Next March my lovely BMW R1250GS will be 3 years old, so do I swap it for something new or keep it? Currently I am considering the Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally or Pikes Peak, the BMW M1000XR, the BMW R1300GS, M1300GS, R1400GS! and the big BMW K1600GT. So here we are with the first test ride, the Ducati, and boy oh boy is it fast....

30mph and in 4th or 5th gear …….. NO WONDER it feels lumpy and protests !! Having come from a GSA to a Rally, I find the Multi a much more exciting and engaging. I was finding the GSA a little mundane. To be fair - I have had three GS’s so perhaps it was just time for a change. I’ve had a ride on the GS1300 and it’s a vast improvement on the previous versions. But, for me …… I would take the Multi every time. Enjoyed the video …. Keep them coming

Thank you for commenting David, it's interesting how different people find different bikes; that's why it is so important to test ride and not rely on the likes of Fen Tour! hehe

Exactly the same happens to me,, sold my gsa to this beast and i can confirm the same it will destroy the gsa big time for me.

Dude, you need to shift down. 5th gear in town ?? no wonder the rally protests, almost stalling the engine… I can assure you that the V4 is SUPER smooth if you ride it properly. Keep up the revs and she ‘ll thank you for it. Rally V4 owner.

Indeed one had to rev the engine for it to be smooth and very quick once over 5k. I was so tempted for a Pikes Peak but alas sticking with BMW.

Lovely bike . Defo need to be in a lower gear. It’s a v4 with 13k revs. Extremely smooth. You need to be 5k per gear minimum. At 30mph you’d only need 2nd gear if even. Buttery smooth then 👍 it’s perfectly happy going slowly but in the right gear. You’d not drive your car in 6th gear at 20mph, why the bike?

Poor bike 😢 This is NOT a BMW, it’s a DUCATI. You need at least 3000 rpm! It’s not a tractor, it’s a sports bike.

Indeed, that's why I never ordered a Pikes Peak and ordered an M1000XR instead.

Had the gsa 1250 2021 jumped to v4 rally forbthe last 6 months,, and i can say it will destroy the gsa in every angle, but it has less fuel efficiency with all respect to ur review.

Was far more exciting to ride than the GS1250, but… GS is rather different, more “pipe and slippers”

Just got this bike, big and heavy parked, light and very fast when moving. Getting around 42 mpg and motor is still breaking in, 8 gallon tank is most welcome. Side bags and frame weigh 40 lbs but come off easy if you want to hang with your friends on sport bikes my only real complaint is Ducati should have offered this bike with 180 mm travel standard and 200 mm suspension travel as an option as its just too tall for streets and I am 6 foot tall. Will be buying the 180 mm suspension kit Ducati is now offering as this bike will never do any hardcore off-roading - too expensive and heavy for that but otherwise its a great bike!

Don’t know if you made your choice yet, but having ridden the GS and the V4s back to back, I found the Multi much more versatile, and the GS felt asthmatic by comparison, especially up hill on long fast roads. I also found that leaving the multi in touring, made it much more relaxing and more comparable “everywhere” to the GS, whilst still having vastly more grunt…… so I bought the V4s. And I haven’t regretted it in over a year of ownership. That said, not tried the 1300GS yet, and I’m intrigued by the rally and the new RS.

The V4 ducati multistrada is clearly much faster than a GS1250, I would say though that low down in the RPM zone this new 1300 pulls much harder than the Multistrada. I guess before long someone will do a side by side test. Sadly I found the Ducati less refined and vibey at lower town and village speeds, but much more fun and very much faster once wound up. Thank you for watching and commenting.

@@FenTour yes, I think the twin boxer is happier at the very lowest end of the rev range. Really looking forward to trying the 1300. My neighbour has just bought the KTM1290SA so I’m hoping to get a rip on that in the coming weeks, once he’s run it in 👍😃👍

The new BMW GS Oh...Ummm...ahhhh....But.....How about a Honda PCX 125, I've heard they are going to lock Wales down to 20 mph and most motorways will be 55mph in the future. I think the days of big bikes are numbered...But....There was some nice tech on that Multistrada.........I like how the magic speedo blurred out, definitely would like one of those but it won't beat a radar gun. Sandy PS Honda PCX has a quick shifter sort of...They call it a Variator...You know you want one If I were you I would wait. Good things come to they that wait! Bloody nice bike though. Hot cylinder heads a bollox don't go together well though Martyn!

Cheers Sandy, sorry for the slow reply takes me ages to answer all the comments! You are right about small bikes, would I be happy to just have my CRF300L? I probably would be. My problem is my addiction for more bikes (and cameras) means ££££, if I only had the Honda and no other bikes I could retire from work!

I thought this was a Ducati test ride…not a BMW love video. The Multi blows the doors off a GS all day long. You should be riding a bike with an automatic transmission. Sorry, had to say it.
@FenTour

Nope was a test ride, I was all ready to order a Pikes Peak, sadly the BMW is a better bike for comfort etc. Ended up ordering an M1000XR and keeping the GS. And as for an auto I am looking forward to testing the upcoming automatic GSA. 😂😂

I tryed the 1300gs and this. I think the 1300 vibes more than the v4 lol. That side vibe of the bmw is anoying to me. And the v4 is way more fun. Way more refined to me.

I wonder if the bike I tested was a rogue, a V4 should be smooth…? Anyway I have ruled out the Pikes Peak now, despite it looking as sexy as… new bike arrives in April.

I am very fortunate to own a GSA and an XR. GSA best bike I’ve owned and have done 27k in two years. I love the power and acceleration of the XR and you just have to ride it sensibly, but…. You can be a hooligan now and again which is what life’s about. I’m seriously thinking about the V4 Rally as a replacement for both.
@FenTour
@FenTour 10 месяцев назад
I thought one of these v4s could satisfy me as you are thinking, GS all day comfort with the hooligan touch of the XR. Get the Ducati and does the lot, only as you can see by the vid it was not as refined or as comfortable as the GS.

Hi mate. I own a V4S and have done over 7k on it. Personally I wouldn’t change it for anything because I love the top end / speed and for me a bike has to be beautiful, but I agree with all your comments. There are days where I wish I just had a GS. The Multi is not generally a relaxing ride, it’s workable at low speeds but really only comes alive when you’re really on it hard. Which with my sportsbike/racing background I can’t do without. You have to work the gearbox to keep the revs above 3k - a V4 engine is never gonna be buttery smooth - and the fuel economy is genuinely abysmal. I’d love a bike to do both too but sadly there’s not one out there. I’ve ridden the GS and it’s a great bike and unless you need the very top of the rev range and ride it like a sportsbike, my advice would be to stick with the GS.

Thank you so much for the comment, for me this bike would have to be as well as the GS, I was hoping that the V4 could replace the GS for touring and also go like a sports bike. The latter it does so well… all the best b

Your video has articulated my struggle very well. R1200RT owner here, and looking for a 'sportier' ride. My heart says the Rally V4. My wallet prefers the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S. Even after fitting all the extras (Tech pack, heated seat, etc.) the KTM is close to $10k cheaper in the US. Compared to a well equipped R1300GS (and RT?), the price difference is easier to justify, but the engines make the riding style different. In may case, I can see me keeping the R1200RT for the long haul trips, where I spend a day(s) on the interstate, and buying the KTM for 'bad boy' rides and shorter trip. It will also help me sleep better when I have not spent $30+k on the V4 Rally. Let's hope I can find a comfortable seat for the KTM 🙂 Having also owned a K1220LT, it will take a lot to convince me to buy a K1600. I lived in fear of dropping the K1200 every time I came to a stop. The Honda Goldwing may be better option. I owned an S1000R for a while, and sold it due to high risk of going from 0 to jail. You reach a point where a motorcycle should only be used on a track.
@FenTour

Thank you for the comprehensive comment. You are wise to keep the RT and invest in an additional sportier ride, I am going to do the same; keep the R1250GS and get a sportier (comfortable) bike too, though it won't be the Ducati!

When compared to the speed indication on a Garmin XT2 while riding, the V4 Rally overstates the speed quite a bit.
