The fact that you are comparing it against luxury cars like Lexus, Audi, BMW, etc. instead of its direct competition like Toyota Coralla and Honda Civic tell me this Mazda is a winner.
@@KG370 Yea, if you are comparing base models but the Sport Touring Civic cost almost the same as the Premium Mazda 3. Plus Mazda 3 is a new refresh, give it a couple months and the price will drop. Your making it sound like it's a huge price difference, which it's not, but Mazda 3 just looks so much better.
That’s truly a beautiful car, Mazda always Kills it with the design and pricing for their vehicles. My wife is talking about wanting the sedan version. I mean you just can’t beat the price👍🏻
5:23 YES. I saw one of these today in a parking lot and I actually took a walk around it to get a better look because the styling was reminiscent of something that I couldn't quite place. And as soon as you mentioned it, it clicked. The Brera was a beautiful car, and so is this. Good review!
@@kevina2052 for a non hybrid petrol it's good, you need to consider US and other countries MPG is worked out different in the UK it's quoted of getting over 50mpg
In the United States it's quoted as 24mpg city/32 highway. For that size engine in 2019, even with AWD, that's not very good. This engine has been around for way too long. Mazda needs to get their skyactiv-X engine out there..
The new Mazda 6 is amazing! Just test drove it and it is dead quiet on the inside with all the technology and luxury that you could ever ask for, all under 30k
The engine is incredibly reliable, gets perfect MPG (higher than what it estimates) and is reliable(i like to say it twice). Id take that over an unreliable powerful engine anyday. And the driving experience is incredibly quick I would say.
The reason the digital fuel range is different is all in the name... range, it's a calculation based on your driving behavior. The analog fuel meter is based on volume in the gas tank, how much liquid gas is left.
Yep! I occasionally take a chance, and drive to Brooklyn, NY (25 miles away) on a 20 mile tank. With calm , clear, highway driving and maximum efficiency, I’m able to make the trip with 7 extra miles in the tank. (2018 CX-9)
1) I love your enthusiasm for this car. 2) I love that you recognize this car as a masterpiece in design. 3) I love my 2024 AWD edition Mazda3! Such a wonderful and fun car.
You should have tested the 3 wheel slip test in sport mode and out of sport mode. The car activates G vectoring at that point and it will work a lot better.
You hit it. It is a compact car competes with the Corolla, Civic, and a host of others.........and would certainly be my choice in this segment. Oh well, m plenty of other reviewers on the Tube.
It's one of the only mazdas in production that doesn't have a turbo option. And it's $30k for the one he reviewed. So yeah that's a disappointment. I have a 2017 VW GLI that cost a fraction of the price for way more power and almost the same mpg. Plenty to whine about
That 2.5L Skyactive engine is a sweet piece...I like more power too but that naturally aspirated engine trans combo is still one of the best on the road.
For what you get you can’t complain, the fit and finish rival luxury cars it’s well refined. I think Mazda is being smart about NOT including a turbo. I’ll have to look up the weight on this car, I’m surprised it feels slow with the 2.5L. My 2016 3, 2.0L 155 hp, manual 6 speed, isn’t fast but has no trouble keeping up or on on-ramps.
@@JimBobe when you put a turbo on something like this you get reliability and longevity problems, like with Honda, they use a 1.5 turbo, the crv suffer from oil consumption, and the civic has the same engine, they went from 4th to 15th in reliability. Same with EcoBoost, lots of reliability issues, pretty much guaranteed turbo(s) replacement at 100,000 miles
I have had mine for a week. Have not seen any on the road in Southern Ca. Had to sell my new Mazda 12 years ago after my father passed. Had the 2005 5 door. Was going to get a Civic, but I fell in love again with the Mazda.
@@IsaacRayNJ Not really because one is miles and the other is level in the tank. The mileage one probably adapts to your driving and average fuel economy. Its not a linear gauge like the fuel level gauge.
I had one for a loaner and I was pissed I bought a cx5 instead. Its infinitely nicer than my 2017 mazda3. Awd is a nice bonus and the interior is easily best in class
I got a 2018 Mazda3 Touring Sedan with the premium package. Love the car. I was a little sad when I saw the 2019’s. But I got over it when I thought about it and realized the compression ignition engine is still on the way. Plus better features and tweaks get added each year. So maybe relax and enjoy your 3 like I am. Maybe trade it in a few years.
Psylent Productions Same here, I got my 2018 Mazda3 Hatchback in at the end of 2017. I heard of the new 3’s coming and was dissapointed I got one too soon, but now I love my hatchback. Probably when I pay it off I’ll get the new one in 2019
I have a '14 Mazda3 that I love! Have been thinking about trading it in on a '19 CX5 because I'd like a little more room and AWD. But now I'm torn! Maybe I can live w/o a little more room!
Victor Martinez I would wait. The 2.5l engine may be sticking around for a while longer while the rest of the car improves, but one thing I think will change soon is the transmission. They’ll likely go to an 8 speed or 10 speed to accommodate an updated version of the Skyactiv G engine giving it better fuel economy and performance.
I've owned mine since 2020 ... it's the best car I've ever owned. It's fun to drive and it's got all wheel drive. I haven't watched this to see what the flaw is but I sure can't think of one that would make any tiny difference as to whether I would buy one of these again
Good review, except for the praise of the AWD. There needs to be a standard that allows a manufacturer to place an AWD badge on a vehicle. If the vehicle won’t move with 3 wheels spinning, it’s NOT AWD & it’s NOT great.
Nice job, Tommy. You've really evolved into an excellent car reviewer. The best at TFL, if I'm being honest. I hope you stay true to honest reviews. I really enjoy your videos!
Great video. I own since new a 2009 Mazda 3 s hatchback 2.3 liter 5 speed auto. I have 205,000 miles with no major repairs. BTW my window sticker says parts content 95% Japan.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers Right, to get three wheels with no traction means you're driving on ice or stuck in a mud patch lol. Both bad and both are scenarios that you shouldn't be driving in anyways. Just hang up the keys and call in sick to work lol.
What isn't good? One big problem is that parking on city streets will produce a bashed grill frequently, since it has no effective front bumper. This is not unique to Mazda, there are plenty of other new cars I would never buy because the front is unprotected.
Took my Mazda 3 in to be serviced at Mazda today and got this car as a loaner until they finish servicing my car. It’s actually a nice car I like the interior and features
I own a 2007 mazda 3 mps.what a fantastic car.big trunk space.large space and headroom for rear passengers.lot of room and space in front.very nice everyday family car.i feel the BK model is the best
If I lived and drove at least a mile and up to two miles above sea level I might find the NA engine in the Mazda3 lacking in performance. But that's an environment that only a minuscule portion of the US public faces (i.e. About 1/4 of one percent). A 0-60 time of 7 seconds (C&D testing) at near sea level is more than adequate for the vast majority of drivers, especially if it's coupled with excellent handling. Typically TFL discussions of performance in vehicles with naturally aspirated engines include a reference to the elevation of Denver/Boulder. That should have been included here. I'm usually skeptical about the value of AWD in a small, light FWD-biased vehicle. Typically a good set of snow tires and the weight of the engine over the drive wheels will accomplish about 95% of the missions of an AWD vehicle. But if Mazda's claims about the programming of the AWD system in the Mazda3 are valid, this may be an exception. A poor man's version of Acura's SH-AWD that aids handling in many situations. Comments will be full of the typical youtube fanboys who believe that any car with less than 300 HP is suitable only for little old ladies and for whom "performance" consists of stoplight drag racing but Mazda has said repeatedly that the corporate direction of the company no longer includes Mazdaspeed vehicles. Instead, they hope to improve the brand's limited sales appeal with vehicles that handle well, have appealing profiles and upscale interiors. It's unclear whether that corporate strategy will succeed but it's also clear that earlier strategies didn't work. And for the tiniest of the independent "major" brands, the new direction is unlikely to be changed.
I get so tired of hearing everyone saying how underpowered Mazdas are. They have plenty of power for most people's needs. I have a '14 Mazda 3 2.0 manual and consider it a "quick" car. Very few people need a car with a 5 second 0-60. Mazdas are more about overall driving dynamics, which can't be beaten at the price.
I hated the rear end when Mazda first showed it, and felt the massive, squashed C pillar was odd. But now I think it's perfect, and that this car is stunning - especially in this color/wheel spec. Funny how taste can change quickly once the eye adjusts. I also felt the current gen WRX was hideous when released, but now I like it. Go figure.
Took me a sec too with the new Mazda designs. Took a bit longer with the Subaru’s though. They just don’t look “Subaru” enough to me. But my idea of a “Subaru” are the earlier rally designs and the 22B LOL.
hands down the most reliable vehicle i've ever owned. i've got a 2012 mazda 3 with over 230,000 miles on it. haven't done much to it. shocks breaks and changing fluids. still the original clutch.
Same experience... Put over 200k on my '07 with only unexpected repair being an AC compressor around 125k. Have 115k on my early production '14 with no issues other than a broken sunroof switch and center console hinge.
ive ordered mine getting it in october :)... im getting the SE LUX 2.0 model in soul red crystal :) cant wait. fantastic video btw buddy. subbed and liked m8
Of course the fuel level and range are going to be different. The level is the physical level measured from a float in the tank. While the fuel range is calculated based on fuel consumption and fuel level.
2 questions: Are you turning off the traction control/stability control, and engaging sport mode for the slip tests? Were you at a high altitude on the acceleration runs? My neighbors 3 hatch runs great at close to sea level.
some quirks and features after owning 2022 mazda 3 for few months: 1 camera is not wide because there is 360 degree system in upper versions 2 you can bind seat positions to separate car keys 3 it is imposible to open center concle when back seats are folded down 4 sport button is for gearbox exclusively (there is no sport button in manual) 5 key is trash
Learn one important thing about the Mazda 3. The 2.5 are okay off the line. But they shine after 80 MPH! They are not $40,000 cars you keep comparing them to.
The reason the reversing camera doesn't take up the full screen is that the car can be specced with a 360 degree camera. When the happens, the reversing camera is to one side whilst the top down view is on the other.
You should test that lane departure assist. Set a piece of thick rubber mat in your travel lane in the path of the right tires and see if the car will allow you to steer around it slightly over the white line. Just imagine the rubber mat being a small piece of plywood with nails sticking up. If the car doesn't allow you to avoid something like that then Mazda may end up getting sued for replacement tires... LOL
I bought the 2019 FWD version of this car with Mica Blue Exterior and Red Interior. Extremely well made and quiet on the highway. For me the current four cylinder engine is more than enough for my daily commute. I don't see a need for turbo. It drives just fine as it stands.
I'm happily surprised that I gave you a shot.. This review is way better than I thought 💭..btw thats a big compliment I'm giving you.. Great Job tall and thin 👍🏾👏🏾 I wish mazda added the Turbo engine to the 6 speed manual.. Love me some clutch
One thing about the keyfob that I didn't realize until I read about it in the manual is that the cover comes off and there's space inside it for the strangely-shaped spare key. I don't know if sticking the key in there gives it more heft or rigidity, but it does explain the size.
😂😂😂 *Blink three times if you rather flip burgers.* 😉 Blink three times, followed by left eye wink and a tongue lick to the right eye, if your dad is not your Real dad at all !!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
It's *Probably giving enough "drive" to the rear,* but it's all going to the which ever rear wheel, that is on the rollers. I think mazda started using pretty good front to rear Couplers, but need a Rear right to left Coupler or LSD. I Doubt, they would spend more money on that, so simulated LSD By independent wheel Brakes would work well. 😉
@@Derkenblosh2 You will NEVER see the rotory again except in a hybrid system as an alternative power unit. Rotory's cannot pass emissions in America. Now you can get the RX-9 in Australia and Japan and maybe even Europe. But you will NEVER see one in America.
The 2.0 engine paired with a turbo giving 250 torque and 230 horsepower would be perfect for this as the top level. With sedan sales declining across the board, no matter how great this car looks isnt going to sell it when you have a powertrain that matches Corolla and Civic. I had this same engine in my 2014 Mazda3.
All good points, and overall a solid review. Some constructive criticism; stay on target. I was getting whiplash from going to the interior, to the traction test, back to the exterior, and back again to the interior again. I think you did this as a means of not letting the review linger on any one section too long, but this was just a tad bit too much. Keep it up though Tommy! You have a good eye for the things that matter.
Why did you stop doing the roller slip test in the loading dock? Or do you not chance that anymore after the Tesla??? LOL I don't like the look of that Mazda 3. I did like the '07 Mazda 3 that I had driven years ago.
Thank you for pointing out everything you dislike or could be a flaw. It’s very good to drive. The interior is amazing to look at, touch, the seats are excellent and it’s so quiet inside. I might buy one now but I want to wait for the Skyactiv-X engine later this year or turbo within two years (I assume). For how advanced this car is there is still legitimate competition that I image will only get better in a couple years.
The big flaw is the small back seat 5:37 since it cannot be used for UBER/Lyft. Lease residuals (and therefore lease costs) are based on the market for 3 year old cars. Since the 3 year old market is now driven by whether a car can be used for UBER/LYFT, this car will have low residuals, and higher lease costs than Corolla, Sentra, Elantra and others which can be used.
@Joseph Gross They're only going to make a Speed3 if Mazda see's a market for it. Its the same reason why the Evo isn't made anymore, not enough people bought em, and its also why Subaru has been so lazy to develop a new engine for the STI.
Putting the car on these rollers is NOT the same as trying to mimic ice. When the weight of the car hits the rollers it creates some friction on the rollers due to weight. Nice try, but it’s not an apples to apples test.
Skyactiv X is not a more advanced naturally aspirated engine, it's actually supercharged. Not necessarily for performance rather just to supplement compression for compression ignition
The digital "fuel" have you're talking about is not supposed to measure the gas level, this the measurement of the miles to drive with the current gas in the car.
As an engineer, the less moving parts you have the less likely things can go wrong that goes with every mechanical gadget you buy. Checkout driven and the other different car reviewers that actually talked to them. Being biased is easy being objective is hard
I liked the video, and I love the car because is a peace of good engineering! I don’t think the issue is the engine. This car is better then most of his competitors.
Fuel gauges are usually logarithmic i.e. little movement for each gallon when full, lots of movement when almost empty. Range meters are linear. You were just seeing that difference
As an owner of one of these AWD models since early May, I have to agree with everything said on this video. Spot on. Great car overall, improved in almost every way... except for fuel economy and power. Both of which are noticeably down from my 2016 Mazda3 GT. Not horribly so, but still a bit disappointing.
Randy Ross Yeah I don’t know why that is. I’d like somebody from Mazda to explain why the SkyActiv 2.5 engine has gotten slower and less fuel efficient over the past few years. My 2015 Mazda 6 has this same engine and it accelerates faster and gets better fuel economy than the newer 6’s. It’s rated at 25/37 but I can get as high as 39 at times.
@@bobbowie9350 Regardless, it's only 170 pounds heavier than my 2016. Yet it feels slower than the heavier CX-5 with the same drivetrain. And my fuel economy has shown to be 25% higher too. Maybe Mazda messed up the tuning on some of these new 3's?
Toyota and Honda are so focused on competing with each other that they forgot Mazda has been trying to compete as well. Because of that, Mazda has truly come on top in recent years with beautiful styling and sportiness. The way they center the dash reminds me of the Rx7 FD.
The "Speed" name is not going to return. Mazda is moving the brand up market to compete with ze Germans. That's not to say that cars that offer Mazdaspeed-like HP/torque and handling/braking won't happen, but they won't be branded/marketed like Mazdaspeed was. Mazdaspeed was a direct response to Honda's Type-R badged cars, and those were targeted at the 20-30 something "Fast and Furious" crowd: big spoilers, big exhaust tips, graphics, etc. The new performance models will be more along the lines of the BMW M/Audi RS/Mercedes AMG line up; they're go-faster models for grown ups who don't want to drive cop magnets.
The reason it slipped when you did the traction test with the rear wheel on the street is because the rear differential is an open differential. A serious all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive system would have a limited slip or locking differential. The car is absolutely beautiful inside and out. Those engines go for a long time and it has a real transmission instead of a high-maintenance dual-clutch or a short-lived CVT.
