@@maurem well ibis paint does that despite the fuact that I already bought the black version, they still require a subscription for other features Companies can be greedy
Great review, but the autofocus on the top down shots hurts my brain. You can turn it off for fixed shots like this so your hands don't make it go bonkers.
agreed. Im by no means a video, youtuber, pro, so i dont mean to come off as a snob but yes, the constant changing of the autofocus was making me question my vision, lol. thanks for this and all other reviews you do for all us artist folk!
Medibang will always have a special place in my heart because it was free and so was the only thing I could afford when I was a student. Glad to hear of it again.
Coming out on ios first without being cheaper or having more features than Procreate is a weird choice. I'd also think more MB users are on Android thanks to the limited options.
as far as i know (which isnt much) most apps that come to both ios and android usually develop for ios first because its a closed environment and theres less variation, theres a limited amount of iphones and ipads and its easier to find people on all of those to test the app, while on android there is many differences on devices from different models and brands, the hardware can be very different from model to model, and there is also mnay versions of android os on different brands (like samsung, xiaomi and such). ios has a more controlled environment to develop for and add to, while fixing little quirks and bugs that might be around
I have one thing to note about Procreate vs Medibang and that's in the brushes. I'd love to know more about the brush engine bc I know that Procreaate brushes, while impressive in what they can do, don't work the same as other brushes like those in PS, Medibang, sometimes CSP (though CSP is known to have a complex brush engine). Depending on your workflow, Medibang Pro might be great for someone who uses multiple apps in their workflow.
Yeah! That's what i found so difficult drawing using procreate, the brushes are super....wonky?! IDK I tried more than once and it's annoying to me because i use PS to draw and I didn't want a subscription for CSP, I'm so sad for paying that app thinking that it's similar to PS and seeing everyone loving & using it .
I enjoyed my time with my 2018 iPad, but it was time to upgrade and I really wanted to go Android again for a tablet, because I enjoy emulating games in Android. Got a Samsung Galaxy Tab S9, and have been missing Procreate (although I'm not an avid artist, I get the itch to doodle now and again). Glad to hear Medibang is getting a Pro Android version! I can wait. :-)
You'd want this over Procreate because a lot of its brush behavior/default brushes and settings are better-suited for clean comic/anime/manga style than Procreate. I've seen a number of people who draw with a clean style, refuse to switch to another app because Medibang's tools just have a better feel for them. I think if you could never get your anime-ish or cute art to look right in Procreate, Medibang is worth trying to see if it's actually a better app for you. It would definitely be a huge deal if it were on Android. I think PC users can tolerate the original version more than tablet users would.
yea, the anti-aliasing is a bit better from my experience with the older variant. i was waiting on them to finally update the ipad version, cause at first it seemed neglected compared to the one on pc
I'm honestly kind of baffled this didn't drop on Android at the same time or first, where I'm over here with a bit of Procreate Envy! This looks really good though so here's hoping that happens down the line!
Me too. I think people who need a Procreate clone most are Android & Windows user. Like, everyone who has an iPad for drawing already has Procreate, many even bought an iPad just for Procreate; don't know why they'd want to spend more on another app. And with Procreate being a one-time purchase at a very reasonable price, there's no price to beat unless it's free (which Medibang Pro isn't) Maybe the team is more familiar with iOS so they do it first to pin the code down, then later port it to other platforms.
@@NopWorkswhy the fk windows copy inferior app like procreate 💀. Windows Drawing apps have professional tools and functions unlike Procreate. "It's because of a simple UI" - 🤡. Desktop apps are for more professional functionality rather than simplicity.
As far as i know they Will release it at android but it needed some times since android has many tipe and the cpu was also a lot thats why it's needed some times
One thing it has over Procreate that I can see while playing around with it is a gradient tool similar to what is in HiPaint, Infinite Painter and Sketchbook Pro.
This is pretty cool but I do wish they went more the Clip Studio Paint EX route instead of Procreate for their Pro version. You know a pro version of the free Medibang app but with more advanced features that’s are in Clip Studio Paint EX but a little cheaper. But this would be great for new artist wanting a middle ground between Procreate and Clip Studio
@@rokchuntheholy6937 the desktop version of Clip Studio Paint you have the option of the one time pay or subscription but yeah unfortunately it’s only subscription on iPad. Yeah the older version of Medibang had all the basics one would need to create a comic.
It seems that the devs fixed the most archaic thing in the app, which was the interface, I've been a Medibang user for a long time and I really like the tools, I know their flaws and limitations but I love the way the brushes behave.
Digital artists are notorious for sticking to the tools that they already know, even if they're not optimal or out of date. I think they're going to have a monumentally difficult time trying to compete against Procreate. I also wouldn't be surprised if they never bring this out on Android.
I just jumped to 0:26, a load screen saying "perpetual license". That's an immediate like of the product and video, from me, in these times of "subscribe for even breathing..." PD: Who am I kidding... I'd always vote up Brad videos, unless I forget, or very heavily disagreeing on something... (very rare)
Looks interesting, but as much people i expected to be on Android since day 1 too. More options to choose always are good (there's good options in Android like Infinite Painter or HiPaint but new competitors always be welcomed)
I haven’t tried it yet, but M chip powered Macs run iPad apps natively, it’s just up to the developer to allow it. I think it’s just a matter of them making a request. Procreate doesn’t allow it, but art studio does.
3 things i look for in a drawing app these days: ability to flip the canvas without actually transforming the whole image, a reference/navigator window, and the ability to import custom (preferably photoshop) brushes. I saw only the flipping of the canvas here(maybe, it wasn't clear if that was a transformation or not). Are the other 2 things there at all?
Finally!!! A Procreate clone that's coming to Windows!! It's been years!!! I bet I'm going to be disappointed when they require a subscription instead of Perpetual license on Windows version.
Have you tried sketchable? It’s probably as tablet-y a drawing app can get and it’s only on windows. Although sketchable plus really chugs on my surface 8 pro. The old one runs fine.
@@sloppynyuszi Thanks. It's one of the great few Windows drawing apps that works well with touch, but it isn't really an answer to Procreate. It's kind of it's own thing.
Ps. What about custom brushes? What type of brush file does it use? Is it compatible with procreate brushes? Ibis brushes? Can we make our own? Pls reply.
Seeing this, I think the interface is better than procreate. Close to some professional software like Photoshop. Like all the layer settings appear when you click the layer. On procreate, I need to struggle with that small Alphabet for the blending mode.
Medibang really fumbled the ball on this one! They really should have developed this for Android first, since Procreate already exists on IOS! I would buy Medibang Pro for Android right now, because Procreate isn't available. If Procreate is watching this, they should jump on releasing a version of Procreate for Android right now, and steal all the thunder from Medibang!
It's been years of countless people requesting Procreate for other platforms. At this point, there's no reason Procreate refuses to be on Android & Windows other than them having signed some deal with Apple. They definitely have resources to make it happen, like they've just spent resource on the new Procreate Dreams. They could've easily hired Android & Windows developers to sell Procreate to more people.
Yeah it's chosen disdain at this point when even in 2024 where so many android tabs are much more expensive than some ipads everybody worships is still taken as last resort to even consider introducing anything to. It could've been a big deal for android since no matter how many good new apps come up, procreate will always be the top one for ipads. Every single developer ends up catering to the ios market and it's frustrating tbh.
@@mksketchmsunderstandable frustration, but market research keeps telling app devs that iOS folks spend more money on and in apps than other mobile device OS users. Until y’all start spending more money, expect devs to keep prioritizing the folks who help pay their bills🤷🏾♀️
@@EchoJ if they actually made apps catered to android people will spend money on it. They can't do it if no apps are catered to them in the first place lmao
I tested it out. From what I can tell the gradient tools don't color band the way that Procreate's airbrushes and gaussian blur tool does. So I might use this tool for some parts of my rendering process.
Hey Brad, Not sure what your camera setup is but it kept focusing on your hand and bluring the screen. Small suggestion: lock the focus on the screen before recording.
One thing Medibag paint Pro doesn't have that Medibang paint free version does have is the time-lapse, unless I'm somehow missing it and haven't been able to find anything to help me with it and the stabilization isn't as good. To me this feels like they took a lot away from Medibang rather then gave it any thing new other then being similar to Procreate in workflow, i have since gotten a refund and decided to go back to the original and just get the premium version
Didn't see anyone mention this but! When your free trial runs out you are NOT automatically charged, you need to actually purchase it next time you open the app, so don't worry too much about trying the free trial
In ibis it has ref window, and has two options "canvas mode window" and "reference mode window". Under "canvas mode window" its like adobe photoshop "navigator". But my problem is you cant pan and zoom Independently, you can only control panning and zooming from the "main" active canvas where you draw. So i want to pan and zoom on the cmw/navigator independently, thats doesnt control the main canvass or the or the other way around. And my 2nd problem is i wish i can flip the "canvas mode window/navigator" horizontally. In medibang, does it have solutions to what i mentioned above?
Imo: why wouldn’t you just use procreate. I was expecting it to be more manga focused, after trying, just went back to procreate and csp. But it will be huge for android, it’s a legitimate alternative for procreate. Just confused why they released it on iOS first
Great review... just got my s9 ultra and I'm looking forward to this coming to Android... One critique about the video... It seems you have the mic on the table, attached to the table, or touching the table somehow? I'm listening with headphones and each of your touches on the iPad is quite amplified because of this... It's a bit jarring and distracting, at least for me... Otherwise, great video!
I was hoping this is is on Android ^^ Just startet drawing in general and i dont wanne learn 5 programs so i´m searching for a good app/drawprogramm so i can concentrate on drawing. What would you recommend now for an S9 User? That line stabilisation looks realy good btw. Thanks for the video!
Infinite Painter, the full version isn't much expensive and the app is really good (you pay once for the full app, i purchased it for 2.5 dollars for new user offer)
This - I mean the Pro version - should be perfect for a tablet like the XP-Pen Magic Drawing Pad, especially for those seeking that Procreate feeling, which is somewhat lacking in the Android market.
Brad, I make D&D maps with Affinity Designer on desktop and it's crucial that they be drawn with an accurate 1" grid. AD has been my go-to for a while, but I began on Android and now have an S24 Ultra. I've been trying to find a mobile app that not only has guides, but an accurate way to lay out a measured grid that can also be snapped to and I just haven't found it (it doesn't quite look like Medibang does it either). Would you happen to know of one I might have missed (I'm primarily either in Infinite Painter or Autodesk Sketchbook Pro). Thx!
One question, in procreate, if you draw a circle, it automatically fixes it , which is called “Quick shapes “, this app does the same, I mean, without accessing that shapes tab?
Could you show the Tab S9's compatibility with Windows programs, if it's good for drawing, because it works as a 2 monitor via USB C (the S9 FE only has a 2.0 connection and doesn't pass video)
I want iPad painting apps to have a dialogue that allows for Save as or Don’t Save as MacOS programs do. Procreate is a perfect example of what annoys me about this.
I wonder why so many drawing programs try to beat apple with procreate instead of taking the lead on the basically barely touched android app market. I wished Leonardo was on android and my go to medibang now made a better version of their app but also for apple...
Would you use this over CSP if it does come to Android? I'm getting a Galaxy tab for art in a few days and am trying to decide which art app to buy because money is tight.
Brad, Please consider turning off the high tech, super fast gadget-o-tronic auto focus on your camera, and instead use old school 20th century manual focus on the tablet surface. 😅 Edit: This is very difficult for me to watch, sorry... Your hands are very nice, yet I really wish to see (and especially read) what happens on the tablet screen. 😟
if u prefer one already why need to ask? they are different apps that do different things. like u said one is more vector-based. some workflows are better in one app than the other
I found this app to be glitchy, the worst thing being its automated cloud saving which repeatedly lost hours of work even after it expressly stated it had saved. A little frustrating.
