You're assuming that humanity will still be the same in the 24th century as it is NOW. That was the great thing about Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future that was rejected by Rick Berman (and now JJ Abrams) - the idea that humans will EVOLVE into better people by then. It's basically about giving people HOPE for the future, not dwelling in a stagnant cesspool of all of humanity's WORST traits.
@ChicaWolverina dark side. That is why DS9 is one of the best. Voyager was another good one because it to showed the darkside of Humanity. Take the Equinox science ship and her crew. Sure Starfleet claims to be all humane and loving but look what happens when a starfleet crew gets stranded thousands of lightyears from home, they start to do anything, including murdering a species just to get home. Even Captain Janeway made choices like that. Honestly that shows more reality that TNG ever could.
Your wrong, no matter how far we go Humans and all alien life will have a darkside. Now i am not saying we need to show wars and violence in every Star Trek series. I am saying we need to admit to ourselves that we will always be fighting with our inner darkness. I agree with you about Gene message, I long for the day when we Humans will see each other not as Americans, Chinese, or Arab, but rather as Terrans. But I also realize that when that happens, we still will always have demons to fight.
