I’ve had mine in the stone wash finish for maybe 2 months now and that bit kit is very handy. Love the assisted opening for the 4 tools. At this point with my use the pliers open with a whip of my wrist. Just don’t drop it into any dirt as there’s too many crevices to try to clean (learned the hard way). Nice video!
I just got SOG’s PowerPint a week ago, which is the pocket-sized version of this. It’s roughly the size for a 4-layer 91mm Victorinox. The plier head on it is phenomenal, but I haven’t used the handle tools enough to say much about them yet. The PowerPint is apparently the best in-production model available on the market right now for anyone looking for a Leatherman Juice substitute.
Here in Indiana, the archaic "switchblade" (Auto) law was enacted in 1957. In 2012 the law was ratified to allow automatic knives of all kinds. That opened up a huge worm hole with me lol. I picket up a couple Microtech Ultratech UTX-85 and UTX-70. Love them both! I also picked up a Boker Auto and have many more on my wish list. I hope that NY catches up with the times! Even Californication allows Autos!! Thanks for sharing this with us Chrispy! As always, keep the videos coming! Cheers my Friend! Zip~
I have this one, been about 2 weeks and so far it's better all around than previous sog's. I've had plenty throughout the years and used them proper. The bit driver is the only tool that locks in at 90° and I find that work well for leverage.
The Surge is King! Having said that I own several SOG MT's and can say that the pliers beat everything out there. I have a huge MT collection and primarily carry these for the pliers and bit drivers. I just ordered this one to add to the collection. Thanks for sharing!
Nice, the still use the gear style opening system. I’ve had the same SOG since 2005-2006. Love that gear system. It’s not this particular model and I’ve kept it so long without replacement bc when I thought about doing so, I saw some SOG models that didn’t have the gear system or appeared not to and that caused me to keep the original until the wheels fall off. Very nice other than the length of this model it looks to still hold the same great quality that is the SOG brand. Might go ahead and finally retire my current multi tool now.
One feature of the SOG multipliers that often gets overlooked is that you can actually use the pliers and wirecutters without fully opening the tool (that is, with the jaws still between the arms). Admittedly the need for that is not a common occurrence, but...
I have an old SOG Powerlock, it's over 20 years old now and still works as well as the day I bought it. The Powerlock that I got and a lot of the older SOG MT systems came with a leather sheath that snapped closed. I am looking into replacing the worn combo blade with a new straight blade.
Regarding pliers, I believe that it's Leatherman & Victorinox > SOG & Gerber; but I give points for these later two because they have these interesting design ideas that may be better for some people.
This was a first impressions video not really a review. So any mistakes that I mentioned in the video are just me looking at it for the first time. Thanks for watching!
I hit fuck it & brought one, i'm also going to modify it a little bit by adding scissors & a 3 edge file as well as the new addition of the Leatherman ratchet.
I was looking at the SOG pretty recently, and it looked interesting. Does it really have a ratcheting bit driver? If so, that's awesome! I'm looking forward to your full review of that hefty beast.
@@ChrispyThings How is it that there aren't other companies making a bit ratcheting extension like Leatherman? 30 bucks for their's is pretty steep. Ordered up a Powerpint, and a ratcheting extension would complete the package.
Considering the weight and bulk I think I would probably stay with my Surge but I will have to see the other tools first. Not a big fan of strap cutting hooks. I've never had a use for one. Space may have been better utilized for a more useful tool. Just my first impression of the tool. Definitely will be taking a closer look at this one though. I purchased one of the first leatherman tools brought to market and own almost every model they make but I'm always looking for anything better. No luck with that so far lol. Great vid, looking forward to hearing your thoughts once you get to use it. I have never had much luck with SOG tools in the past. Let's see if they've upped their game with this offering.
Hey community, I have used my SOG PowerAcces Assist for a month now. It keeps misfiring and the blades will bounce back from the lock onto my fingers. I've tried oil and adjusting the pivot screws, nothing seems to work. Any tips?
Hi, thank you for this interesting video! But it surprised me when you said the assisted opening blades are banned when (I believe) the guns are legal in the USA.. Greetings from Switzerland 🙂
They’re banned in some states. Here in NY, you camera carry them unless you have a hunting out fishing license. Same as guns. I can’t carry a fire arm without one either.
Chris can you review the SOG Triton key chain? Just received it and it’s really great. It has a small blade for opening boxes and a bottle opener, the key ring opens half circle for easy adding and removing keys.
I bought it for the bit driver (I wish it had an insulation cutyer/remover (cablecutter) then it would be perfect) I bought it for work. If I carried it on my person at all times, then maybe it's a bit too heavy.
Thanks for this wonderful upload, I notice the link on your on your description on where we can purchase it so I click on it and the SOG website reads stoned wash but your vid looks like it black oxide. Maybe my eyes deceive me?
This looks like a nice tool overall, but with its 5Cr15MoV blade, I think that I’d still lean toward a Leatherman since their multitools give you the possibility of opting for 154CM or even S30V (in some cases).
I switched back to my Leatherman after a month. I basically keep this as a back up in my car. It’s cool and nothing really wrong with it other than size and weight.
Hey, so I'd love a update & in-depth review as I'm looking for a new multitool & love the sound of this, I'm military & was wondering if this could withstand field conditions.
This tool looks sweet. Screw your state’s laws. I’m in California and I carry whatever I want. I encourage everyone I meet to do the same. The government has no right to tell you what tools you can or can’t carry. Pack that tool and let us know how it does! If it’s good get your friends, family, and co-workers to carry it too!
As much as I hate my states laws telling me what I can or can’t carry, I hate paying fines and getting my tools taken away from me more. I’m still gonna carry this tool at work though!
I agree but don't by that one handed Leatherman. It breaks fast mine lasted a day cutting wire. Supertool 300, Wave or the best tool the Surge with bit kit and extra saw blades kicks the crop out of any multitool and that includes Victorinox. I've had them all
Assisted hook cutting should have been replace with a file. While the Assisted hook should be replace the adapter. Its redundant to have two inserts for the quarter inch bits.
@@ChrispyThings Great vid. The promotional video SOG has out for this mt shows the user opening the pliers one handed. Almost looks like butterfly knife action to me. The pliers on the Gerber direct drive will open with one hand once they've gotten just a little broken in. Glad I saw your video as I was just about to pull the trigger on this tool. Maybe I should consider Leatherman first.
@@ChrispyThings actually you can with the compound leverage, just need to practice the swing / flip and also depending how smooth is the compound leverage. i can swing it open on my old powerassist.
@@ChrispyThings if I heard you right your in NY. The laws state an auto meaning you don't need to start the blade first, you just trigger it with a button or other mechanism is illegal. Other things too. Dirk's daggers sword canes. But assisted doesn't fall under those so it's not illegal.
“Will it replace my Free P4?” I traded my P4 for an OHT and only mildly regret that decision. I would NEVER trade my Free T4 off, as I love that tool. As for the SOG tools, I don’t see them as replacements to my Leatherman. I see them as capable tools in their own right.
You obviously don't know what you're talking about. The Wave is a piece of junk, nowhere near a good multitool. Here's why. The Wave has almost unusable medium flat screwdriver and Phillips screwdriver, since their adaptor is too wide and too short. The scissors rather belong in a manicure than in a multitool because they can easily be substituted by the knife in most cases. The ruler is almost illegible on the Wave, whereas on the Rebar it's excellent. The pliers are much wider and better to use in the Rebar, while the needle nose crap in the Wave is unstable and too narrow. In general, the Rebar is much steadier and efficient. I also highly appreciate the Rebar's awl, which is completely missing in the Wave. The Wave is more fashionable than usable. The Leatherman Free is a total fiasco. It has the stupidest design ever, totally wasting space. No ruler on the scales, just an absolutely useless pattern on them and a "depth gauge" inside that's too short to be usable. The file is microscopic and totally unusable. If you understood multitools at least a little, you'd prefer the Rebar or the Super Tool 300, or even a 1990s' SOG Power Plier that's totally stuffed with useful tools that can hardly be found in multitools nowadays. By the way, don't say S.O.G. It's SOG [sog]. Just call them - the first you're going to hear when they answer the phone is: "SOG Specialty Knives" You should rather find some other hobby that you may understand better. Multitools are obviously none of your strong points.
