That Rogue one looks much prettier but my black/galvanized pipe DIY mace works just as well for less money. Plus I can put different length 1" pipe handle sections to convert it to a shorter club instead of the mace configuration OR change the reducing coupler to use either 3/4" pipe for standard 1" plates or keep the 1-1/2" pipe for Olympic plates... so much more versatile too.

Love love love my Adex clubs. Haven’t moved onto mace work yet, but intent is to just buy another Adex to make use of the weights I already have. Being able to just use 2” change plates is appealing on this item, but being already in the Adex ecosystem, their mace just makes more sense to me.

My Onnit 10 pound mace is also loadable. I line a Rogue HG collar with some flexible packing foam sheet I saved. Works great. Cost: $49 plus shipping. It's not advertised as loadable, and it's not designed or intended to be loadable, but it is in fact loadable. Just line a collar you already have and add plates. The tube is dead straight and well manufactured.

I think the hollow 12.5lb 45" is the sweet spot for most while still a tad too heavy for any beginners but doable to work into.

Thanks for reviewing a mace. They’ve become one of my favorite workout tools in the past few years. But a 20-pound starting weight is just too heavy for me and probably for most beginners. You mentioned briefly that the Rogue mace feels good unloaded despite having a symmetrical weight distribution. You can make your own symmetrical maces and clubs by ordering steel rod cut to your desired length from a metal supplier and rounding the ends off with a metal file. I have a bunch of various lengths, either 35- or 40-mm in diameter, some cylindrical and some hexagonal. I work out with them nearly every day. My favorites are the cylindrical ones made of high-grade stainless steel. They’re a bit pricy, but they are really attractive and will last forever.

Finally a use for all those loadable dumbbell plates!
@BluegillGreg

I made an adjustable mace by cutting down a 6', 15 pound spin-lock barbell to 38". It weighs 7.8 lbs, and gets that good asymmetrical loading with a few pounds of plates. I was able to do the work with just a bench vise, a hacksaw, and a hand file. It was a fun project and this mace got used a lot last fall, winter and spring. I kept it in my truck and stopped on the way home from work to use it outdoors. The 12" of threads leave about 10.5" of loadable space after accounting for collars. Cost: elbow grease and an unused bar. I made a 23" club out of the other end of the bar. The knurling gives good grip while also allowing intentional sliding for exercises that require hand position change.

I own the Rouge Fitness MR20 Mace. It is a nice mace, but very expensive. I spent $259.51 for a Rogue M20R Mace ($225 + $16.40 shipping and handling + $18.11 tax = $259.51). The problem with it is that it is so nice, I don't want to use it. It is like having a stainless steel sledgehammer that you don't want to use because you don't want to scratch, nick, or marr it. Thus, I end up using my Arm Assassin Strength Shop Steel Loadable Mace, which only cost me $50, far more, even though it doesn't look as nice, yet does what a steel loadable mace is supposed to do.

@@Avies48 The Arm Assassin Steel Loadable Mace is made of black steel but is nowhere near as nice as the Rogue Fitness MR20 Mace, and it also doesn't have the rotating sleeve. Yet, it does what a loadable mace is supposed to do, so I use it almost all of the time, even though I own 10 other maces. I also own the Kensui Fitness wood AdjustaMACE, which BROKE the first time I put 35 lbs of weight plates on it. I didn't even get to use the Kensui Fitness wood AdjustaMACE once before it broke. I don't worry about nicking, scratching, or marring the Arm Assassin Steel Loadable Mace, and Arm Assassin Strength Shop is a hidden gym of American exercise equipment manufacturers, which has very reasonable prices. I also own 3 Titan Fitness Loadable Maces. Two I keep empty so I can do dumbbell-like unbalanced weight training on. The other, I loaded with steel ship ballast, which looks like steel shot, from Rotometals, which I bought off of Amazon. It weighs 53.6 lbs.

I also use and like the Kensui EZ Mace. 2.8 lbs, 39", 11" of loadable space. I got this 3rd and use it the most. $70 dollars. The thing was not straight when it arrived. For the price, I'd like it to be the same quality as a decent baseball bat. I wanted to return it, but am glad I kept it. It's not very out of true, and works fine. I like that as an old athlete I can warm up with the handle plus a very small plate, and go up in load from there. I can swing 20 pounds, but using that weight for a warmup would be asking for a tweak or worse. For developing a fast swing the wooden Kensui is the best of the 3. If you play baseball and want to develop the ability to hit from both sides of the plate this would be a great tool.

@thetruemorg

19 years now for having done pretty much every style (British, Iranian, Indian) club training: 20 lb start weight is pretty darn high for someone that may have wonky shoulders. The old physical culture books talked about how you could Gain a lot of development from clubs at 1 lb to 2 lb and maces under 10 lb. That was in an era where axes were normal for cutting firewood. Having taught a lot of people that would definitely be in the athletic category. A 5 lb mace is plenty to learn technique making sure not to screw up a small muscle in the shoulder girdle. Sure, they can progress up to 20 lb pretty easy and quick But the mentality around The number of pounds seems to be in full effect rather than A sensible starting point. Sure. The rogue completionist needs this, but there are a dozen other companies that do loaded maces even better. Adex in my opinion is easily the best. Different handles different thicknesses different lengths and the full set is going to cost you $600... And it will be the thing that two or three generations of humans will use before you get any breaking down. You could buy yourself five different weights of the onnit mace (Or the cheaper just as good Amazon special) for $200 to $300. At the do-it-yourself method with old baseball bats or plastic bats (With anything really to fill them with) Will lead you down the rabbit hole of learning the technique and not wasting that much money. $345 for the entire set of bumpers plus 250 sure that would be the last mace you purchase... But the loss of the good ergonomics of the smaller head and the high barrier for entry for physical capacity without really screwing yourself up is just kind of high in my opinion. There's literally dozens of better options and for that kind of price you can even go with someone on Like Ryan j. Pitts on Instagram for a similar price. That rogue mace is better than the cybertrucking quality but it's a big truck flex hiding someone's little tennis ball...

20 bucks says Coop deletes this comment but the Kensui wooden mace is better and way cheaper. I use the mace for a good shoulder warm up and in shoulder training. I don’t spend that much time using it compared to all the other exercises/equipment I use. So, no reason to spend that much money on it. Coop said himself it would be hanging on the wall gathering dust. Plus to come back from an injury I might get in the future I’m glad I have a nice low starting weight available to me. Already spent an easy $50k on this home gym (basement, perfectly climate controlled and painted and lighted) but who’s counting…lol

Timely video as I've been looking at mace options. I actually DO NOT like the separately rotating sleeve/shaft for one reason: it takes away the rotational inertia that is traditionally built into the mace, and therefor allowing you to "work easier". The rotational inertia found in traditional "fixed" maces requires additional effort by the user to overcome and complete the move. So while brass bushings and effortless rotation sounds good from an advertising standpoint, the "effortless" part is actually counter-productive to what the user is trying to achieve in a mace workout to begin with. Maces are NOT Oly bars and do not require the same "tech" found within them...and doing so simply needlessly adds to the cost. So for me, I would LOVE to see Rogue make a fixed version because, well....that's what I'm looking for. My $0.02.
@davidolson7303
@davidolson7303 2 месяца назад
onnit fixed maces are the way to go. You only need a light weight and a heavy weight mace you enjoy. You won't be using maces as a staple in your workouts, and is more suited for a few key excercises and warmups. Maces are generally hard enough to incorporate. The fun part is just grabbing and going. Additionally you don't want that extra width of the weight plate, and it sounds like the weight of the rogue bar itself is too much relative to the weight you place on the end. Seems to be a GIMMICK Loadable maces seem like worse ideas than loadable dumbbells, and we know no one likes loadable dumbbells

I feel bad for people who want to try mace, trust the Rogue brand, and buy this, and then they end up with a product that has features they don’t need and it doesn’t have the characteristics you really want in your first mace. So $225 for 1 exercise that can only be done with a mace? Also seems like there are other exercises that more effectively train those muscles. These sort of pieces of equipment seem gimmicky IMO. A piece of strength equipment that cost more than $100 but only does 1 thing is not for me. That’s because I have limited money and space. If you had tons of money and space then I think going for these 1 offs is ok. A leg press can do 1-3 exercises and costs a lot and sort of meets this criteria of something I’d only buy with a lot of money and space. I’d say drop your money on barbell, plates, dumbbells and kettlebells first.

I don't know if you remember the video well that you linked, but his biggest complaint of the Rogue mace was that it didn't have a hollow handle and the loadable sleeve could be longer for his liking, mainly because he is very strong. Rogue is now making four different Maces, two of which have hollow handles, and the loadable sleeve needing to be longer will only apply to extremely strong individuals. The guy that you linked even said that if those two things were addressed, it would give his own mace a run for its money, a mace that is basically a "short barbell" with a hollow handle, just like two of the rogue models, but with a longer sleeve and carbon steel that will oxidize with time.

DISCLAIMER: Sorry this comment is long but needs to be: I've been working out for the majority of my adult life. I played sports when I was younger, and I have done a multitude of functional dynamic movements as well. I have done all sorts of traditional strength training movements, plyometric movements, sprints, sleds, Olympic lifts, blah blah blah.... basically, all the things a football/track coach would have its athletes do for strength and explosiveness. The only reason I even bring those things up is to show that I know there are tons of useful exercises and equipment when it comes to strength, speed and overall athletic and aesthetic needs. Maces are pure nonsense though. Absolutely pointless. This is just a weird CrossFit style "we have to think up something new for the bored crowd" piece of equipment. It's like in the rocky movie when he's chopping wood during his training. Yes, it can be exhausting, but no one is running to Lowes to buy an axe to get in shape. I love your honesty in your reviews and that's why I watch all your videos, but you pretending this is an actual functional piece of equipment you will use is not honest. You know this will sit in the corner of your gym and NEVER be used. Because it's pointless, and to be honest, probably slightly dangerous. But if Rogue pays you to say good things, I completely understand. I just think you doing "around the world" with a $225 mace and acting like it's a good exercise is absolutely bonkers. Other than that, keep up the great reviews. I have bought multiple pieces of equipment for my home gym based on your recommendations and all have been awesome so far.
