Hey Hunters,
I got the absolute privilege of running round Stonehenge at 7am last week! I was filming a presenting job for English Heritage, check out their Tiktok to see the finished vids!
In this vlog I show you up close the ancient stone circle and chat all theories about how they were made and why the henge was created! Including a NEW theory I'd never heard before that may explain both how the stones were moved AND why it was made.
Disclaimer -
The Theories in this video are NOT endorsed by English Heritage, if you would like to read more about the history of Stonehenge click here 👇

I'm a design engineer, and I think Stevens' machine would work just as well, and be a lot simpler, if you got rid of the turntable and just put a sliding counterweight near the center. If the loaded beam is close to being balanced, you only have to shift the CG (center of gravity) a couple of feet (a meter or so) to unload one foot and then back again to unload the other foot.

Doesn't answer how u get a stone slab that massive to lay on that contraption it the first place before you can even to position it. Also doesn't answer how they laid slabs horizontally on top of two vertical slabs. That contraption is cute but that's all it is

If you had multiples of those devices spaced the length of the stone the people on each side could lever up the crossbarto move it forward. No need for two feet under it, just a central on under the crossbar. But, if rhey could do that, why not just use wheels and axles?

I did a recreation of Stonehenge on the UTPB campus in west Texas in 2004. My studies from that time led me to believe Stonehenge was originally a farmers calendar that then became a ceremonial party place for the Druids. I’d be happy to give a longer explanation of how we made a full scale astronomically correct replica if you are interested.

Cool trip to stonehenge, what a treat, getting in there early before the crowds! 11:22 you can see the issues with this machine. It's an interesting idea, but just not plausible at scale. 1) you need to counterbalance the weight when it rotates, else the whole contraption would just tip over, as it nearly does in the footage at that point. They had a small enough weight that a person pushing down on the other end could counterbalance it. this counterbalance would need to be added and removed each time after you rotate the lever, as otherwise it wouldn't lighten one of the 'feet' in order to pivot the whole thing (which isn't plausible with large loads either, it would just drill down into the ground... you'd probably need bearings for that rotation also...) And the big issue is 2) all that weight is hanging off the end of a long lever. What exactly is that lever/boom made from? it would need to be incredibly rigid or strong enough not to just snap with a 10 ton load, let alone 100, or 1000... The swinging lever actually needs to support double the weight of whatever you are trying to move with the counterbalance. Every time you attempt this rotation you need to counterbalance the lever on the other side - as you can see him doing in by hand in the later demonstrations when he reduces the weight to make it more manageable. It would also need to be a tremendously strong pivot point.

Stonehenge is probably what it looks like. Stones dragged for miles, aligned and propped up with humans muscles. The mystery is why those particular stones, why that location, how they worked out the alignments, and for what purpose.

Ben is right, you'd need to extend the lever like a slide ruler, or stack one on top of the other with a counterbalance on the other end, then change the pivot point to gain headway...

@@Foxglove963 There's a difference between engineering and being high tech. The wheel was considered advanced technology when it was invented. It's far more likely that some form of technology was used to move those rocks that was a little more advanced than some men and ropes. Literally nobody on this channel believes in magic. In ancient times, plants we know today to have medicinal properties were considered witchcraft to touch. Medicine was seen as magic potions. Ailments were caused by witches. You had to scream at the sky so the sun would come back after every eclipse. People decided ordinary things were magical. Sorry you believe that you think all ancient civilizations were working with bone and rock tools and unable to figure out how to invent ways to move large blocks of stone in ways that seemed like magic in later retellings.

The problem I have with this machine as ingenious that it’s is, it’s way more complicated than the simple wheel. It’s over engineered for the job. Most likely the stones from Stone Henge were dragged with heavy sleds and a lot of people.
@JayIngemar
@JayIngemar 2 года назад
But it’s so weird that it’s more or less a blueprint for this mans machine. The giants in the story of Merlin could very well be this type of contraption scaled up to an enormous size. Another commenter also said that this machine could be simplified with some counterweight solution instead of the whole rotation thing.
@midgetydeath
@midgetydeath 2 года назад
There is no evidence of any kind supporting your statement. And the weight of the stones and the terrain from where they came from makes dragging or wheels either extremely unlikely or unfeasible. Why is it so hard to believe ancient people were not stupid? Why do modern folks struggle to attribute any creativity or engineering capability to anyone less advanced than ourselves? When humans have a job to do, they figure out ways to do it and then improve upon it over time. Such as the numerous sites near stonehenge this video touched on. We didn’t spend hundreds of thousands of years doing nothing.
@craigthescott5074
@craigthescott5074 2 года назад
@@midgetydeath there’s no evidence either way how they did it. The bottom line is they did it but most likely Occam’s Razor explains this process. The most simple solution is usually what explains what happened. They either dragged the stones with sleds and rollers or they had the wheel.

I've always suspected the stones were brought most of the way if not all through glaciation as Salisbury is located South east of the point in Wales they came from especially as the blues are on a mountain top just ripe to be plucked by a passing river or solid ice carried down the valleys into Wiltshire the same route the river seven takes but on a much grander scale.
@Foxglove963
@Foxglove963 3 года назад
BUSHCRAFT AND FISHING WITH THE PIKEY. The bluestones were NOT brought, dressed and cut to size, by glacial action. In between Prescelly and Stonehenge no bluestone is found. The bluestones definitely came from Prescelly, in all likelyhood the stones were put on a sledge for transportation. Sledges were known and used, this was so already in the Neolithic.

Thank you! That was really cool to see! The part I don't get about any of these ancient tech sites is... if you are smart enough to do all that... how the heck do you not have wheels yet? I know my mind is prejudiced here because I saw wheels when I was a baby, so they seem natural to the world in a way, but I have also made some crafts before, and the way the mind comes up with solutions through working on problems seems pretty fundamental to humans. So, when working at such lengths and coming up with such complex contraptions that use arcs and circles and rotation and even bearings... why not wheels? I am genuinely curious.
@annab13

Much of the ancient tech has been hidden, like our origins. Recent things I've read about were da Vinci's sketches, they had a single wheel vehicle that was superior to the 4 wheels we travel on for being more economical and smooth, electric cars were killed for the oil tycoons, etc.. everytime they make a discovery of humans ancient history, they destroy and hide it.

Would the stone walking contraption having a Wheel make the invention of the wheel much older then first imagined? When you think about it if early man was using rollers or little steel balls to move things then they'd have to have known about wheels, I mean what is a Roller if not a long wheel? Being a primitive human doesn't necessarily mean they were stupid, Our ancestors managed to survive long enough to have had children for us to have followed on from them, They certainly had more fulfilling lives and togetherness then we have today.

Thank you for a very interesting video, the walking the stones machine seems very implausible although a great idea. What happens when you come across the stream gully or brook big river and uneven ground which you would. Surely the stone balls would constantly crush to powder under the weight and the counterbalance would be so difficult to swing around as somebody pointed out in one of the other comments. However it's nice to see somebody engaging a few brain cells and coming up with a thesis. Keep up the good work there.

Merlin & Arthur always seem placed somewhere in the early 'Dark Ages,' though film/TV always seem to cast them in the nascent Middle Ages - 'Arthur of the Britons' being the notable exception to this rule. My theory is that they built these ancient sites to keep track of the constellations and seasons to detect future cataclysmic events. Read “The Adam and Eva Story” by Chan Thomas. As far as the engineering and true timeline of civilization will be anyone’s guess. But all major sites across the world were built to withstand seismic activity and aligned with stars, constellations, and the solstices.

A very cool, and at the same time, quite simple and ingenious idea. That makes it very likely, or at least, something like this. Even if for the long distances there was another way to move the heavy stones, this makes placing them precisely much more realistic.

Really interesting Video and many thanks for making and posting:) Going off slightly on a tangent, and thank you for your patience, while I go off on one:) Stonehenge and all the surrounding structures where built to re-enforce British pride in being Ancient British (Celtic) in the face of peoples coming to our shores from mainland Europe. Like we Brit's can do this, this is our land and our heritage. Of course in much later centuries the Romans invaded as well, which diluted our original Celtic identity even more, but only for about 400 years:- To wax lyrical for a moment:- Barbarians were hammering on the gates of Rome, and the once mighty Empire was collapsing in disarray. Hastily and frantically, the once powerful legions were recalled from far flung outposts to defend their motherland in a bitter fight to save and restore the glory that, had once been Rome. It was around 400A.D. when they let loose their grip on Britain, abandoning the culture they had imposed on most of the island of Britain, for over four hundred years. At roughly the same time, raiders from across the North Sea were already steering a course that was to unleash brutal havoc on the confused people of this country. A period of darkness descended upon this land and it's people's; and for several hundred years this "Dark Age" lay like a shroud over recorded history, only giving occasional glimpses of the grim fighting, barbaric horrors and eerie mysteries of the time. Amongst the more mysterious people in those distant days were the Druids; the strange priests of a cult that thrived amongst the Celtic peoples of Gaul and Britain. Since the beginnings of their history (which were long, long before any Roman set foot in Britain), they had a strong and mystic influence over their followers. They were scholars, early scientists, men of medicine, extraordinary astrologers and astronomers, who held the secret keys to all religious rituals and doctrines. The Druids were said to be masters of the worlds oldest religion; a form of Shamanism (Similar in some respects to Hinduism and the ancient religion of Tibet, called Bon), and preservers of the hidden esoteric secrets and hidden pre-history of Atlantis, only known to the highest initiates. Understandably, they were what might be described as Magicians and Wizards, and there is little doubt they displayed powers that would mystify us even today. But of all their mysteries, one was more commonplace than any. Since the start of their very long history, which stretched into the thousands of years B.C., they were renowned for what was called the "An-da-shealladh". The gift of the two sights, and the ability to see into the future. Most famous of the Druids (at least in the most recent of Druidaic history), and most uncanny prophet of them all was Abrosius Merlin. Merlin! His name must be known by millions, his reputation bound forever with that of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. At sometime every schoolboy and girl must have read the tales of these legendary figures and how the great magician aided Arthur in so many ways.
