The new BMW 5 Series is an absolute tech-fest, there is so much on offer! Let's explore and test out features like the ability to park the car from the key and the new Connected mobile app.
I test drove a new 520D last weekend (It's all they had available) and what an amazing car. It was on run flats though and tyre roar was almost as bad as my E91 3 series on its run flats. Other than that I'd be completely nitpicking to fault the car.
The new G30 Generation BMW 530d which is featured in this video has an updated version of BMW's 3 litre inline 6zyl. It has 4 valves (per zyl.) though ;) www.bmw.com/com/en/newvehicles/5series/sedan/2016/showroom/technical_data.html#m=530d
I used to do that too and dream about owning some cars until one day I had the money to buy whatever car I want. Make it a target, dream about it and you will get it sooner than you think!
Hi Shmee, nice to see the parking mode function. I really appreciate your detailed review of the new 5 series, as most people do not study what they are reviewing properly. I look forward to watching more of your reviews.
John Dessire Ok. I wouldnt say he hates it but he definetly does no like it, and is showing that to the world. Farshad is really annoying you gotta agree.
This guy is geting closer to the first place on the creep list of so called reviewers ... If he crosses his hands while driving more often he might get on the top very soon ...
With it being only a second behind the m5 (with probably 1/4 of the running costs) im guessing 99 percent of people will be interested in the performance. I certainly would. Do they not do a 2 litre for people not interested in performance?
Tim, I'm mostly surprised as to how easely you go from right hand side roads/cars to the opposite and has no difficulty adapting! Kudos for that, I'd be mind-boggled by all these changes.
Cameron Denis This car for example, most people who buy it new will love it. The second owner who buys it pre owned after warranty will most likely grow to hate this car when everything goes wrong, specifically the smartphone styled key and everything it does. When that thing fails (which it will) you're fucked
Grant Schneider thats my fear for those geeky cars. For example the S class, you buy a car for ~180k. But as they stop in 4 years the update support or even only bring the new looking software just for the new models (2019 for example) then the loss of value will be immersive. Same counts for this 5er, Tesla, Audi A5 etc
Because people often experience problems with reliability and it's not acceptable for cars with such a big price... It's full of high tech sexy features, great stuff and it has an awesome engine, but because it's so complex there are a lot of things that can fail.
Definitely a better looking 5 series outside and inside than the previous generation and the tech is on another level! BMW 5 series will always be one of my favourite sedans. Imagine what the next M5 will be like...
I can't forgive BMW to make pedestrian accident prevention and the autonomous breaking an extra option. What are they thinking, "we have a technology that will stop this car running a school kid over, let's not make it standard and charge extra" I can understand charging extra for bigger satnav or special keys but technology that will prevent an accident should never ever be an option!!
That is nonsense. By that thinking, if a safety technology is available, all new cars at all price points should be forced to offer it in the base version instantly. This would obviously increase the prices of the base versions, even by a very high % of their base price for lower end cars. If a safety feature is absolutely important it can be made mandatory after a while, like seatbelts, airbags, ESC, etc. But the latest stuff will always cost extra and not be available in cheaper cars from the beginning. In 10 years, pedestrian accident prevention will probably be mandatory (and self driving cars already a reality).
Do you not remember Captain Greencross? or even Alvin Stardust 'kids you must be out of your tiny minds' - road safety is everyone's responsibility not just car manufacturers
Gorgeous car. Actually quite enjoyed the review and liked the guys presenting style. First impressions weren't favourable but I'm happy to be proved wrong. Will watch more.
I really hate that so many car companies are making their infotainment systems look like a tablet that's been glued to the dash as an afterthought. It looks terrible imo. I'd much rather them integrate it into the dash in a more thoughtful way.
Being both a BMW and Tesla owner, I am excited for all these new features BMW added to the 5-series. I can't wait to replace my 4-series Grancoupe with it, but it doesn't really amaze me as much being the Tesla can do the whole "self-parking" thing a lot quicker and more conveniently. I really hope that BMW will at least work on making it a lot quicker, the whole "connecting to the car" thing makes it too slow for me whereas in my Tesla I don't even need a key to have it autopark itself. The BMW app is also too slow compared to the Tesla app (which I can literally use as a key for my Tesla). In fact, the BMW App just started kind of working for me, it still crashes A LOT and takes forever to "send" the control to the car, not to mention the having to call BMW to unlock the car. I guess, in BMW standards, this car is definitely a "Tech Fest," but the real Tech fest is Tesla. I am not hating on BMW, I love BMW, but simply stating that these new features simply doesn't excite me as much. The gesture control, however, is pretty impressive.
Yeah i know. You can,t please everyone. Im not complaining or anything. Just nice to see a classic shmee style review. Popular content is always changing on RU-vid. Thanks for the reply Tim. Cheers.
@Shmee, the reason the car is so quiet as you have pointed many times, its as it have optional double glazing. It was also available on previous 5-series.
That could be done through magnets maybe. But both cards have to have it in almost all side panels in a big quantity so that it works. That would make the cars pretty heavy. Other option would be laser sensor with a door breaking system in the doors or something.
But what if it malfunctions and you can't open the door at all. Although for accidents you are supposed to get out through the windows anyways. I think it could be done easily with all the technology we have. It surely can't weigh more than 5 - 10 kgs.
Just found this fella, and I´m obviously a bit late looking at the views and subs. But this reviewer is perfect. Not too much of anything, not annyoing, doesnt shout doesn´t do this or that which is normal to "stick out". Just seems like a good dude that loves cars and does good reviews. Nice.
Your car is 10 years old which is why they haven't failed. It's simple and easy. A car made in 2017 is mind boggingly complex and trying to be 20 different things and be a car at the same time. Every sensor talks to one another and if one fails 80% of the others go haywire.
that 360 view with camera control is probably the coolest feature I've seen in a while! Def. makes me want to save up for this car even just based on that!
The099az e46 was 1998 to 2006. This is a 2017. Alot has changed in 10+ years. I bet your car doesn't park and drive itself and have all sorts of electronic shit like the ability to view a 3d rendering from above. (stuff that a driver's car doesn't need)
I love my car and all old Bimmers, they just look better and are overall a better BMW. I would never buy a brand new BMW because the depreciation costs are insane! Mercedes are better overall cars. and i prefer a W213 over the G30 any day...
Big ups for the flume remix in the car while demonstrating the volume gesture control. Thumbs up just for that, though the car (and video) deserves it regardless.
I like you, you tell it like it is no bull, that’s what us buyers need, not someone painting over the cracks and wanting to get the paperwork done the min we walk through the door lol thank you.for sharing your knowledge.👍🏻
You can but an empty 530i without all these extra features. It will cost much less and you'll get a great comfortable car. I know a lot of ppl who buy 520d because they don't need all this stuff.
Wouter0007 my dad was going to do the same, he currently has an 320i. but he really wants an SUV so he's going with the Mercedes GLC coupe 350e as the X4 is an old platform and no hybrid version.
that key is stupid so stupid and useless its big laggy need to charge wth why i charge a key ! all that futures can be on a phone app ! i see a gimmicks also and i see E class is better to me
BMW have also had the phone app for several years if you must control things using your phone. The key (and the phone) charge in the wireless charging tray that is standard on all new 5 series. By all means choose the E class if you prefer - it is a decent car.
Oh come on - that is Apple's problem, not the car manufacturers. There are plenty of USB sockets in modern cars for the old iPhone technology. Get a grip!
bmw wants to appeal as many people as possible, just like VW thats why they may look kinda boring and they change very little throughout the generations. volvo v90 on the other hand is one of the ugliest cars ever made in my opinion and easily the ugliest car of 2016. its very polarizing just like for example citroen. i know some people who love it but i also know some who would not even take if for free.
Tim that's it then, the new M5 it is for you, I think you'll love it. Just for the record, I like that you were polite to the sat nav, you're a class act! cheers
Every time I am so suprised to see an American or a british to speak so fast and smooth without having to pause and think what to say. İt is admiring. Is it because of the nature of the language, is it the culture or people read so much
They don't come with wireless chargers, no reverse cameras, no electric seats or hand gestures. In fact, the basic car is too sub standard. You need to add at least £3000 to get a 5th of most of the techs described here. Head on display is £895, parking plus is £1450, display key is £195, wireless charger is £475, electric seat is £700, 18 inch tyre is £895, and some packages are more than £3000. Despite this, once you drive this car, you will definitely buy it.
Shmee started doing half a mil views in < 10 days. I remember the first time I saw the videos, wasn't the beginning, but early on, as the vids were reaching a 100K after many days
Wow I'm impressed, I have an old E92 335i and I couldn't personally see a reason to upgrade. The newer tech was kinda cool but nothing that would make me want to drop 60k on a new car but maybe I need a 5 series xdrive for winter.
seems really cool. only thing I'm not a fan of is the horizontal led daytime running light bar or whatever that is. It's too similar to the DRLs on Benzes
