The new Motorola Razr joins a wave of second-generation foldable phones. The new Razr has a better build, refined design and a host of software improvements to take advantage of its unique design. At the core of the phone is a 6.2-inch foldable screen that Motorola claims can be folded open and closed 200,000 times. To back that claim, Motorola invited us to its lab to see how it tests the screen, as well as show us some of the improvements to the phone's build and hinge mechanism.

Bought and sold that phone this week. Wanted to like it. The flip was super satisfying. The tiny external display was helping me avoid using the phone as a distraction device. But it needed to be charged like twice a day, the single speaker was very tinny, the performance of some apps (LastPass, for example) in Android was less smooth than iOS, and the final, worst thing of all was that Android Auto was completely broken. It didn't work at all wirelessly, only facilitated phone calls; wired, it would start to work for a couple seconds and then break. This is something Motorola has been aware of since the phone launched in October (almost half a year now) with no fix. No cool flip is worth giving up music in my car-particularly for a phone with so many other problems. It's a shame. Hopefully in the next few years they'll have gotten all this stuff (the battery in particular) under control. I admire their ambition, but for me this phone just was not it.

Motorola"s test equipment was simple but effective at testing the durability of the phone.

The testing is like opening the phone in both hand very gently. Whereas in reality, most people will do that with one hand and with one finger inserts in between and flips that open. The will create a lot more pressure to the hinge...

Would like to know whether the test phones survived AFTER open and closing 200,000 times? Did Motorola tried to fold and unfold beyond 200,000 times? At which point did the phones fail/start showing issues?
@gustavomercado1599

It doesn't work as you think. If motorola says it las 200k times it's because the phone does it reliably, after reaching that number the hinges could decay, all this depends on how the user treats the phone

This is just an ad for the Razr. I still don't understand why cnet's test was 25k+ and razr is 200k+...are they testing it properly?
@JuVe_546
@JuVe_546 4 года назад
The cnet test was for the past generation, the new one may last longer. Nevertheless, motorola did say the last one would last longer, I think 100k flips, so perhaps the cnet tests was harsher/more realistic. They need to do it again with the new generation to really know
@hjb2tube
@hjb2tube 4 года назад
pay attention to CNET's test and you'll see that they clamped the two halves in a fixed position that forced the hinges. Also I suspect the clamps were a little off center thus causing much more stress. Motorola's lab test uses wires that slide when the open gesture is made, just like your thumb will slide when opening the phone without stressing the hinges

CNETs test was pretty horrible. I just bought the phone. Yeah it was expensive but it’s small and I like the fact that the screen isn’t exposed all the time

The phone isn't being opened on the hinge. The closing arm is taking the shock from being open, not the hinges. Sorry but I not trust.

I mean doing 54 folds a day you would hit 200,000 in ten years. I'd be questionable whether or not the battery could hold up for ten years or if 5G will be the current standard. Most people get a new phone at least every four years, you would have to open and close it 136 times a day.

I really like the idea of bringing back flip phones while improving the smartphone software. No need for a bunch of phone cases if the phones close off the screen and is durable enough for daily use. I’m just waiting on an iOS flip of some sort.

@vtr279
@vtr279 3 года назад
... Why? So you can pay $3,600 for locked content behind paywalls and obsolete hardware that's bought from Samsung and their past flagship scraps/oled screens + tech ... OH.. Yes.. And that "Apple" logo on the back - basically a subpar ZFold 1st gen (by the time they'd ever get one released.. Lol. ) instead of the VASTLY MORE prestigious 'Samsung' emblem.. ? Listen... People just do NOT get it. I had the OG iPhone (8gb top of the line model.. Lmao) in 2007 on Day One launch and missed a day of school and everything to get it, and THAT my friends was the LAST great revolution and the ONE TRICK that the Jobs pony pulled off in a THEN very premium way...... By 2014, Android had a LOT of devices better than CrApple iPhony..... And 2015 - with the release of the Galaxy S6/S6 Edge/S6 Edge Plus in that STUNNING gold platinum color and all its glory.... It became a dead ringer for ANYBODY that knows the technology industry and the way the insides work.

Opening the flip with wire is the worst idea !! Most users would open the flip from one of the corners! So, this 200k number is just for marketing and not really testing.
@willo7979
@willo7979 4 года назад
They simply can’t mimic a finger tip/nail pressing onto the side of the split and then squeeze it open, and do it consistently, not even 100 times. Else, they have to employ bunch of flap tester sitting at the test lap and do this all day. Frankly, 200,000 times is nothing. In those days, owners of Motorola microtec simply open their phone to kill time, like bursting bubble wraps.

Do not buy this phone as the screen peels off within 2 months of use, don’t waste your money, see the reviews as it is all over the internet about the screen issues, would suggest don’t buy as it completely crap. I have bought it and it has been replaced by Motorola twice but still the issues persist

Hello CNET, after paying upwards of One-Thousand Plus dollars, one should expect nothing less than 'Perfection'! In my personal opinion, the reason(s) why the screen failed in the first test was due to the fact (?) that the motion of opening and closing, was 'Way Too Fast', creating sufficient heat from the constant motion, which, in turn, placed too much stress on the glass. It certainly makes sense to me! Well, tomorrow, 12/27/2023, I'm taking my Personal Leap of Faith, and purchasing the Motorola Razr, with the folding screen...it might be a 'Crap Shoot', but well-worth the chance...hoping it offers good insurance coverage! If it fails, "I'LL BE BACK!" Thank you! Addendum: On Second thought...!

I bought a Motorola Phone last year. I have a love for Motorola since I grew up near Sunrise FL. The Phone Sucked!! Took it back because of the issues, got another of the same and the same problem. The phone will all of the sudden have a mind of its own. It seem to happen when I came from my Air conditioned house to the hot outside weather. Too bad..
