The way you guys described the feel of the GT and compared its tone with the GS Mini makes me want to sell my GS Mini and get a GT. The GT makes the GS Mini sound boxy in comparison. Oh, and Cooper's monstrous playing is always a pleasure to listen to.

A GT with a cedar or koa top would be superb. I seriously consider buying a GT with spruce / urban ash right off the bat. It feels like it’s just big enough to be seen as a guitar that’s not only made for travelling and for younger people. Also, as in this comparison I felt like the GT had a bit more depth in tone. When it comes to money, though...the Gs mini will probably always be the best bang for the buck when it comes to Taylor guitars. Great video, guys! Maybe comparison played by Chris would help to differentiate the guitars more from one another.

I’ve finally decided to make the step back into guitar playing after 10 years away from it. I went into the local GC yesterday to test out the 000 Martin body style with the intent of purchasing the Martin 000-13e soon. In between guitars (compared dreadnaught to 000 primarily), I picked up this Taylor GT and absolutely loved how it felt and played. I’m torn between the Martin 000-13e and Taylor GT and would appreciate any comparative input for these two pieces!

There is no question the guitar playing was phenomenal. But the problem is it doesn’t really showcase the guitar for the average player. You need to make the demo more accessible by doing some simple fingerpicking and strumming techniques. Also, the assertion that the GS-mini is not a “serious” guitar is absurd, I’ve been playing and recording for over 40 years and I can tell you it sounds just fine in the studio in the right hands. Honestly, I certainly didn’t hear enough of a difference between the two (likely because of the style of the demo) to justify the additional cost and make me want to add one to my collection. Better luck next time guys.

I'm seriously interested. I've been hoping Taylor would come out with something more analogous to the AD series but in something closer to a Grand Concert body size. The GT might be just the ticket. I also love the fact that they're using a nontraditional wood for the back and sides, apparently to great effect. I'd be interested to know whether this body style would work well in maple, too.

Just a couple of comments. Cooper - fantastic technique but those highly percussive tunes with stops and mutes make it hard to really hear the tone, sustain, projection, etd. Simpler finger picking would have been nice. With these comps I really can't hear much difference between the two guitars. Also, I would like to hear the pickup systems compared. Of course it's going to sound better, but what are you using it for? The mid range and lows are very obviously bigger. You can Almost feel the difference in string tension. This actually looks like the ideal guitar for me. My arthritis has kick the crap out of my hands, and as much as I enjoyed the grand concert and double O size guitars, I need something with a little narrower nut, And this looks like it would fit the bill. For comfort, I absolutely loved my 1965 epiphone ft-45 But this sounds like it has a much bigger sound. I've always said, go for comfort first, and sound second. Of course you want a great sounding guitar, but if it's extremely difficult to play, he will take it out and show everybody how wonderful it sounds and never play it. You have to want to play a guitar and comfortable good sounding guitars make you want to play.

If all the structural features of the GT is to bring as much sound as possible out of its small body then why couldn’t they do that for the GS mini? I’m not sure how the size of the GS mini would restrict the volume if all that construction of the GT is designed to get more volume out of it.

I think it’s a glorified gs mini at $1499. It’s nice sounding for sure and very comfortable but for just a little bigger scale (but by not much) I think it isn’t worth that $1499. Especially when they are saving $$ by using trees (common trees) found throughout CA that are already going to get cutdown anyways. I say this guitar priced at $1299 would of been better imo.

Definitely a good move by Taylor, the GT sounds great and seems to fill a niche in the market; the two guitars are different enough that the new model won't affect sales of the GS Mini or make it obsolete by any means. Listening to the two side by side, it's amazing how full the GS Mini still sounds considering its size. As always, thanks for a great presentation and comparison. While Cooper's playing is virtuosic, there is too much going on with the fingers and the style including a lot of string muting. This does not really show the depth/fullness of tone of either guitar. In my opinion Koa Plus > GT. I just got back from trying these at the store. The Koa Plus sounds incredible: the bass tone is full and warm, warmer than the GT, The Koa plus sounds like a full sized guitar to me, but it does seem to lack overtones and sustain compared to the GT or a full size (was hard to discern as well over the faint air/humidifier noise), although I would actually prefer this since my maple 614e has tons of overtones and sometimes I want them to shut up lol - just depends on the song/style. I could also feel the K+ resonate against my body. The K+ defied expectations, while the GT sounded like what you'd expect from a slightly smaller than full sized guitar. Another difference (although this could change with action / string choice) was the GT was slightly slinkier (easier to bend) than the mini because by defualt the string tension is less. But the K+ I played also felt like the action was a little too high. One thing I liked better about the GT was that it was easier to find the sweet spot in tone/volume when resting my wrist on the strings for a semi palm muted sound when flat picking. On the K+ I found it easy to have too much palm resting on the strings and dampening the sound too much, but maybe with practice this would be overcome; on the positive side, since the K+ is more punchy and has less sustain anyways, even if I erred on less palm I could still get a percussive sound that didn't bleed. To my ears the K+ definitely sounds better than the other mini varients. I don't know the specs as to what's different, but its night and day difference to me - the bass tone on the K+ is amazing. I don't mean that it's overpowering - the EQ across strings was just right. Harder to say for the GT since I found it's bass to be brighter. I didn't try the GT plugged in. The K+ plugged in sounded fine, nothing to write home about - the higher the volume the more of that metalic zing there is with basically all amped acoustics. Not sure how it compared to the regular minis plugged in.

That is not the type of playing that helps in distinguishing the difference in sound between two guitars. Simple strumming, shorter simple melodic passages A-B’ed against each other would have been much better for the supposed purpose of this video. Goes without saying, the guitarist is skilled but there’s a time and a place for that type of playing.

As many have stated before me, the way Cooper is playing, it makes it difficult to hear the difference. However, one thing that surprised me was the fact that the Mini can truly hold its own. I have a Mini and I would like to tell those who've never played one; when people infer that the Mini is a guitar for small people, it's not really true. It's for small, medium, and large people alike. I have fairly large hands and I have no problem negotiating the fretboard.

A $3,000 Taylor is an excellent guitar so is a $3,000 Matin, Larrivee or Lowden but for $500 bucks nothing comes close to the GS mini I want to see a hog top GT!

I appreciate the demo, but there is a painful amount of talking in this video. Sum it up, and get to the actual demo. 12 1/2 minutes of nothing but talking, I couldn’t take it anymore.

I wish in demos young guitarist would not so much Flex their licks but show more sustain and let the strings be heard for the average guitar player who would be buying these lower model ones. If I would want to hear speed, lets have Al Dimeola demonstrate his lighting licks. Have a little more James taylor or Dan Fogelberg play and more travis pick on these badboys. There was a smoother glide over the Mini on the guitarmans licks.

Seems like GT is an amazing guitar. Also nice to see how cool a GS Mini can be in Cooper's hands. I bought a GS Mini as my first guitar about a month ago and still absolutely love it. I remember playing different instruments in a shop and when I picked up GS Mini and strummed the first chord (yes, I already new some tricks) I was just blown away. I immediately thought to myself: "Wow, this it it!". Now I know much more about guitars, but I still want that feeling of instrument speaking to me if I ever buy a new one. Maybe it's going to be a GT, who knows.

Hmmm. ? I can't really tell the difference sound wise ? Maybe my PC speakers aren't good enough? Or my ear isn't that well trained. Think I'll keep my GS MIni KOA for now.
@ermanngies1914

Don't worry, that's completely normal. RU-vid compresses sound like crazy, something like 20 kbps for sound only. The differences will be minor even between a 1960 Martin dreadnought and a small parlor if recorded the same way.

Wow, my 2 main interests in this video (1) you both holding the guitars side by side for a size visual comparison and (2) switching back and fourth between both guitars during Coopers playing. Honestly in this video I felt there is minimal difference. I'm a huge Taylor fan and have always thought the GS-Mini stood alone against all other competition, so the thought of the all solid GT got me super excited, however Taylor was able to make the GS-Mini layered sides/back sound as good as many all solid guitars. I commented on your first video thinking the GT may compete too much with the GS-Mini, but honestly I dont think so based on this video. I'll need to test one in person to confirm. That doesnt mean I will never get a GT, but it means my GS-Mini(s) remain absolute best bang for the buck when it comes to build, feel, and sound (short of my McPherson CF Touring)! Cant wait to watch all the other comparison videos that will surely flood RU-vid soon.

I have a GS mini The head stock looks kind of cheap but really the ONLY negative of the GS mini in my mind is the 1-11/16 hut width can be a little cramped. Though he doesn't seem to mind.

@@thenextgeneracion4963 Can't speak for the other user, but as someone with slender hands who's always had a hard time barring chords, the GS Mini's nut width is fantastic (and one of the main reasons that made me go for that model). Of course it all depends on what you are looking for specifically, but both in terms of playability and sound, the GS Mini is probably the best bang for your buck!

The GT is great, it is it twice the price great? Of course not. The popularity of GS Mini is in its great value proposition. At 1500, why not compare to Yamaha AC5 or a Martin D16? And how is blistering fast runs going to show us sonic differences. How about playing an actual chord, strumming a few bars, or playing a few things to compare them, sure it sounds like it projects more, but we are talking about a 1500 guitar. I like that it is smaller. But GS Mini has a tuner built in and a record of a decade. It feels weird comparing these, I’d ho GS Mini since GT is so damned expensive. If it were 350 bucks more, I’d get the comparison, But twice the price! You guys smoking crack!?

JUST FOR RHE RECORD, anybody that plays a Taylor GS Mini knows just HOW INCREDIBLE it sounds. I wonder why Taylor sold a jillion of them??? Maybe because they are phenomenal. Baby Taylor, GS mini, Big Baby Taylor, Academy Series and now a GT?? It sounds like they’re getting a little carried away.

First of all sweet playing! I just want to say that GS mini has fuller punchier tone. Im not sure if it's because it has medium strings. The GT is more rounded & trebly. Im now inclined to try the GT. Thanks for the comparison video.

Cooper's def got chops and the licks are dope but they do not really lend themselves to a good evaluation of the guitars. Chris's usual demo's are better for that.

i got the GT mahogany. It really sucks. It's so uncomfortable and odd,. It's like the barney rubble of guitars.. If you decide to get one test it out first. I bought mine online from a a big online retailer (not alamo). I'd send it back but they wat $450 to restock. So, I might use it as a bat for softball league or for firewood. I haven't decided. $1800 down the tubes.

Cooper’s playing is terrific, but I would have much rather heard an A/B of some “normal” songs with a lot less going on to hear the differences in these 2 guitars. The staccato finger style and super quick changes made the focus be in the playing and not the guitar.

Taylor created a monster with the GS - punches so far above its weight. In the hands of a great guitarist - like here - the GT is not significantly better. Maybe the GT would be better for playing unamplified in a bigger coffee shop?
