-More than 150 professionals have concentrated their efforts on the recovery of "Madrid's most emblematic monument", according to the mayor, José Luis Martínez Almeida, during his visit to the new Puerta de Alcalá this Wednesday.
-Almeida has recognized the "extraordinary technical complexity" of the work that has been carried out to alleviate the "really severe pathologies" that the monument presented in terms of the "wear and tear of materials" and has stressed that with this intervention, "the most complete, profound and necessary for 30 years", the City Council has obtained "very valuable information" that will allow "it to guarantee prevention work so that it remains in perfect condition in the coming years".
-The restoration of this heritage emblem has been promoted and developed by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, which has carried out structural consolidation work on the sculptural groups , damp has been eliminated, the lead on the roof has been replaced and treated stone on all facades.
Intrinsic degradation factors
Since its construction in the times of Charles III until the present, the Puerta de Alcalá has been the subject of numerous interventions to guarantee its conservation and public enjoyment. The last major intervention was carried out in 1992, followed by various smaller interventions aimed at its maintenance. This latest restoration project for the Puerta de Alcalá began to be designed in 2022 .
