I’ve tried to get behind them but it’s really such an ugly look and it kinda ruins the ability to have cool looking ships anytime during or after this century. Discovery has had so many chances to be great and they just can’t figure out how to make trek feel new. It’s interesting how good strange new worlds is. I couldn’t stand Spock in discovery but under the SNW team Ethan great. I would love to see burnahm on a 5 year mission instead of getting traumatized and fighting galaxy ending threat after another

Not a fan of the separated nacelles. If there is a power loss, the nacelles would just float away in space. And as we all know in battle there are times when ships loose power and keeping the nacelles connected (by metal) would give them time to reboot the power without loosing nacelles. So why do it? Just to look cool? I wonder if the EMH of an updated Doctor program is still on board.

I could not disagree more, that’s making the assumption that it’s connected by something like an electromagnet and that loosing power effects the connection. I think you’re thinking to small, this is 900 years into the already future. Who says the connection can’t be invisible but still permanent. Maybe whatever materials they’re using in the nacelle construction is naturally super magnetic, they’ve found a way to extend the natural forces that keeps atoms together to a macroscopic level, some sort of subspace deformation or gravitational effect, cosmic string, idk. Or have we seen the Voyager J lose power, maybe they do connect. We see the Discovery’s switch between modes, maybe there is some sort of emergency failsafe that if power cuts programable matter automatically forms between them. But that’s the great thing about science fiction, it’s sparks imagination and thought, just saying that impossible/impractical is so boring. 🤷‍♂️

I found all the space ship designs for Discovery's future somewhat retro looking. Paramount has been so busy making prequels that we never get to witness new possibilities, new generations of progress, whether technological or artistic. Maybe the pared down look (though just a simplified, dimensionally identical copy of Voyager) is meant to convey how common place and mundane the notion of space travel has become in the far future. I get this feeling especially with regard to Booker's ship, which almost looks like an ordinary building that can fly. It's interesting that Osira's one demand when parlaying the federation was for it to accept capitalism, so one can't help but compare this to the profane designs of ships in the century depicted.

The Wedge Shaped Ring at the back is actually a scaffolding to assemble things outside. They deliver materials from the Shuttlebay, and then assembled them there. Remember, even in the original Voyager TV series, they managed to build the Delta Flyer. It is like Macross 7's Three Star Factory Colony Ship's Long Boom at the back. In the Macross Dynamite 7 OVA series, it was used to assemble a new Battle 7 transformable carrier ship, because the previous one was destroyed at the end of the Macross 7 TV series. We haven't seen enough of the technology in Discovery or have the characters discuss the designs flaw with detached nacelles. For all we know the nacelles and secondary hull maybe designed to to automatically create a physical connection with the hull in case of a rapid power loos or severe damage from an attack. What we need is an episode from Discovery showing the pros and cons of a detached structures on starships and not just dialogue between characters about the benefits or downsides of this tech 32nd century tech.

Imo opinion the curved hollow at the rear of the vessel is a shuttle portal. Fly Into it from the top and it phases the vessel into the bay. Fly into the portal gate inside the bay and it reemerges coming out of the hollow from below. No need to physically open the shuttle bay doors to load or ubload. I'm assuming the same tech exists inside the ship to allow passengers to pass from the primary to secondary hulls instantaneously simply walking down a corridor without relying on internal transporters.
@linz8291
@linz8291 2 месяца назад
I've think about the similar aspects - transporter and space delivering systems. Same opinion on if opening inner transporter control equipment, there is unnecessary to open the shuttle doors, whether to the quantum tunneling system or laser beam as portal methods.

I don't know. I think the original design looks much better. That flat secondary hull looks very strange to me and the more angular less organic shape also doesn't lend itself aesthetically either. Does it look more futuristic? Yes. Otherwise, there would have been a better way to update this look and bring it into the 32nd century. It isn't horrible mind you, it just seems to call attention to itself in non-flattering ways. I agree the detached nacelles seem a little strange but they aren't the biggest part what could have been improved to me. The list goes on and on an on. Oh, and in clasic treck, the ability to scan weapons signitures predates the launch of the discovery, as the NX01 could do it. But Discovery couldn't in episode one. Maybe Voyager J will carry on the proud legacy of the Delta Quadrant in a new series and we get to see updates of the original Voyager's impact there.

I hate those ships with no pylons within the sales just float or just floating where the pylons cloaked

If our science fiction is remembered in the next centuries, people will probably laugh heartily at our concepts of interstellar spaceships as much as we laugh at old Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers serials' rockets. Making them look like spscegoing airplanes or maritime ships may be cool for entertainment but is also utterly irrealist scientifically. Not only our own real spaceships and space probes are very different, but every alleged alien spaceship or UFO ever sighted is too. Not one resembles any ship of any race ever shown in Star Trek or Star Wars or Galactica or any other movie or show (except for the "Forbidden Planet"'s cruiser and "Lost in Space" 's Jupiter II. We might as well use those designs in the movies and TV for a change.

I truly dislike the parts of the ship that aren’t attached…..it just looks stupid to me

The separated...elements is the stupidest thing they could have done to a ship design. Right up there with that Spore Drive nonsense. Which is why this ship belongs more in a sci-fantasy series rather than a sci-fi series.

that shape reminds me of the newer Zumwalt Class naval ships that in a few months will be decommissioned and heading to the scrap yard after only a few years in service because 1 they sucked at being " STEALTH" 2 they kept failing sea trials and they were overpriced paperweights.. this new voyager 1 word BLAH ( but thats my opinion )

What I always find cringeworthy is how people speak of "old" ships vom the 24th century and then they talk about 32th century or what. Guys, nothing here is old. Most of these ship designs are not canon, they are from video games, children shows and discovery (which is kind of a children show).

I don't like USS Voyager J and I don't think it is the future of Startrek ships. It is not possible for a design that has aged very well to damage it.

Discovery really added allot of fantasy into the 31st century stuff that is unbecoming of star trek. Star trek in the past went out of its way to explain stuff like this and there was some logic in it. Discovery does not do this, the choices they made and the writing is just bad.

Sorry, I will always prefer the original Intrepid Class Voyager. The J is shiny, but it will always be an imitation. Call me a hopeless romantic for the classics.

so I know there was a Enterprise J from Strak Trek Enterprise but that made more sense because there was already an enterprise-E by the time voyager got home, how the hell did the voyager get to "J" so fast and catchup. Did they just destroy voyager ships left and right lol

Really dislike detached nacelles. It just comes of a childish design and unnecessary.

Hate to say this guys, but it looks absolutely terrible. It looks like someones retextured a poorly 3D modelled zip. There's no way that people would forget that the Voyager, the famous ship that literally everyone was talking about after their crazy journey back, was an Intrepid class ship. That would be like forgetting that Picard had a Galaxy class ship. Seems to me that the callback was more important than existing naming convention, which is a pretty small gripe.

@HN It looks like you're trying to insult me but I don't think you've worked it out just yet. You should ask someone to teach you or for some advice for it because you're not doing too well. In fact, I'll feel bad if I don't help out. A good start is to say something that will hurt the other person, you're "Don't quit your day job." is a bit out dated and isn't really connected to anything; maybe based on your own ignorance but that's not really something we want to use when you're insulting someone else. That's like punching yourself in the face during a boxing match. You've got to actually do something worth while; just now all you're doing is throwing things at the wall and hoping it sticks and that's something people usually grow out of, because of it's clear ineffectiveness. Look at your comment for example, if I wanted to insult you I could look at that and see how unconnected it is from everything and that you're gambling on it landing. In response to that I could say something like "that's sounding a bit like projection there, I can see why you're struggling with work given how incompetently you communicate." or "that's probably the most relevent and interesting you've felt for a long time."; or I could look at your display pic and mention how your ability to insult is on par with your ability to give good financial advice. Thanks stranger, I found that vaguely entertaining. Enjoy the dopamine hit from getting a reply notification; I'll give you that reward.
