One from the archive! Great video, with all the great trivia that Tony always adds! And it's raining! RAIN!! The Scottish people lament it...The English claim they own it...and being from California, I just love it!!! It rarely rains where I'm from, so a long walk in the rain is just heaven to me at times. A few points: - Princes Street was originally to have been name St. Giles Street until the King James III suggested the name change as the latter reminded his of an unsavoury part of London. (Today there is a (very short) St. Giles Street running between the top of the mound (i.e., the bank) to the News Steps in the Old Town.) - The princes of Princes Street were the future King George IV (there is George IV bridge in Edinburgh Old Town) and the Duke of York (the nursery rhyme 'The Grand Old Duke of York' is about him). The first buildings in the New Town were - and remain - a semi-detached house at 1 & 2 Thistle Court, at the St. Andrews Square end of Thistle Street. - At the opposite end of Thistle Street (i.e., Charlotte Square) on Young Street (sections of Thistle Street have different names) it the Oxford Bar, which is to Ian Rankin/Inspector Rebus fans what the Elephant House is to Harry Potter fans. Only the Oxford is much quieter...an authentic bar. - Yes, the James Craig plan for the New Town was the winner. But it was deemed unsuitable as was for investing in and others might seek to improve upon it. So others provided modifications, as did Craig whose revised plan was ultimately put to use. He had other plans including one with a circus at the junction of Frederick and George streets, though this was deemed unnecessary. Other Craig initiatives included the Physicians Hall on George Street (long gone) and St. James Square, much of which was demolished in the early 70s for a shopping mall which itself was demolished and replaced by the current St. James Quarter. (Interestingly, St. James Quarter is the neighbourhood from Charlotte Square to Leith Street, though the mall has assumed that name. In a police report it is referred to St. James Crescent, which makes much more sense.) Beyond Charlotte Square and down the hill below Queen Street the New Town is a whole other world of Edinburgh that so many visitors miss out on. Anyone who thinks that Edinburgh is the Old Town and Princes Street will be denying themselves the opportunity to experience a whole other world within the centre of this fantastic city that is Edinburgh.

I had a stay of 4 nights. I love Edinburgh, specially the Old City. Surely I'll be back. Your vídeos helped me a lot. I'm going to recommend to my friends. Maybe next year I'll be there again with some collegues and my students. Once again, thank very much .

Tony, can you have word with the city council about renaming George St! Perhaps King George St? As a regular festival goer , myself, my son and several people I know have had a problem during the fringe of booking tickets for events thinking the show was at George Square only to find out at the last minute that we have to leg it across town to get to George St. Not the easiest journey, especially during the evening. My son queued at the wrong place and realised too late to get to the correct venue. I've abandoned one show half way through in order to get back across the city. The simplest way round would be to rename one of the locations and George St is "newest" so that should be the one. I know you have the right amount of influence to pull it off!!
