The creators literally said that they made Penguin female because Batman's rogue gallery lacks interesting female characters. Yup. The people entrusted with a Batman show accused BATMAN of all characters of having no good female villains. Do they even know Batman???
Why penguin?? in Arkham games they turned copperhead into a female... and that's my favorite take on copperhead ever! when changing something you don't have to change an established character, why don't change poison ivy to a. Man then?? Its dumb. They changed copperhead and becuz they didn't have any agenda that was great.. Thats what im saying.. They could've used that same character..
I had a girl friend recently on Twitter ask why they couldn't just make an original character like how the 90s series made Harley Quin and the Phantasm. The funniest fucking thing I seen in a while, one of the show runners vaguely implied she was being "sexist" and it quickly became an inside joke between my friends.
Your friend has a point there but honestly I really don't mind them changing the Penguin to a woman cause the character was kind of interesting And honestly people really shouldn't be Getting that mad over this
@@kingj9664 I don't think people were "mad" more so they're just annoyed because they know what the intention is. It's to appear like they're being inclusive when you're doing the opposite by gender swapping characters instead of using pre-existing characters who are female or making their own like the examples my friend gave from the 90s series.

In “The Batman” 2004 or 2007 that show featured a female cop who was a leading role and has one of the best female writing I’ve ever seen, her character is well fleshed out and she didn’t have to be woke, she didn’t have to be lesbian, she didn’t need other people to say how smart she was, and every male character wasn’t some sleeze ball to make her look good her name was elen Yen, I think but I know she was a very well written character and well designed too
Bit of a shame Batgirl kind of replaced her. Pretty sure Yen never appeared after the second season. I think she is mentioned becoming commissioner at some point. But she's largely forgotten, once Barbara comes into the picture.
Duuude, I was super looking forward to seeing the potential romance/ partnership she would have with Batman and Bruce Wayne. It was almost like they gave batman his own Lois Lane. Then they just erased her...
Renee Montoya was a character in the original show, she was just kind of a beat cop though. She showed up every once in a while but not often, she's kinda bullock's partner but not really.
@@NarcolepziThing is. Renée Montoya also worked up to detective from a beat cop. It was after the episode POV when it happened. That's the episode where Bullock, another beat cop, and Montoya were questioned by Internal Affairs about a bust gone wrong and they had to save Batman from his predicament.

the animated series had a very distinct art direction that combined incredibly expressive backgrounds drawn on black paper and fluid cel animation. it drew inspiration from german expressionism and the superman fleischer cartoon, which together both gave that version of gotham a very unique look and feel. i think this show just lacks a clear direction, and can't seem to decide between being an animated series clone or a grounded film noir, giving it this confusing aesthetic that isn't appealing, pretty, or fluid. tldr it looks like shit because i think no one knew what they wanted to do going into this, whereas the animated series had a clear vision and stuck to it

Batman used guns for less then a year after his creation and after that the writers immediately made him stop using guns. Stop defending batman holding guns in "the comics" because you definitely haven't read any of them
Just a quick note, Montoya isn't new- in the OG series she's Harvey Bullock's partner. Originally their dynamic is that Montoya is an active supporter of Batman, while bullock is portrayed more as a somewhat corrupt cop and sees batman more of a menace vigilantee
Yeah I figured this out afterwards, it’s been a while since I’ve seen the entire animated series start to finish… but I appreciate the correction. Doesn’t change my thoughts on the character though
@@TheeOK1 not really like corrupt but he was the type of cop that broke the rules did shady stuff to get the job done. Commiting crime? No but he'd DEFINATELY be the type of guy who planted evidence to land an arrest
I think its funny because the penguin is one of the batman villains that shows how being treated poorly because of your appearance can hurt a people, on the original animated series the episode penguin starts trying to be a good person but everyone treats him poorly because of his appearance is soul crushing. A message woke people try to pass forward, and I think boomers would eat it because of how sympathetic it can be.
In a word, almost. The writing is really bad and the fact is Batman gets less screen time than the supporting cast. The voice acting is way below what we are accustomed to and they mangle the characters thoroughly. On the plus side the animation was decent and JJ was involved.... ugh, I change my word. YES, it's that bad.
The animation was honestly pretty badd at times. The worse scene is when penguin is trying to blow to police department. The animation for them escaping was immediately noticeable for me and made me replay and pause. The action sequences is where the animation is genuinely good if not passable, like the clayface fight. But the inbetween scenes can be so stiff and lack any real movement.
i didn't have a problem with him coming back cuz the dude literally had a clone army, like the biggest threat of all time wouldn't have a backup plan 😂
Well, true OG Batman actually use guns pretty regularly in his first few Batman only carried a gun . He killed people on a regular basis. And Batman is not really afraid to use guns. He just doesn’t want to kill anybody with one or use one against individual person.

Like the changes to The Penguin and making NOT Harley Quinn who has the same name as Harleen Quinzel's alter ego when she is WITH THE Joker. And why did they make Alfred Pennyworth, THE British Special Intelligence member, a clumsy fat man who is made fun of by everyone? Why are there so many things wrong with this show? And why is Jar Jar Abrams at BAD REBOOT on this probei? Why is Bruce Timm not working with Paul Dini and others who worked on the DCAU shows back in the day? This show stands as the perfect example of what happens when writers and creators lack nuance and aren't made to operate around certain restrictions. Bruce Timm has the creativity, but he's always needed others to hold him back from going over the top, people like Paul Dini and back in the 90s broadcast and standards. Timm doesn't have the nuance to keep things held back, even several times in past interviews expressing his frustration in not being able to make the characters exactly how he wanted, which ultimately ended up being a good thing. Paul Dini deserves way more credit in making BTAS as good as not was, but Bruce Timm gets all the credit.
@@MrOrcshaman FYI this is also the same Bruce Timm that made Batman have that infamous scene with Barbara in the Killing Joke. This show isn't even the first disaster he has had with Batman when Paul Dini wasn't in the writer's booth.

Yep. Even then, Bruce time apparently had different designs in mind before trying to keep the art relatively comic book accurate. Mans has nothing but art to his name, seems like the inverse of Butch Hartman, not that JJ Abrams helped any.
Frankly.... I find this show more mediocre than anything. They didn't want to just stick to Golden Age Batman, just stole some of the aesthetics & delivered a bland elseworld. It's a shame because Golden Age Batman could have given a familar yet new experience !
exactly. well said. They could've used the Mad Monk, Cavalier (he's kinda lame but any character can work with good writing) and some other great golden age characters. They used catwoman but I want to see her ORIGINAL design, that's my favorite. Look it up.
I'll say that I agree with you on a number of points, but you're wrong about Clayface. The reason that this Clayface is so divorced from the BTAS Clayface is because they're different comic book characters. That is actually a very faithful adaptation of the original Basil Karlo Clayface.
In case you were wondering, the reason why Alfred is a clumsy fat man is because that's how he was in the comics. He used to be fat, and clumsy, but then there was a story where to went to resort on vacation, and spent his time there working out, and returned skinny and clumsy. Alfred was intended to be a comic relief character, who often bumbled his way into trouble, and would get out of it normally through dumb luck. For a look at the original version of Alfred who inspired this show's version, check out Batman issue 10. The reason why made him skinny is because the Batman characters were adapted into a film serial, and they got a skinny man to play Alfred there, and they wanted to make the comic Alfred match what was going on in the big screen. Neat, eh?
Not quite exactly. Yes. Alfred was first introduced in Batman #16 (April *1944*), by writer Don Cameron and artist Bob Kane, in which he had an overweight and clean-shaven appearance. However, he was originally created by writers Victor McLeod, Leslie Swabacker, and Harry Fraserof for the Batman (*1943*) serial, in which he was played by English character actor William Austin. The comic's story was published prior to the serial's release, regardless, DC editors wanted the comic Alfred to resemble his cinematic counterpart, so in Detective Comics #83 (January 1944), Alfred vacationed at a health resort, where he slimmed down and grew a mustache.
I had my hopes up with Bruce Timm involved. Then I heard JJ Abrams. My expectations went down the drain. That's what now? 3 franchises he destroyed? Jesus christ this series is so ass. No wonder they couldn't put this on TV, it's horrible. First fucking Batman series in over a DECADE and this is what we get. I'm good watching the Batman 2004 and BTAS. Screw this entire show.
If this was a batgirl-centric series where the concept is batman beyond the detective female goes ask people in the daytime and at night the detective becomes a batgirl, and so on.
This reminds of cartoons from the early 2000s and they took classic characters and tried to make them hip like that Looney tunes show where they had iron man suits. I feels that same kind of low quality
@@rainingtacos7529 the Harley Quinn show is too feminist for me, but no I do not recommend you watch the Batman show either if you’re a long time fan of the Batman animated series.
Love how they attack men for liking women and they can never have men help. Yet they have women needing other women and lusting after other women. Sick of the double standard. These people are supposedly are against this type of behavior and consistently do it again and again.
All this series did was show me that people forgot that all the worst things from BTAS were what Bruce Timm championed and all the good stuff from the show had little do with him Never forget that Bruce Timm is the one that has a hard on for the Bruce/Barbara relationship, and had her get pregnant with Bruce's kid while she was dating Dick Grayson in the BTAS canon (it was in the canon follow up comics) Either Bruce Timm really wants to bang one of his co-workers' daughter or it's a fetish he has, cause he's obsessed with it BTAS should be remembered as a staple of the character's history, but Bruce Timm should not be given any type of creative control This is the 3rd time people have made that mistake, maybe this time they'll learn from it Also, quick edit that I forgot to mention, Renee Montoya isn't new to this series and is unironically a pretty solid character within the comics
21:34 You overlooked the fact that Catwoman was cuffed to a table leg with a clay pot on it. She could have knocked the table over and escaped at any time.
I enjoyed the Gentleman Ghost, Clayface, carnival and Onomatopoeia episodes. But the quality isn’t consistent between each show. The Penguin change was utterly pointless, as was making Harley Quinn some Mad Hatter/Hugo Strange knockoff that brainwashes her billionaire clients out of some vague disdain for capitalism. Also, she’s Hawaiian and obese for some reason. But the worst, by far, is how Two-Face was handled. Harvey Dent is played as a one-dimensional misogynist for most of the show, until the last few episodes where he suddenly becomes the “White Knight” for a scant few seconds until he is disfigured by a mobster IN THE BATHROOM. Yeah, that’s right. Harvey’s tragic disfigurement doesn’t even happen when Batman is around. Dude gets his face melted by a goon on the john. And don’t even get me started on how terrible his appearance is in contrast to BTAS, TDK or even that Gotham Knights show that flopped.
The Long Halloween movie handled it the best imo, in that movie he is manipulated into going crazy, he already had his tick with the coin but being framed for murder and disfigured pushed him over the edge. I agree Harvey deserved better there's no tragedy for him in this show, he's Two-Face for a few days gets arrested and then dies. As for Harley Quinn making her Bruce's psychologist was fine, making her date another woman is fine, making her work with the police is fine, but making her Harley Quinn without the Joker is stupid, her tragedy is the abusive relationship she has with him. Female Penguin is ok, it's pointless but it works This show is so far OK, and I think it can get better if they improve their writing and actually let these actors do their lines in the same room.
@@miguelzurita3216 About Harvey's tragedy, "Eye Of the Beholder" was the first iteration to do it in more details and it was fine, very good Two-Face comic but kinda rushed on the Dent side. The way THIS show handles it though ? Trash...
I think my main problem is that it’s not enough to stand out from previous Batman shows. I think what you don’t understand is this is an adaptation of 20-40s comics, if course there are a few modern changes because 20-40s media is very dated, but most of the modern characters were established in the 80s and 90s. Mr freeze and clayface especially were way different before the animated series
@OfficialCJSoprano oh yeah definitely its one of the 6 episodes thats just barbara or renee being boring for 18 minutes and batman showing up for a mid fight at the end
As a person that finds the show descent I can say the concept is cool and I like that Batman is more of a detective than anything else so yea it it’s mid but it can be better.
I liked certain aspects of the show like how they portrayed batman himself as well as some of the episodes and bullock and his partner were funny villains
I'd like to point out that it's common for voice actors to record their lines seperately when working on animation, anime and cartoons. Recording alone in a booth is typically how it goes. Not all voice actors know each other, nor are they expected to. Press conferences and conventions tend to be how and when they first meet, unless they're regular employees at voice-acting guilds or English dubbing companies. Yes, the voice acting is a downgrade, but recording their lines separately doesn't have anything to do with that.
@@AidenS-f5z Its quality is debatable, considering it's actually the actor and the director's job to both get the best and most appropriate lines for each scene, but you're missing the point. Solo recordings are more common across the industry. It's not the issue here. The entire show isn't gonna get fixed by putting two people in a booth every time they need to get some lines.
The very first time I heard batman's voice in this show, I thought to myself "Omg, will I be the only one who's gonna hate all this?"...turns out, I am not. Something told me this show is gonna be ass...glad to know someone else thinks that.

Well there should have been a call to the firefighters instead of the police force, but no. If 50 kids had died and the police stood idly by… there would be an out roar by citizens if that happened in real life. Yea but all that was changed he been set in stone for decades now they shouldn’t have changed what was know and if they wanted to pay homage to the old comics they could have done it better like Bruce had 2 butlers or something and decides to get rid of one or they have a family emergency and then you can show it’s old school Alfred from the comics. To just have newer thinner Alfred come up escorting the old one out obviously he wouldn’t be named Alfred they can call him jeeves or something
I agree with a lot of the criticism especially with the lesbians that don't need no man being the main characters but I think the actor who played Batman did good and he was easily the best part of the show (the only good thing of the show). The problem with that is that he barely got any airtime...Bad writing is the biggest reason this show sucked despite the good depiction of the Batman character..
The reason that we have Batman animated series is because the popularity of Tim Burton Batman I could sum up this show in one word “inferior“ Bruce Tim gets too much credit. He’s just the guy who came up with a cool designs he’s not that good of a writer The guy that actually was the soul of the original Batman the animated series was Paul Dini. He’s the guy who came up with reworking most of the villains that are iconic to this day like Mr. freeze. And JJ Abrams is not someone you look to and think quality His whole gimmick is “mystery boxes” And he can’t really create anything original he usually repurpose things badly And the guy who did the Batman movie I don’t see anything in the show that looks like it’s from him The thing they did with nocturna is really weird. They gave her the poison ivy treatment from the suicide squad game. They took a sexy femme fetal vampire character and turned her into a child and gave her weird undertones. Like look up the character She is dark and beautiful and alluring. Yeah, also the animation is lazy and it sucks They say this is the show they wanted to make and there’s 90s, but I don’t believe them. The only thing I’ll say is good about the show is the intro and the theme song.
I am actually fine with Batman using guns in this context. That's actually in line with what the show promoted itself, as an adaptation of the original Batman in Detective comics, when he actually used guns before a lot of his lore was fleshed out further.

Montoya, the lady cop isn't a new character, she just wasn't overused before. She was in the original cartoon as well and they managed to make her competent and likeable without stealing the show from the titular character.
From what I've seen I was kind of let down by the show though I am interested in what future seasons will do. First seasons are typically the roughest. I think what I am let down by is that the show was marketed as Batman in the 1940s. I love vintage comic books from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. It's very clear that the creatives behind it know their Golden Age Batman. Alfred being fat, rather than the typical skinny Alfred everyone is familiar with, actually is how Alfred first appeared. The first couple years Alfred was around the comics he was a fat, bumbling butler used more as comic relief. He also was never a father figure to Batman. I like the call back to Alfred's original look and like that they kept the father figure aspect though I was kind of interested in seeing a Alfred that wasn't a father figure to Batman. I liked Clayface. It was a call back to how Clayface originally appeared in the comics. I was excited to see a Clayface being taken more in the original actor getting revenge route. I do like the Clayface from BTAS way more though that Clayface is hard to top. That Clayface was more of an amalgamation of three different Clayface's: The actor angle was taken from the original Basil Karlo, shape shifting came from Matt Hagan, and his skin condition was taken from Preston Payne. I love how Catwoman had her classic purple costume and I hope the orphan kid that is clearly meant to be Dick Grayson (the red sweater and green pants was his civilian outfit in the 1940 comics) comes back to be Robin. Deadshot's design was actually inspired by Deadshot's first appearance. Batman using a gun was also a reference to his first few appearances. He would actually use it to kill though. There was a lot of unnecessary changes though. Harley Quinn is the most major one. I am really tired of constantly taking her away from the Joker and, in this case, scrubbing away her history with the Joker. It takes away Harley's depth as a character and an essential part of her character. It'd be like taking away the death of Batman's parents or taking away Krypton from Superman. I'm happy at least it wasn't the Harley we've been bombarded with post-New 52. Harley has been Harley basically in name only since the New 52 started though. Harvey Dent being a jerk before becoming Two-Face was a stupid change that took depth away from him. I actually kinda liked Penguin as a woman though still disappointed by the change. Since a big part of this show was to have more a 1940s feel to it, I was hoping for more goofy looking, penguin looking Penguin. I don't know I'm mixed about the show. I was excited to see the classic Golden Age designs though disappointed that with characters like the Penguin and Two-Face they decided to deviate. And often they just killed off villains.
This was really informative, I appreciate the comment! Something I forgot to add in the video was the lack of use for 1940s Gotham. The only thing that really alludes to the time period is the old TVs that they sometimes show… other than that, it might as well be set in modern day. I hope they utilize that more later on. But Im definitely not dismissing the show entirely, I am excited to see what they do from here
@@Narcolepzi No problem! There are some good websites out there that house scans of old vintage comics. I recommend reading a lot of the stuff from the 40's. Once Robin is introduced Joker, Catwoman, Clayface, Scarecrow, Penguin, and Two-Face all start popping up and the Batman comics really start getting on a roll. Don't feel like you need to read them in order or anything though. They are self contained. I agree with not feeling the 40s. BTAS felt more like the 40s. I wonder if the animation wasn't digital, but cell painted like the original one would make a different. That new TV animation gloss always takes me out of it. I started rewatching. Yes and no, in BTAS he only spoke like Batman when he had the mask on. He never forced his voice to be dark and gargly as Bruce Wayne when it's just him and Alfred. The new show made him look mentally disturbed
@@Narcolepzidude this version of Bruce was obviously affected differently because most Batmen don’t burst into their Alfred room that night and say “They all have to pay” the way he did and that’s fucking rad. Y’all see something interesting like Batman actually being seen as crazy which he is in many points in the comics
@@NarcolepziOk maybe it’s been a minute since you actually watched the show, but there are SEVERAL scenes in BTAS where he does the exact thing you just described.
