The New ZENITH Chronomaster Sport (is not a Daytona)

A Discussion around the Zenith Chronomaster Sport. It is a watch that is being compared to the Modern Rolex Daytona but apart from the ceramic bezel similarity, this new release is entirely true to the El Primero design identity. Taking inspiration from the A386 and adapting the Chonomaster 50th anniversary's 1/10th of a second complication into a mainstream package. A watch that exhibits a step into modernity while not compromising its design intentions and showing us the further potential of a daily wearing chronograph.

Finally someone who actually knows what they are talking about. It's basically just an A386 with a black ceramic bezel, but all the Rolex fanboys think that is a patented design. Rolex didn't even bother putting a ceramic bezel on the Daytona until 5 years ago. This look has been around for decades.

Firstly - can I say how much we appreciate the consistent quality and dependability of your videos. I quite like this watch. More than the Daytona though personally I was never huge on it - I used to buy quartz watches a lot, like the Tissot PRC200 but since I started diving i've never really considered one save for the TIssot z199 which I bought two years ago. If I was to get one though, I would love something like this. And I would enjoy the similarities to the Daytona, in the sense that someone mistaking it for one would be a great conversation starter! More power to Zenith!
@soundssimple1
@soundssimple1 3 года назад
Very reasoned discussion. The new Zenith is more Zenith in design than Rolex. There are more references to Zenith design identity than Rolex Daytona design identity. On the wrist it could never be mistaken for a Daytona. Zenith has its own history of excellence, it does not need to live in the shadow of any other brand nor be seen to be 'homaging' or 'referencing' any other brand. I would proudly wear a Zenith to a Rolex convention or on Daytona Beach !

Dear ID Guy, PHEW and thank you! I definitely do not know as much about design as you do. Nonetheless, the first question in my mind when I watched a review that seemed bored by this watch was: how else can the 1/10 of a second be legible WITHOUT using the bezel? The other aspect worth mentioning is, nobody moaned and groaned about the 50th anniversary model. Maybe because the bezel was a touch narrower, and the watch came on a strap. Even the bracelet is defensible, since it is almost the same as the bracelet on the 38mm Chronomaster. The only quibble might be the clasp, but I guess the "Sport" designation made a more robust solution desirable. In any case, no one would say "ugh, Daytona copy" unless they happen to be a self-professed "Rolex Fan Boy." One question: what would you say to a titanium or aluminum version, just to play on your "shades of grey" idea?

I fully acknowledge as do most enthusiast 100% that Omega and Zenith have a far superior movements. This Zenith certainly hits the mark. Really - I want to own one. However, the one thing Rolex has that Omega and Zenith does not is the brand equity that Rolex brings to market. It’s not just the watch; it’s the brand equity, and that is why the Daytona Panda is selling up to 30k on the pre-owned market. Is it worth, the market says yes. If you want the better watch? Grab the Zenith. Keep up the great content here! Ciao,
@jaewooklee5862
@jaewooklee5862 3 года назад
The movement has been downgraded to the cheapest Etachron regulator from Triovis, which is on previous el primero 400 movement. The horizontal clutch system of El primero can not guarantee the precise measurement of 1/10 second. Chronograph second hand could get some “play”, backlash or misalignment when operating. You can also easily find the second hand misalinement at ad photo from Zenith. If daytona had a 10 seconds hand, no error would be found because of the vertical clutch and the patented sprung tooth seconds wheel.
@lipinglin1994
@lipinglin1994 3 года назад
Actually, it is very common for Daytona to have an off-centered Chrono hand. They are all man-made and not perfect. Zenith does have to do some serious QC though. The latest released Chronomaster sport has some issues with their margins of errors.

Thanks IDGuy, a well balanced review highlighting both the positives and the negatives. This is a watch that I would consider purchasing for it's form and function not because of the badge on it, I generally apply this to most of my purchases not just watches, This combined with the Zenith history of watchmaking would put it on my (increasing) short list. If I wanted to change anything the chronograph second would be 1/2 red and not just red tipped (to match the other chronograph sub dial hands) as this would certainly help readability on the black dial. The Daytona is not something I would consider as there are other watches that have a better form and function that are actually available to purchase. I'm certainly not a Rolex hater by any means, I love the Sub no date without the cyclops, the current OP is great as well with the right dial. I'm on some sort of list with an AD for the latter but the more I wait the more the phone doesn't ring.

Fantastic analysis! You and "Not So Obvious Watch" channel nailed it. Unlike a few other “Lazy Brain” commentators. Thank you. You asked a great question regarding who would buy it. I see they are targeting a young audience. However, I'm in my mid 60’s and I love it. It immediately jumped to the top of my list of next watches to buy. I have to add I think much of the watch market is looking for someone or something to dethrone Rolex. The Rolex “issues” whether manufactured or organic have put us at the tipping point. I think this watch is the “one”. At least a start of the walk, run and even escape of the Rolex domination. Thanks!!!

I get your points and I agree that there is a lot of zenith in it. However, and having no attachment to the Daytona, I could not help to see it right away (I think it is mainly the proportions and font on the bezel). And if a new release causes such and intrinsic reaction as this one did, then it is either a design “flaw” (since you are failing to make it your one) or a calculated strategy (we like what we made, don’t care if it is a bit derivative and controversy alway generates talk around the product). Similarities aside, it looks good, it’s technically advanced and brings more options to the market.

As a guy who has spent over 500 days at racetracks, I have a reasonable understanding of what I am looking for in a chronograph. First, it has to be a larger than average watch so it can ne read easily. 41 mm with no bezel, 43 with bezel seem ideal for me. That way the dial is big enough to be readable. I never use the bezel at the racetrack, so no bezel models appeal to me. Next, the dial has to be all one colour with contrasting hands. The sub-dials in different colours actually make them harder to read. Finally, no screw down pushers. They are a total pain at the track. Missing a timing session because you forgot to unwind the pushers So, Rolex is a lousy track chronograph. Too small. Too hard to read. And screw down pushers. The Zenith is closer. My favorite, so far, is the TAG Heuer Carrera Automatic Cal.16 ref. CAS2111. White dial with blued hands means it is clean and very easy to read. As a fashion chrono, I do love the Silver Snoopy with the blue sub-dials.

*strategically leaves out footage of the clasp* With the shape and size of the bezel, bracelet, bracelet finishing and clasp; it becomes clear where they drew inspiration from. That doesn't take anything away from potential quality of the watch or its value proposition. But hard to argue against the fact that there's multiple borrowed design elements, all from the same watch and brand.
@ID-Guy
@ID-Guy 3 года назад
It wasn't strategic (I just didn't think it warranted coverage) The bezel is round and the dimensions are larger. Have you ever seen El Primero's on bracelets before this? Gay Freres bracelets used on the latest El Primero reissues? I believe that's where they got the inspiration for their clasp. Polishing on centerlinks? So many brands do this & Zenith has been doing it with all of their classic El Primero bracelets for years. Three link "oyster bracelets" - Must we get brands like seiko involved now too? The reality is all of these bracelet designs stem from the 50's, made by third party manufacturers when brands couldn't do it themselves. "Ownership" around this is spotty at best. Thanks for the comment Oliver!
@oliverpersson6090
@oliverpersson6090 3 года назад
@@ID-Guy I get that it wasn't strategic, just a friendly dig ;-) I understand that if you break it down, you can find alternative truths for each design decision, and I'm in no way trying to claim that they've done anything immoral or illegal. And while your and many others arguments are valid in themselves, as a whole I still strongly believe that it was a concious decision from whatever team designed this watch to take inspiration from the Daytona. My feeling, personally and professionally as a designer myself, is that the Daytona was a part of their inspirational moodboard (with many other watches including their own of course) at some point in the design process. I think it's totally fine to think it's a tastefully designed and well made homage, without hating the watch or the brand behind it. Best regards from Sweden!

Zenith is on a roll, first this chronosport then the defy chronos, which admittedly are not to my taste, and now the desirable skyline. Zenith is a bonafide watchmaker in its own right, with years of classic designs to work on for their current series. To people who keep saying zenith is copying daytona or AP, you need to do your homework and learn about the brand's history of extensive watch collection so you don't appear foolish.

Totally agree about a lighter shade for the bezel, even silver ( is that possible on ceramic? ) so as to distinguish it from the Daytona. And they should have kept the red chronograph hand. All in all, prefer it to the Rolex.

Finally there is a real strength in depth in the chronograph market. The new Zenith Chrono sport , the 38mm Royal Oak selfwinding chrono, the Speedmaster 321 Ed white and of course the Daytona 116500. If you can only choose one , and money was no object. Which is the best watch and why ?

Another IDGuy masterpiece! What I like about your perspective is the rethinking of the dial, hands and no-date! Zenith should consider your designs for a Version 2 next year. I could see the Chronomaster rocking my wrist over the Daytona - the Zenith, as designed, is the pinnacle as a chronograph tool with its capability to time seconds to a tenth.

It's quite interesting that it's been a trademark of theirs since the dawn of time (when they first introduced their automatic chrono caliber) - some models in their lines put the date a 6, I think only with the larger sizes at 42mm & 44mm. More than anything, like their multi-coloured subdials, it's one of the El Primero quirks ;) Thanks for the comment

Finally, someone who knows what they're talking about! The design also harks back to '90s bezelled Zeniths (see Watch Advisor). A very interesting and modern piece, that makes its central complication actually, err you know, useful. To me, the bracelet looks a bit sub-par (certainly sub-Omega), but otherwise a beauty that could be taken in a few directions. I like your alternative renderings, could the Greyscale use a metal bezel? Ceramic always seems flat in both colour and texture. Practical yes, but the flip is no patina. But hey, looks good on Instagram...

In hindsight, I should've been more critical on the bracelet and clasp. But the inspirations are great! I'll certainly check out WatchAdvisor's take on the 90's models. I like the looks of the Zenith much better than the Daytona's. Especially the black dial. But the specs give me pause somewhat - I am not 100% sold on the 5Hz bph (wear & tear) and I've been indoctrinated to always prefer vertical clutch over lateral. Also, caliber 4130 is tough as nails and probably more accurate in real life. Oh, and I think the polished PCLs was a mistake. I think I would prefer a good strap instead. All that said - go Zenith, well done, great watch.

The sub dials certainly pop more on the glossy black than the white dial but I’ve got so many black dial watches the white calls to me more. Your render of the black dial with white circumference within the black bezel is a stunner for sure, doesn’t quite give the same visual impact on the white. If they had gone with that all the knee jerk comparisons with the Daytona would have been somewhat muted. I’d like to see an open version dropping the seconds sub dial, at nine o’clock to a rotating spoke as per the tribute piece to Charles Vermot. Now throw in a blue sunray dial, open. Ha! I’m drooling. Just when I thought I was done with watches, just when I thought I was out... can Rolex now rest on their laurels? Can the mighty Rolex mothership feel threatened in any way. Some of the fanboys boats seem to have been rocked a little which never fails to amuse. Their rock solid residuals now under examination.

@IlRovina

Sorry but to me that Chonomaster 50th Anniversary looks nothing like the Sport in terms of bezel proportions, minute track and subdials. That design was way more related to the OG El Primero and its legacy. Instead, the overall proportions and the palette of the Sport resemble closely the Daytona, and it would have been very easy to them to stay more close to their legacy, as you brilliantly showed in your reinterpretations. It's not being a Rolex fanboy to state the fact that one watch looks very similar to another. Omega goes out of their way to be sure that the Seamaster 300 looks very different from the Submariner, and Zenith surely could have done more to differentiate this Chronomaster from the Daytona. They legitimately chose not to do so, probably to cash in from the stupid Rolex market policies. To me it's a smart and totally legit move, and I don't see why everyone on the internet is butthurted admitting it.

@@lipinglin1994 I only heard someone calling it an hommage, which in the watch industry is a way broader term than "copy". Anything from a design inspiration to a one to one copy could be called hommage, and seems to me this could easily fall under the first definition.

Glad you are not on the Zaytona bandwagon. Imo the model really harks back to Zenith El Primero De Luca vintage model. One could argue that daytona copied Zenith when they went black ceramic ring. Because Rolex is more recognized brand, alot of people and sadly alot of youtubers are jumping the zaytona train way too fast.

in Verses. This option is for the bigger wrist say if the Daytona's actual sub 39mm measurement feels small. For the anti Rolex. This is the watch that spawned the Daytona, at least originally powered it. Unlike every dive watch you could want will only be second in many minds to the submariner, this cannot be said here referring to the Daytona. Daily enjoyment. Unscrewing your pushers and not enjoying your movement vs taking off the Zenith at the office, just pressing the pusher, and marveling at the movement as you time yourself peeing on a break. Just sayin....
