The New Reality: Why are some First Nations still without clean drinking water?

Turning on the tap and getting clean, fresh drinking water is something most of us take for granted. Yet, it is still a dream for people in dozens of First Nations communities across this country.
A year-long joint investigation by a consortium of universities and media organizations including Global News, APTN News, and the Institute for Investigative Journalism reveals allegations of flawed and incomplete work being done as well as a lack of federal oversight as part of the problem. Krista Hessey reports.

Doing an assignment on this topic right now. After doing research I found out that the Canadian Government makes about 5 billion dollars a year and it costed them 1.8 million to fix 28 First Nations community's water. For YEARS the government neglected this issue and claimed there's "not enough money" to resolve it, yet they somehow (while making 5 billion a year) managed to throw out 1.5 billion a day for Canada during the pandemic for 2 months straight! ($91,500,000,000 for those months). In order for the government to afford that they had to save up for years and years and years! If that's the case, if they were saving up all of that money, why wasn't it put into fixing this crisis? This is all on the Canadian Government's website. It also says that clean/safe water is a right to all Canadians but here we are! Once again, our incompetent government has neglected the First Nations/Indigenous people and showed where they sit on the priority list.

..History Professor at Trent University...David King..I gotta rant a bit...someone needs to explain very slowly and clearly to non-Aboriginal ppl that their taxes do not support First Nations. The truth is very few Canadians pay more into the system than they get out of it. They're taxes are not enough to even sustain their own standard of living let alone someone else's. Canada's massive wealth is because of natural resources and no other reason. And as everyone knows, not one stone came over on the ships for Europe. There isn't a village or town in Canada, not even a single detached household that is self-sustaining without natural resource wealth. It cost over $100,000 just to install a crosswalk light and that doesn't even include mainenance. $100,000 just for 5 or 6 blocks of pavement. Public Transit/highways roads and mainenance costs millions and billions. We haven't even discussed healthcare and education. Most all Canadians would have to live in high rise apartments for us to even have a chance at sustainability without natural resource wealth. The wealth comes from the Natural Resources and that obviously has not equally been spent in First Nations communities...yet it's existence did not arrive on the ships with the Europeans...it was already here...the estimated resource wealth in reserved lands alone is billions and billions of dollars and that doesn't included shared lands/treaty lands. Polticians need to act like adults and educate Canadians about this myth and tell their supporters that they're taxes alone do not even sustain them. They are not supporting Aboriginal people and never have.

$16,000,000 ÷ 206 residents = $77,700 per person At 4.2 persons per household= $326,000 per household. A proper engineering study and forensic accounting study seem to be warranted. Eg Why is RO effluent specified to go to wastewater treatment? This restricts effluent flow making RO units less effective for a given permeate flow for both inorganic and dissolved organic separation. Eg A household water purification system can be bought for under $10 000. $10;000 × 100 'outlets' = $1,000,000. Say $2 million. Non-potable water pumping and distribution system extra. Say $2 million. Where is the other $12 million in 'value' gone? Yes, further investigation is warranted.

Most rural people, First Nation, or, otherwise usually use well water or flowing river water and boil. I remember living on The Balsam Creek Reserve between Timiskaming, Quebec and North Bay Ontario sifting through well water to eliminate the mosquito larva swimming in the water. Water was the least of my problems. However, if one has electricity one can use a dehumidifier. The water is crystal clear as it is taken from the air. Most people in Toronto buy water rather than drink city water. I remember, as a young teen, making a face the first time I drank city water in Windsor it made me miss the mosquito larva it tasted that horrendous.

Its the government infrastructure is the problem. INAC does not do any over sight, there is way too much money for one thing, when that money would cover it all. 1. Example GOVERNMENT gives 16 million for Water Plant, just the water plant, not the distribution or storage (water tower) 2. Architect designs a plant trying use up all the 16 million. Just the water plant, not the distribution or storage (water tower) WTP should be designed for where it is, cost to build, cost to maintain, is there industry nearby. None of these are taking into account. Where a simple high efficient conventional water plant will be more than whats needed, they will design a high tech nano membrane plant. 3. Engineer will cut corners to save money because of the high tech plant. This could be all addressed if they would just build simple conventional plants, use the rest of the money to build huge reserviors and better distribution system.
