The MDX is a Iconic. Own a 2008 MDX with 140,0000 miles. Everything works and still looks great. Best car I have owned. Now I have an excuse to let it go!!!
At this point, I'm convinced that none of these auto channels want to actually learn to use the touchpad correctly. They don't even try. Just complain that it's not a touch screen.
6:14 The system was designed as a 1:1 correlation between the pad and screen, and it’s not an invisible cursor. You don’t drag around to figure out where the cursor is; rather the selection is exactly where your finger is.
I'm frustrated that so many 3 row SUVs come only with captain's chairs in the second row. This is a pretty good idea to have the center seat removable, however once it's removed the Captain's chairs don't have inboard armrests.
Lazy design on Acura. My 2007 Honda Odyssey has the same removable center seat on the 2nd row but the the captain chairs have armrests. Plus the removed chair can be stored under floor compartment.
I agree with you about captains chairs. With three kids the captains chair setup does not work well because it means I would lose most of the trunk space. It really annoys me that the upper trim levels of many cars cannot be had with a bench. I'm glad Acura didn't go for this fad.
@@CoralSea gone are the days of that. Neither my 2013 nor my 2018 have the ability to store the middle seat in the floor. It is removable though! I wish ALL SUVs had the option to remove the middle seat!!
Tommy, great video as always! Just want to clarify one thing. The horsepower is 290, and the lb/ft tq is 267. Mated to a 10 speed Honda built transmission. Also, you left out some noteworthy features on your tester. Heads up display, 16 speaker 3D ELS Sound. 16 way power seats, standard panaroof, and standard remote car starter.
This guy still has not figured out the true touch pad 🙄 it's not a mouse pad it uses 1-1 positioning with the screen if you want to touch the top left corner of the screen you touch the top left corner of the touchpad...
Minor downside to the MDX - no door cup holders in the rear and no third row vent. Agree the the headrest juts forward a bit too much. The only remedy I found was to push the lumbar of the seat forward
The change of the car in the display when in adaptive CC could be due to visual contrast while driving. Pretty important while driving to not struggle to find elements on screen. Just a hunch though...
The walkaway liftback closure feature truly is a genius feature. I'm not aware of any other brand that offers it. Sounds silly, but it really is a great feature. And I love the pop-up USB outlets, too.
Acura only needed that feature to close the hatch, not the other button that's actually on the hatch. Also, they should've added a way to lock the vehicle after you push the button to close the hatch when you walk away.
Tommy Acura’s touch pad is super easy to use it called true touch i believe, you’re not supposed to swipe unless you’re switching screens. When using the pad you touch the area on the pad where it would be on the screen that’s how it works
You are using the touchpad incorrectly. It’s not like a mouse or a pointer. It’s called True Touch and the touch pad is mapped exactly like the screen. If you want to touch the icon on the top right for example, that’s where you touch on the touchpad. If you want to touch the icon on the bottom center, you touch that same exact position on the touchpad. Works great. It is the same setup on my 2019 Acura RDX.
You're right, except that doesn't work in Android Auto (e.g. Google Maps, Waze, Spotify, etc.). It's only true in the Acura menu. I haven't tried Apple Carplay.
Acura needs to improve! With no "recommended" status on the current MDX and brand newly redesigned RDX from Consumer Reports, the Buick Enclave has been ruling the 3-row luxury segment in their rankings.
@@normt430mdx sold about 10,000 units more than the buick enclave in 2020 in the US and did you see the buick lacrosse 2021 seems like the design came from somehwhere.
The 2016+ Honda Pilots have that same removable cargo floor trick. You can also insert the piece at the bottom of the compartment instead of flush mounted to gain cargo height.
The first gen CRV had a rear tray that came out and had flip down legs to double as a table. I used it all the time. You gotta admire those Honda engineers.
@@mct8888, I actually cross-shopped the XC90 (against my MDX Advance) but there were too many option packages to get the things I wanted, making it harder to find.
I don’t know why every manufacturer thinks they have to reinvent the wheel with infotainment systems, if they just took the infotainment from the new accord and put a nicer looking skin on it like Lincoln does it would be perfect
I really miss my old MDX (stolen/totaled) but I must point out that my 08 base model highlander can ditch the center seat in the second row as well; there is a hatch under the center console to tuck it into and a cup holder / storage bin that takes its place
I love how you can remove the middle seat, that's smart. But the reversible cargo platform has been done by Ford. Plus you can drop it in to the cubby.
That center screen control seems like pain in the ass and i know it will take time to get used to the push button drive and reverse modes. Other than that it looks sharp. Hoping the car maintains the quality we expect from Honda/Acura...
Great video as always, but I will say as far as the true touch pad goes, it doesn’t need a cursor if you understand how it works. Wherever your finger is on the pad, is where it’ll be selected on the same area of the screen above.
I'm looking forward to a Tommy/Blaze vlog series just documenting their daily hikes and adventures or at least, a blaze insta account. Get on this Tommy!
Great review, keep it up! Wish Acura would rethink what is included in each trim level. Imagine a tech package that doesn't include third row USB ports or a standard 120v outlet. One you splurge for the top of the line, you find yourself asking why you are not considering going with one of the better competitors at that price point. Stuff other cars have for ~15K less.
The reason you having trouble with the touchpad because you using it as a touchpad instead as Acura tells you it is one to one touchpad. So that means if you touch the right corner then the right corner lights up.
It's phantom violet "pearl", not "purple". The touchpad isn't hard to use at all... you place your finger down and the screen highlights the option you're on.. so it does tell you where you're selecting. This system isn't hard to figure out, it's actually really easy to use.
Good overview, Tommy! Interesting that Honda's luxury brand is now being styled after Mazda, at least at the front. Says something about the latest Mazda design cues. ;-)
Track pad is absolute touch... the position you touch in touch pad is the same as the screen. So you always know where to touch. Put your most important apps in the 4 corners and just touch the pad corner like it is a button. No need to scroll or see.
Im getting rid of my 2004 Accura with more than 310k and still plenty of life in it!!! Beautiful car that my kids enjoyed. Am getting the same car, new model. Well worth 🎉🎉
The infotament its very easy to use and you do not need a cursor because its true tach its not mouse pad basicaly when ever you tach on the pad ypi are teching on the srean
Great video. Very informative. Bonus - having the dog, Blaze. As a dog owner I am always concious of how will my dog fit/travel in the vehicle. Our Golden (70lb) will fit nicely in the MDX. The MDX wasnt even on my radar until I saw this review. Thanks!
Someone has never used the True Touchpad on a recent Acura and it shows in this video. The pad is soooooooo much easier to use than a traditional "touchpad"
The cutest doggy ever.. Also this interior is clearly the Acura version of the audi Q7, from the digital instrument panel to the infotainment position and trackpad, all the way down to the accent lighting which was not demoed in this video (would have been hard to see anyway). I actually love this and it would still cost a fraction of the Q7 prestige package. Sadly I couldn't really afford the 2022 Acura mdx new, but I can afford the pre-owned Q7 prestige. I would have to wait a year or two to get this pre-owned. By that time I will have my eyes set on something electric or hybrid. Acura will need to be able to keep up in this respect.
I mentioned in another thread something similar. The new MDX is very chintzy for a 2022. Look at what everyone else is doing. This car is several years too late.
Acura calls it a "True touchpad" and it does have a curser when the curser is required like when you are typing an address etc, I am by no means a tech savvy person and it took me less than a day to get used to that touchpad, I actually prefer it over a touch screen. BTW, the wireless phone charger on 22 MDX does not work with iPhone 12 and up. Acura is aware of this issue and hopefully will come out with a fix.
@@marcusmanchester7095 what are you doing watching a car channel? You obviously have no taste in cars. But I guess a good excuse to watch it would be if you’re finally selling quite possible the ugliest piece of machinery ever built for something decent. May I suggest, oh any other car in existence?
Why can’t Acura/Honda lose the piano black plastics!! Looks terrible once it’s used daily and gets scratches. We had a pilot and couldn’t stand all the glossy black.
I didn't catch if he said what trim level this test vehicle is -- anyone catch it? To me, it looks great inside and out. That said, Tommy's 100% right about Acura's infotainment having a steep learning curve, the german competitors are much more intuitive to use.
Thank you for your awesome review of the MDX. Thank you also for introducing me to the Bernese Mounting Dog breed. I didn't know of that breed until seeing Blaze and hearing you mention his breed type. Beautiful animal.
My WK had a liner that flipped, but the plastic side had a sort of tray built in. It was very handy for hauling things like car batteries and dirty tow straps. I wish every car had an option to flip the rear floor panel.
Where I live in Alabama we have Gulf beaches to Appalachian mountains and the joy of driving unlike Kansas or other really flat areas is now being experienced by me, with the new MDX 2022 model and it (after driving every luxury SUV) killed the competition. The German X5 was the closest to driving potential, like the big six with out turbos and it, the MDX does very well combined with that new ten speed transition. So smooth! Thousands less than the German models and much more room. I most likely will buy my wife the RDX soon! Thought I would buy a plug-in hybrid, or for that matter, maybe a hybrid, but our new Green New Deal direction has not convinced me that wind and/or solar will ever get the job done for total EV generation, at least not for many years, if at all. I only have ten years of college, and eight best selling books, but call me stupid as I have many friends sitting on the side of the road wondering via their driver anxiety can I find a level 2 charger in my $145,000 Porsche, as I see my computer says we will run out of EV in 25 miles, holly shit! So, this is just perfect and after my warranty runs out I will look again where EV's are and adjust to our country's new direction and maybe do this every three years or 36.000 miles. Fun times ahead! Check out the totally redone inside and out 2022 MDX Acura, it will impress and note Acura sales are off the charts, so that says it all, people know quality. Same with the RDX, just a little smaller for the little wife.
What a huge improvement over the 2020 model. I do wish at least on the Advance trim, the exterior cladding was body painted and not flat black. I'm also surprised A/C is still not included in the 3rd row, it gets really hot back there & takes forever to cool down in Florida summers, even with 2nd row air on high. These are a couple things the new GV80 offers, but each has their own strengths. Regardless, this new MDX is going to sell very very well, especially with expanded cargo space as a highlight. My GSP will take Blaze's word for pup comfort🙂 Great review!
Thats a good looking MDX, I feel Acura’s are slowly getting not ugly. Hate the track pad though. Do all Acuras still recommend 91 octane? How old is Blaze?
Some angles on the exterior design looked similar to the CX-9...definitely better design than the old MDX and not too polarizing (which is good as it will age well)!
Tommy, Nice review, In that upcoming driving reviews, We would like to see comparisons of the new MDX to the new GV80. Those 2 will be fighting for the same market share.
