APS-C Shooter? Check out this video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y5JdPQn6uS0.html *Quick Correction from the video: The Sony 85mm GM is a 77mm filter thread, not an 82mm thread.*
Lol 😂 this one would definitely be worth checking out, I know you love the best of the best, this would be a less expensive option than the GM but with similar quality and all the same features.
I know it's not all about subs, but My dawg Dunna is at 110K. I remember stumbling on to your channel about a year ago thinking "this guy should have way more subs." I love your content! Don't stop no matter if the vidz hit or miss. God bless my bro!!!
01:35 As much as I loved tighter focal lengths in Photography. Ever since I started shooting videos. I end up using 85mm for 10-15% shoot And do over 70% of shoot using 50mm focal length with respect to space available and kind of look they both provide. PS - I recently shot music video with story sequence and I hardly took 2-3 shots for 1 sequence with 85mm. What are your views, fellow videographers? And also - I love 85mm and badly wanna have in my kit. I rented 85 for my shoots
Love these review videos. Thanks Dunna. You even answered my question about APS-C!! That was cool. I get total FOMO about full frame when I watch these, but I love my a6600 and I think I do ok with it. Thanks again.
Do more of these!! Out door reviews are the best, I love making them my self. Also with the A7S-iii coming out I think lot of people are looking to move to Sony. So E mount lens reviews should be popular in the 2nd half of 2020.
Interesting! Yeah it does seem like something that could be a little preproduction firmware bug. They are at least aware of it so if it does keep showing up, I’m sure it will get taken care of with production firmware or an update.
Hey man, thanks for the review. Question for you though! Did you notice a lot of distortion in your video with this lens? I know we can fix it in LR for photos, bust just mainly curious about the video. I just got this lens in today for my A7iii and I noticed quite a bit of distortion in my copy... a little too much I feel. Reached out to Sigma and sent them a couple shots, just waiting to hear back from them to see if I need a replacement.
I didn't really notice it being a problem in video, I guess I assumed that there was a built in profile taking care of it but I'm not 100% sure. The distortion is there for sure in photo mode though so there's definitely a possibility that it is also there in video mode if they haven't sorted it with a built in profile.
I noticed lots of problem while shooting with this lens. Distortion when I make some quick pan moves. Also, I have problems with the autofocus while shooting. Like the camera has a hard time to fins the focus point :( Did Sigma answered to you?
This sigma is by far one of the worst portrait lenses ive ever come by. This lens suffers from more DISTROTION than most ultra wide lenses. The chromatic aberration looks like ghosting it is so bad and autofocus is Subpar even compared to entry level Sony lenses. I've owned this lens for almost a year and can't wait to get rid of it. In summary, this sigma is total trash. This is NOT a superior lens compared to the old sigma 85, and even compared to the 6+yr old 85 gmaster.
Thanks for the feedback! Unfortunately I had already put most of this together when I found out that there was so much interest in this lens on aps-c. Maybe another video, another time!
I bought one on Friday and the AF was loud. Loud enough to be heard on the internal mic. I brought it back to B&H today here in NYC and tried another copy. It was the same, so I re-purchased the Sony 85mm 1.8. So frustrating.
Thank you for this excellent vid! Just upgraded to the aa7r5 from the Xt5 and am considering this lens…get rid of that blade coffee grinder. Trash it! Burr grinder for the winnnnnn
It’s going to be really hard for me to part with my Sigma Art 85mm Gen. 1, it’s my go to lens. Definitely liking the size and native to mirror less build.
Love the humour in this one, great video! As an aside, I wouldn't necessarily discount 85mm 1.4 on APSC. It ends up being an equivalent ~128mm ~f/2 which is very close to 135mm f/1.8, which a lot of people love for portraits. Certainly more niche, but still a great option if you have the room to shoot that far away
I own the Sony 85mm f1.4 GM. Bokeh wise it is a beast (best bokeh balls for an 85 IMHO). I'm curious to know how this Sigma compares in that regard, because I am definitely considering the Sigma due to size and weight.
I’ve been using the 85mm lens from Sony the 1.8 one! Got it used for $350 and has been great! Definitely want to look into this one since I would give my wife the old Sony for her portrait photos she takes after her client haircuts so that way I can just let her have it instead of seeing if she needs it or not!
I think I heard you say it, but if this new version is focus by wire and not linear, then I’ll 100% be keeping my older version. I’ll gladly take the weight over having a crappy manual focusing system. Thanks for the in-depth review!

Hi Dunna, Love your vlogs! You gave some great recommendations as far as 85mm lenses. Question, What about the Canon 1.8 version? I’d love your thoughts. Thanks again. 😃
Hi im new to photography planning to buy an 85mm lens and not sure if i'll go for sigma or the sony 1.8.. i use it for posting on facebook, instagram or maybe for printing soon.. almost all reviews show that the new sigma 85mm is sharper and my question is will the sharpness of the sigma still be better and noticeable when i post it on social media even though instagram and facebook have photo compression? Should i save my money and go for more expensive sigma?
It’s a tough call! I’d say that the Sony f1.8 would do the trick for you if you’re just starting out. But if you have the extra money, then the sigma is a solid upgrade and in 3 years you won’t be wishing you had a more “professional” 85mm.
@@dunnadidit not really, but i would prefer a bit more smoother bokeh, the background seems to be more creamy on the sigma 1.4. but i guess no client in the world would even care :D it's only me
Great review, man! It was really informative. And I love the humor too. Quick question, if I were to get my first FF prime lens would you recommend either the Sony 50mm f1.4 or the Sigma 85mm f1.4? I switched from ASP-C to FF earlier this year and I took a different approach to my lens selection. Before on the ASP-C I just stuck with the prime lens (sigma trinity), but when I went to FF, I decided to acquire a variable-zoom lens first. Which has been really nice since for everyday uses and traveling (before covid). I want to get back into portrait photography and do small time side-gigs.
@@dunnadidit Thanks for replying back with your personal input, Dunna! I do recall using Sigma 30mm f1.4 (50mm FF equivalent) more frequently than the 56mm f1.4 (85mm-ish equivalent) back when I was rocking Sony ASP-C. It was bit more versatile and more suited for indoor shootings and tight spaces. That 56mm bokeh and bg separation tho! I'll look into the Zeiss like you recommended. Cheers.
@@CaseyHardman Thanks for sharing your personal experience and recommendation. That's 2/2 for the 50mm equivalent. I'll do more research on which to cop. I wonder if Sigma will release a new and compact 50mm f1.4 like they did for this recent 85mm...hmm
Do both versions of the Sigma 85mm come in L mount for canon ? I have only seen the older version with the L mount. Does the Sigma 85mm F1.4 art DG DN also comes in L mount? I have a canon and i need to know
Hi, where do you find the 56mm f1.4 for $479? (I assume it's Canadian dollar since you're from Edmonton) The cheapest I found is $500 and it's secondhand. I'd highly appreciate if you could recommend good places to buy lens in Canada. Btw, this video is awesome! I'm definitely getting the 85mm f1.4 once I have enough money :)
Hey! Unfortunately I was probably listing the price in USD since most of my viewers are from the US or at least know their approximate conversion to USD. Sorry for the confusion!
I am just here for the video af review .. Because nobody is talking about that... I am a video shooter.. Thats why i am going with the batis.. 85 1.8 ..❤
