbid) makes me traumatized and i guess thats my film fetish.

BananaCellphone lol dumb? Mainstream movies are a lot of dumber than movies from Refn. Mainstream movies tell their story so simple as possible for the less smarter audience. Artmovies tell their story with deeper meanings and symbols.

If you like deciphering the point of the story or don't mind reading/watching people explain what's up afterwards (example: Chris Stuckman's videos on Enemy or Only God Forgives), then you will probably like it. I haven't seen it, but knowing the director's stuff, watch a movie like Only God Forgives first. And if you hate it, I don't imagine The Neon Demon would be much different for your opinion. However, if you like it, appreciate what's great about it, then you will probably enjoy The Neon Demon.

Art house films are never about the story though , they're more about the very subtle details and they usually go into depth about their characters and sets of Ideas and/or emotions in a mostly abstract way . If you like a traditional film with a straight forward entertaining or thrilling story such as let's say The Dark Knight then art house films are most probably not for you , but this is just as far as I know about art house films .

fady wadie saw Drive. thought it was amazing. saw only god forgives and a big no thank you. i dont mind films where you have to "think" but at the same time when it gets ridiculous then i wished i had passed. going by chris's review he really went soft on this movie because of how it was shot. i can name a lot of movies that are shot well and look amazing but the story is mediocre to complete shit. i dont really care how a film looks for the most part as long as there is a coherent decent story. it can have all the twist, loops and turns it wants as long as the final product makes some kind of sense.
@DarinMichaelGrant
@DarinMichaelGrant 8 лет назад
Dude, the definition of a "different, strange, artsy, stylized film" is that it *will not* have a traditional story that everyone will like. This film is no different. The story is kind of there, but overall it is about the visual poetry that Refn is so obsessed with. Don't go to this film wanting a "decent story" because that is not what it's about. Just like Upstream Color, Holy Motors or any other "weird, arty film" of the last few years, it's about experimenting with what cinema can do. Not all of it will grab you. But it's the risk and daring that deserves to be praised.

I certainly would not put it that way. It is in the Horror genre, and it succeeds in that aspect. I went into the film with it being spoiled and I still had that sense of suspense and an eerie feeling throughout most of it. Even with that I was still heavily invested in HOW he was going to present what I knew was coming. 10/10 movie for me.

SPOILERS: Chris, I think Keanu's character was kind of a red herring. Like with most of the male characters Elle's guard was up wondering what they really wanted from her when actually it was the females she needed to look out for. The dream sequence with Keanu was just another representation of her suspicions about him. I actually liked the switch up of females being the antagonists as opposed to the stereotypical male dominant jerk where every woman is trying to get his attention just to be deceived and thrown away (i.e. Showgirls). The guys here were up front and straightforward about who they were and what they wanted. None of them were any real danger to her and they even gave her opportunities and in some cases tried to protect her. Lust, envy, malice, and deceit came from the girls. And of course gluttony.... Basically, all of the 7 deadly sins except for maybe sloth. Anway, it was a visually STUNNING movie!! I give it a B+ too! And an A++ for cinematography.
@aaronpeters6209
@aaronpeters6209 6 лет назад
Toukon4ever It was very much about the dominance heirarchy among women and their competition for male attention now that I think about it. It's a common notion in the red pill community that women that fuck up and ruin their lives drag down the next generation coming up. Crabs in a bucket applied to female nature. There is so much to this film. I do think Reeves was more symbolic of Hollywood. Preying on the dreams of young women. But I still have to agree with you.

I'll check it out. Films directed by very "I AM SO MEEE" directors can go either way. Stopped watching Tree of Life halfway through for this reason. I could FEEL the director whispering into my ear, "Look at this. Aren't I so great? AREN'T I A GENIUS? LOVE ME! LOVE THIS SHIT! I want you to think that I am a fucking GENIUS! FUCKING THINK IT! ME! MEEEEEE!" ....it totally rips you out of the experience because there's so much ego and self-absorption just oozing out of it. The truly great directors are transparent. They're invisible.

Eliot Davidson No worries, for you it's a good movie, but I'd have to side with Thinking Out Loud, it's pretentious. Even the comic, which is pretty good, is pretty pretentious and sort of muddled. And with this being an adaption, well... Again, just an opinion, it's all good.
@thinkingoutloud3757
@thinkingoutloud3757 8 лет назад
Eliot Davidson Not so much "self-masturbatory" as it is trying way too hard to be profound. In other words, I didn't feel the film was insincere, but it was just crafted badly and with a loss of perspective. Film is an art of suggestion. It's a language with the viewer. The easiest example is when a film's music is out of place and pushing the desired emotion too hard. The reason it feels wrong and "cheesy" is because it went from a suggestion to a demand. Tree of Life is a giant shit-storm of demands. It's terrible.
@thinkingoutloud3757
@thinkingoutloud3757 8 лет назад
Eliot Davidson Real quick, before you take me saying "crafted badly" the wrong way, I want to clarify that Tree of Life has some of the best cinematography I've ever seen. Absolutely jaw-dropping, gorgeous shots. Horrible movie. You can have master-class technique as a guitarist and still design a bad song. Hope that makes sense.
