In this video, I cover the highly anticipated 9th generation of HP's top of the line mobile workstation product. This year, they use a more rounded design, intel's 12th gen CPU's, and DDR5 RAM. The official datasheet has yet to be released so I can't give extreme technical detail, but I compare what I do know versus my own ZBook Fury G8.

@@barsam2a I would love to, but first off I really don't like the new Fury design and I actually prefer the Lenovo P16. However, unlike other reviewers, I don't receive loaner units. I have to buy them. I can "review" it based on what other people say but that's the best I can do.

Excellent review, thank you! Have you had a chance to test it under the load? What are thermals of this book? Would you recommend it for Deep Learning as the mobile workstations suited to train neural models on GPU?

@@andysilvers9532 huge thanx for your reply! Actually, the main criteria are better thermals and more solid build quality. Hardware is very similar. So, if Zbook looks more reliable and has better thermals, that is it. Also I confused a bit by the removed Eth port in Lenovo ThinKap P16 ws. HP still preserves it.

Hi to all. Good video Andy. What I would like to say, since, I owned the G7, now I have the Fury G8 with i9vPro+quadro A3000 and Power G7 i7vPro, is that I'm sad to see how HP decided to "play" with the G9 🤨 Namely, before this was a professional machine for heavy duty tasks, so it was designed for that matter. Now they've like wanted to go "under the skin" of the gaming public, what is sad. Removing the double hinge design was maybe done to avoid bigger size display wobbling, but the cooling vents are now very "critical", as they look the same as for the rest of the lineup. My business includes heavy task lighting design/rendering and CAD. So, when you calculate light design in a big facilities all cores are 100% pumped for solid time (depending of the iX selection and project complexity). Since, when I do such task, my NB is docked in the office, meaning my display is closed = WITH THE NEW G9 DESIGN, THIS MEANS THAT THE AVAILABLE VENTS OUTLET WILL BE SIGNIFICANTLY WITH LESS AIR VOLUME!!! As said I have also the Power G7, which has such a design, and when I do something similar on it, I can literally feel how much less of the hot air comes out and how it struggles!!! Regarding the power supply, the G9 will have also the 230W brick - datasheets are now available! In general, I'm fully unsatisfied with the HP's most expensive workstation NBs, i.e. Fury, quality these days and especially HP's support for premium business devices! Maybe it's just me, but I had to replace the Fury G7, that came with the 4K touch that "broke" after few days of usage (screen ghosting/image retention), then I've ordered the higher spec G8 with the DreamColor 120Hz and i9vPro. Both of them I was waiting for 6+ months (European market) - unaccepted for business users!. For the actual G8I was firstly mislead in the tech spec, although I've demanded from the imported to send me the exact model type spec. sheet before ordering. On the HP's G8 global quickspec. sheet it was stated the all display options are coming with the ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) and that the DreamColor display has the pre-built SW for choosing the panels color gamut - IT DOESN'T HAVE ANY OF THAT! Moreover, the device came with a little "dent" on the display's housing!!! So, I was "wrestling" with the HP's support for a month about my complaint and their answer, regarding the misleading spec. was "We are sorry, but at the end of the spec. sheet you can find the sentence - HP shall not be liable for technical or editorial errors or omissions contained herein." I was like....?! Sorry, but under the law for protecting the buyers, you can't state that it's not your fault if you state that the device has something which it may not have, but we'll charge you anyway!!! THIS IS FEW THOUSAND EURO UNIT AND SHALL HAVE WHAT'S STATED AND PASS THE QC, SO IT'S NOT PACKED WITH A PHYSICAL DAMAGE!!! At the end they accepted the physical damage, but LIED ME AGAIN BY SAYING THAT I CAN KEEP THE EXISTING UNIT UNTIL THE NEW ARRIVES, since I was sent an DOA authorisation letter that I have to return the claimed unit within 2 weeks!!! Again "we are truly sorry!". I've asked them, how they promote the business workstations when their support for business is on the "stone age level filled with lies". This is a machine that is supposed to earn money for my company and if I pay it in advance, wait for 6+ moths and then have to exchange it and wait add. 6 months, how much is my unit worth at the delivery date and who is going to refund me business loses? So, after checking all available news about the G9 and taking my case into account, I'm wondering should I order the G9? FYI, I have in the office a beast of the former good era of HP - the 8570w, which works daily since 2012!!! Sorry, for writing all this, but I wanted to share with you important infos, so that you open "4 eyes" when thinking about buying and relying on HP products and support nowadays!!! Greetings and good luck!

Wow. A lot to take in. First off, I'm sorry to hear your frustrations with HP. Every company has some customers who are frustrated and I'm sad to see that it's you. Firstly, I think it's fascinating that we both have owned the same two computers - the Power G7 and Fury G8. I have had little to no trouble with QC or HP support, but I can imagine that different countries have different situations. I want to say in HP's defense that shipping delays for the Fury G8 have been a problem for every PC seller on the planet (cuz of Covid) and HP is not trying to screw you over there. They want to ship it fast, but sometimes they just can't. However, I agree about the vent design, it should be better placed and I will cover it in more detail in the coming months. However, in HP's defense once more, I've never heard of anyone using a laptop's processing with the lid closed. Maybe it's common in some industries, but I've never seen a single reviewer mention it. Still, I get what you are saying and I will try to incorporate your thoughts into future videos. Lastly, I am aware of the 230 Watt power brick and I'm glad to see it (though 280 Watt would be better).

@spalesan 2 года назад
@@andysilvers9532 Hi & thx for the reply. I can't agree that anybody frustration has to do with PC makers beeing pro and honest. As proven, they mislead in specs. and say "sorry", nevermind they've charged for it or said you can keep the device and after that NO! As for working with the closed lid, this is how most pro users work. In my office, I'm on a docking station, working on Z27 monitors, so I don't need my notebook screen and moreover if it's open win taskbar is main on it, what is harder to deal with mouse cursor moving around too much. Also, as you've said, removing the precize keyboard mouse knob, is petty. It's far better for precize apps, like CAD then trackpad. For pro workers RGB keyboard is just a gimmick adding the fact we use pro keyboard and mouse costing like >300$.
@fle2
@fle2 2 года назад
@@spalesan I also confirm that most pro users work with the closed lid, either with a conventional docking station or with a simple "Grovemade" dock for example. I am also concerned that the cooling vents will be a critical issue, even with vapor chamber. We will have a look at benchmarks later but reviews of Fury G7/Power G8 (same design) on "notebookcheck" already tell us a lot about thermal issues/fans noise. I may want to consider looking at Lenovo Thinkpad P16 which I think took an interesting approach for their new cooling system.

Great video, thank you. HP has released the G9 Fury specs and it seems that they have not upgraded the power brick this time again. Is this also bad for non-gaming but intensive (compiling, running VM, etc.) usage? I noticed the highest MacBook Pro version also has a "low" power adapter even though its performances are much praised: USB-C 140 W. It's even lower than the 200W on the highest Fury G9 configurations. Also, for non-gaming usages, would you recommend getting the highest configurations to benefit from the vapor chamber cooling system (as you may know for the G8, this enhanced cooling system was reserved for the highest GPU configuration only...) plus the "stronger" power adapter? The enhanced cooling system would keep the laptop quiet while the power brick would provide for enhanced CPU performances. Thank you in advance.
@andysilvers9532
@andysilvers9532 2 года назад
Thank you for your comment. The highest end Fury G9 actually comes with 230 watt power brick which is a big improvement over the G8. Apple gets away with less because they control the entire pipeline and have build a completely custom solution. Even so, Apples GPU power can't compete with the mobile 3080 or 3070. I do recommend getting the vapor chamber in every situation.
@fle2
@fle2 2 года назад
@@andysilvers9532 Thank you for your answer. I finally found the 230 watt power brick in the specifications table. However, I did read on both G8 and G9 quick specs this line (see the 20th technical specification footnote): "120 W power adapter is configurable with Intel UMA graphics. 150 W power adapter is configurable with NVIDIA T1000 and T2000 configurations. 200 W power adapter is configurable with NVIDIA RTX 3000 or higher and AMD graphic configurations." It may be an error at this time. So, that's a shame HP limits the vapor chamber cooling system to the highest GPU configurations as they came at an extra cost if you want a quiet/cold laptop. Thank you.

@@fle2 I don't understand this issue too. Some models of HP (omen) have a 330w adapter, why didn't they give that adapter with this model? Wouldn't there be a performance drop at ultra settings? The processor draws between 45-115 W, the graphics card draws between 80- 125 W. If the other hardware products (screen, ram, speaker, Bluetooth,ssd, wifi, etc.) draw at least 100 w, it is obvious that a 330 w adapter is needed. How is the 200w adapter sufficient for this laptop?

I work mostly with Autodesk CAD applications (Inventor), why seems my new Zbook 16 G9 12950HX, not any faster than my previous ZBOOK 17 G7 with xeon CPU. I have done some Benchmark testing with InvMark and had similar result. Is it because 12950HX is much more capable of what HP is letting it do ? Thx.
@andysilvers9532

I'm honestly surprised a 10th Gen Xeon is performing that well. But yes, my understanding is that in cinebench, Intel's 12th gen CPU's perform btw 2 and 3,000 points lower than they should. However, HP never intended for max power. Efficiency and reliability were always their goal. An HP Omen 16 or 17 would likely yield stronger results with the same chip.

It's definitely interesting how HP decided to take major risks in terms of thermals. I was looking at the Studio G9 and they actually removed one of the exhaust and now keep it like the macbook. If you do get a unit, it would be interesting to see how thermals are with the higher chipsets compared to your G8.
