Before the trade the Mavs lived and died by the tree. Now they have threats in the paint which makes them a lot more versatile. Also their Defense improved with the new guys

6:37 not just Derrick Lively, Dante Exum made Grant Williams expendable. When those two come back, they can have a 10 deep rotation that does not have to include Powell.

If Luka stsrts getting comfortable with the new guys the whole landscape changes. The domino effect from these guys addressing immediate weaknesses will make the whole team better.

Luka keeps getting better too! He's shown ability to make an impact on defense this season. He doesn't bring the highest defensive intensity every game, because it's too taxing to play at that intensity on both ends for an entire season, but I've noticed in Nationally Televised games that Luka has played great on both ends. On Christmas day against the Suns, Luka had 50 Points to go along with 4 Steals and 3 Blocks, Anthony Davis is the only other player to ever do that, and that was a preview of what Luka will be like in the Playoffs this season.

Bruh…Luka hasn’t been playing defense. I’ve been watching them and he might have had 4 or 5 games he gave respectable effort.

@@martelljhixson Luka is 10th in the league in isolation defense for all positions. He's not the best if you get him scrambling in rotations a lot, but he's good 1v1.

@martelljhixson I never said Luka was a top-10 defender overall, but in points per possession in isolation defense, facing a minimum of 50 isolation possessions, Luka currently ranks 10th amongst all players, allowing 0.78 points per iso faced on defense. That's a fact.

@@NBAImdbi agree with you that he’s a way better defender this season but there’s definitely some context that’s hidden in that stat, he’s probably guarding the worst player offensively, is he contesting shots when a player has no choice but to shoot when the shot clock is at 3 seconds?, and other things of that nature.

The wild part is on that luka kic out for the pj 3, in real time you see he had the lob for gafford but with pj wide open he let him eat and it paid off

josh giddy rlly, pj washington did good guarding him (despite 25 pts he was held below his average and forced a few misses by washington😁) and gafford was so good on close outs

Gafford looks really good with the Mavs, but he's pretty much the same player as Derrick Lively. You couldn't play both of them at the same time as it would completely mess up the spacing. The reason Gafford's first game was awesome was because Lively is injured and they basically had a very similar player join the team and be able to help out.
