I'm not bored because I'm stuck at home, I'm going insane because I'm still putting in my 40hrs remotely while simultaneously trying to teach and entertain my 5yo; HE NEVER STOPS TALKING, MY BRAIN IS GOING TO MELT.
Ha! That would have been a good one. Except I think Sting sings four octaves higher than Celine. I would have shattered the window next to me trying. ;)
That's why I no longer watch channels like Vehicle Virgins anymore, as much as there is a lot of car content it feels more like show off that it it does show knowledge about cars or driving enthusiasm thereof.
Hes a joke. I lost sever respect for him when Tyler hoovie 355 burnt down AND THE SAME DAY he buys a BRAND NEW Ferrari. That's like saying "sorry you're wife died, but hey look at my new wife"
25:38 Thank you Derek! I'm sick of the influencer crap and my consumption is primarily knowledge based. I may watch some influencer in the moment, but I get tired of that junk so fast, and it's content that actually contains information I want to know that I keep coming back for, and then I become a follower who regularly consumes that content. Carmudgeon makes the cut for me!
Jason your mini instagram reviews are honestly gold. Straight to the point and discuss exactly what people want to know. Keep em coming. Great episode as always
The mini Instagram reviews are all I can handle for new car news. Gives me an idea of what is going on so I don't feel completely out of touch, but I have no actual interest in any car made after about 1995, so I'm never going to sit down a read a proper review or even watch Doug Demuro drive one.
This is a great episode! Derek, you are spot on: the internet unfortunately gives everyone (even morons) a voice and that degrades discourse, but true enthusiasts/nerds/etc. will always seek out the experts (like the Carmudgeons 😍). And Jason, to that end, you will never be irrelevant: an informed, data driven, objective voice will always prevail over the vapid douchebaggery of influencers to the enthusiasts (even if we are in a minority) ✌️❤️
My mum and sister are both nurses here in the UK, Derek Tom-Scott. People putting themselves on the line are far struggling far more than us self isolating you are totally right, your mum is a hero! Ring her as often as you can and be nice :)
Glad to see a new Curmudgeon. Hyphen noted that he was going out riding and I will say it has been nice up here in the Bay Area getting out for rides, but the few cars that are out have been driving like psychopaths. I saw a guy driving on the sidewalk a couple days ago, so he could turn right on red, amongst many odd things in the last couple weeks. Makes me a bit more nervous when riding, especially up quiet back roads.
Never realized that you didn’t make money off insta. Thank you thank you thank you for all that you do for us. Love watching all your stuff for the entertainment value and the info that I get from you. Thanks Cammisa!
1 - donuts in a Muira, please 2 - why do you have [60] after your tire pressures on you white board? 3 - Keep up the good work ! I really enjoy the show
1 - I've seen that bracket system before for ambient air temperature while the cars at rest, I don't think that's the case here though. DONUTS IN THE MUIRA!
Could the pandemic result in a long term increase in the number of people working from home? This could change the demand for cars and traffic patterns.
@@johnbacon4997 And have they all sold their cars and plan to work at home forever? (When the period ended where everybody who could had to work from home in my homecountry, most of them complained that they didn't like that and were eager to leave home again. They claimed to have a sort of cabin-fever. The little time i worked from home i had no such problem, just that i am only able to do minor things. Most of my work can't be done from home. The apparati i have to repair and maintain are on certain locations)
Jason, watched you for years now. Thanks for the effort here. it's a break from my 14-hour nights as a hospital RN on the med-psych unit, where if they're sick, they don't want to get well, or, if they're alive, they want to die. Perspective, right? One of my techs has just tested positive from helping out downstairs on the medical floors. I need this RU-vid and my on little drives(where I never get out, or off the motorcycle). These austere conditions, like hand washing and masks, that the public is lamenting, are no more than what we live with every night as nurses. We'll make it. 911, BMW 428 M-sport,6-speed manual, '86 560SL, Forrester, 2500 HD 6L gas, 1974 BMW R75/6, 2010 Triumph Bonneville.
I loved the part where Jason said “for the first time everyone else is benefiting instead of the 1%ers”. Oh what a wave was coming towards us he was blind to.
Love the new format! It's really cool and has a cozy/homely vibe to it. Feels different but definetly good different! Hope you guys are doing well and are healthy and safe.
There's an "alliance" Renault/Nissan/Mitsubishi, with shared and cross ownership of each other's equity with a predominant ownership by Renault, but the sharing out may have changed a bit these past months. So you could say that this group would encompass the 3 main marques mentioned and add to that, on Renault side, Dacia, Samsung motors, Lada (AvtoVaz) and Alpine ; on Nissan's, add Infinity, Datsun and Venucia. But this group is not connected to PSA (Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Opel/Vauxhall and now Fiat- Chrysler) , both groups are pretty much in competition on the same segments, and try to coexist (or survive?) alongside (underneath? )VAG. Thanks for the show and the great content you're offering us guys. Cheer up and patience for the confining, we're all in the same sh*t.. Greetings from France 🙂 (you hate us but we, mere car enthusiasts, love you nonetheless, because you're one of the very best, Jason 😉)
Derek, your mom is a true hero. I'm still working (truck driver) so most thing haven't changed for me. I do love the lack of traffic in the Bay Area though!
This was an absolutely tremendous discussion of the hobbyist end of an industry, and the experts -- and not experts -- who serve as information sources. I had direct experience in a comparable world for much of my career, and saw exactly what Jason and Derek observed. There was an optimistic view of the eventual outcome and a pessimistic view. I was an optimist, but, sadly, the pessimistic outcome won out. For the sake of all car enthusiasts, I hope the better outcome prevails this time. I really enjoy hearing the views of these two, and Jason is getting to be my favorite US commentator.
Some small fact-checking here... Renault is not part of PSA, The Renault-Nissan Alliance includes : Renault, Nissan, Infiniti, Datsun, Mitsubishi, Alpine, Dacia and Lada. But it's true that FCA first asked Renault-Nissan for a merge and it was then rejected. Love the show tho, keep going. Cheers from Switzerland !
Online auctions for regular cars (local car auctions and Manhiem) are either not running or running every other week with an actual run. Currently cars that are still under warranty are stable but other cars are wildly low or high since people can't inspect/rig them in person. ACV still seems to sell cars at a premium but they are missing a lot of issues which cost them not the seller. I'm a used car dealer in SC-USA (finance through banks/credit unions) and we're still doing decent business but I'm not going to be spending the same money to buy cars right now. The $1200 check everyone is going to get is going to affect prices on many of the cars I buy since a lot of Buy-Here/Pay-Here places are going to buy up everything
You guys were on to very correct thoughts on durable goods failing . People thought cars value would drop like a rock. As they have gone up and up and more than doubled in price.
You know that Whatsapp is owned by facebook, right? Not the company I trust for filtering bad information on the internet. We can always dream of a better internet future. It will be interesting to see what happens first, self driving cars, or accurate information online. Great show, as always. Keep up the optimism. We all need more of it these days.
The influencers have a huge advantage. They are typically normal people with a passion similar to ours. They will cover a different and sometimes more engaging perspective. I think a smart future has organizers and influencers working together to provide all the angles . Not separated by whose and expert and whose not.
I'm actually up to 50 hours a week now with a 15% raise and work is absolutely insane. Being essential is fucking terrible, the money's nice, but it's not fun. I'm looking forward to taking a break and going on a road trip when this is all over.
I grew up with subscriptions to 3-4 car magazines at the same time. My face was constantly behind a magazine if I wasn't doing school work. I read monthlys from MotorTrend, Car and Driver, Road & Track, Automobile, Sports Car International and occasionally some of the British publications. The Road&Track annuals with highlights from reviews of the year were some of my favorites. I loved those magazines so much that I saved them and every time I'd move, a couple dozen really heavy boxes of car magazines would come with me. That ended long ago as the magazines got thinner and thinner and more expensive with redundant content on the web. The shift from paper in some ways is a bummer, but that's evolution. But for me, the saddest part of the disintegration of the media is the loss of original, quality writing. I'm so disappointed to click on Road&Track's web site and find that it's mainly pointing to other sources of video and news. Today, most of the quality content is in videos with writing being a very small, and late, afterthought.
In London they have ultra-low emission zones where only hybrids and full electrics are allowed on week days between certain times. Classic cars are fully exempt. I think this is a great standard for other cities to copy.
I have yet to see a Miura doing donuts! Anyways, I agree that people should buy cars with the intent of enjoying driving it. Not because of its resale value down the line. Kudos for still coming out with new contents.
I don't know the exact law in Germany. But in portugal of you reside in city it's not mandatory to change your car. So it's not so bad for now. Still awesome show as usual. Thank you guys. Stay safe!
I think the influencers are good way for a type of intro/gateway into car culture. Someone not into cars could watch a few of their videos, become more interested into cars and then start seeking out the more technical stuff. The lack of technical info make the videos more accessible to more people/casual viewers
I hope the magazines survive. I was really disappointed when Car Craft and the other Ten publish magazines closed. I look forwards to my Road and Track and Motor Trend arrive in the mail. Mind you I grew up reading magazines, and I appreciate the writers like Peter Egan, Jonny Lieberman and of coarse Jason. My kids on the other hand consume their media digitally.
Ahh Jonny Smith! My other favourite RU-vid car reviewer. All of you who enjoy these sorts of vids should also check out Smith and Sniff (Jonny Smith and a writer for Top Gear just chatting shit in cars). Very entertaining.
Jason, we are the same age and you are doing my dream job. But where you moved into driving these awesome automobiles, I'm driving a delivery truck. That being said, if we are dinosaurs then I'll grow old with your opinions. Couldn't agree more with you. Sorry Derek your intelligence of the automobile industry blows me away, I just align with Jason more. #pessimisticasshole
What happened to the e30 Wagon video? That’s my lust from the past that I need in my life again and your 2.7 was epic and was gutted I couldn’t watch that episode again :(
Jason & or Derek - if you guys ever come to Palm Beach County, FL, allow me to buy you each a drink. You two rock, especially Jason. Of course GenX are dead right about everything, especially about the rich kid influencers (ugh, cannot stand them).
Just a suggestion; You may want to find another "fact checker". I have no idea how Snopes.com became the be all, end all, go-to for fact checking. It was started by a husband and wife team with no formal investigative training. Now, they're 50% owned by an ad agency. No conflict there. Just thinking out loud. Love the channel. And yes, definitely want to see Derek do donuts in a Miura.
I think an important detail about the market for Car & Driver vs influencers is that people aren’t buying their cars based on some rich kid with a Lamborghini. The people engaging with that content generally aren’t that fortunate themselves. And when they actually come of age and are in the market for a car, sure, you can check out RU-vid reviewers, etc, but the service between Car & Driver compared with people like you guys is functionally the same: it’s the actual information that makes a big purchase a rational one. The choice between a RU-vid influencer and Car & Driver is just a question of format. Conflating the influencer scene and the market for buyer information is a bit of a false dichotomy.
I fueled up in earlier this week at 1.12, but I saw afterwards our local Costco has .99 cent a gallon gas. Premium is different though, even at stations that were same ~1.15 with regular gas, I've seen anything from 1.69-2.89.
Slight correction on that comment concerning older cars entering German cities. There is a beautiful thing called "veteran" or "historic" car, which means that in case you have a car in original condition and its at least 30 years old. Then you may driver it everywhere because its a veteran. Dont know if the US has something similar... but it means you actually can drive an E30 in Stuttgart :-)
The nyc construction industry has been all but stopped, even as an architect who can work from home, nobody is paying until work starts again. Also building department is closed for drawing review and permits approvals
Great episode as usual. Quick comment, PSA merged with FCA. As a matter of fact, FCA had to reduce its value (by distributing cash) to have an equal partnership with PSA.
I'd love to hear your take on Consumer Reports. They're practical but a lot more competent at evaluating cars than most car enthusiasts give them credit for.
I grew up in a world where being more shit = being more rich. Which is difficult for someone who loves money but is also a perfectionist who is tied to dignity, passion and giving something 100%
