Go visit Pompeii! My wife and I were there in October of 2022. It was truly amazing. As Americans, we had no idea how cool this was going to be. You can read about this place in history books, and see videos like this one, but the scale of the place is immense and makes a much bigger impact in person.

I am one of a few artists trained in Fresco. When I visited Pompeii it was shocking how well preserved the frescos are! In some places you can still see the sheen from the beeswax that was rubbed and buffed into the plaster.. very beautiful! I plastered and painted a fresco on the exterior of the bay window of my house. When I sold my house the new owner painted over it! Ihopein a thousand years someone uncovers it!

When I heard the word "fresco" I always imagined that the painting was very coarse, with more sand in it to hold it together. These Pompeii wall paintings are so finely detailed and beautiful! Just Amazing!❤

I was fortunate to go tp Pompeii in 1974 as a 12 year old boy from California. My Grandfather was from Naples and returned with his family some 60 years after immigrating. The day we explored Pompeii was a rainy October day and we had the entire site to ourselves. Could you imagine letting your 12 year old run free wherever he wanted as long as he returned for lunch. Great memories

Painting like this disappeared for more than a thousand years and only returned with the renaissance. These images are utterly stunning.
@Tugela60
@Tugela60 Год назад
That is not really true, there was art like this in medieval times. "Renaisance" was a term coined by Georgio Vasari, essentially, it was a creation of art historians of the time who began systematically studying past works. But art, including Roman style works, never went out of fashion, the difference was the historical study of them
@Metal0sopher
@Metal0sopher Год назад
@@Tugela60 Give some examples or it's not true.
@Tugela60
@Tugela60 Год назад
@@Metal0sopher Georgio Vasari did not wake up one day and decide that art was a thing and should be brought back.
@Metal0sopher
@Metal0sopher Год назад
@@Tugela60 Again, show me an example of realism and perspective from the 600s to 1300s after Rome and before Renaissance. The terminology is irrelevant. The Romans had complex realist art, it was revived in the 15th century but it did not exist during the dark ages. All art is art, but your original statement was "there was art like this in medieval times" meaning realistic perspective art. OK, Where are the examples?
@Tugela60
@Tugela60 Год назад
@@Metal0sopher Look up "Dutch primitives". Art did not disappear in the middle ages, the dark ages were not dark. Styles changed, much of it reflected religion until the renaisance, when neo classical directions became more prevalent. The renaisance did not rediscover ancient techniques, they rediscovered ancient subject matter.

I visited Pompeii in 1972 with my friend Bonnie as students resident in Rome. There were no hordes of tourista. We wandered through the city alone and unguided, marveling. We turned a corner and before our eyes the city with its inhabitants was alive again, with a market, commerce, horses. It was like we'd stepped back 2000 years. A most glorious shock. We dared not approach and stood there with our mouths open. Then we noticed some subtly placed klieg lights; a film was in process. I shall never forget that trip back over 2000 years, no matter how we got there. BTW. for good reason, more of the city remains buried and undisturbed than has been excavated. Who knows what wonders may be unearthed in the future.

Pompeii is breathtaking. An entire city preserved at a moment in time. When you visit other ancient sites (ie Jerusalem) there is so much destruction, rebuilding and layers, it leaves you a little confused and flat. In Pompeii you can walk through a door some one walked through 2000 years ago, you can see what they saw, walk down streets they walked down, touch things they touched. What’s also amazing is the number of tools and implements they used that we still use today. My favourite was one of the brothels that had 2000 year old graffiti rating the prostitutes and other graffiti from the prostitutes rating different customers. What made it even funnier, our tour guide was a very stern Dutch lady about 50 who translated the graffiti in a flat monotone word for word. The street sign pointing to the brothel was also quite funny. If you get the chance, go there, it’s well worth it.

I'm surprised the rooms are so small, esp. the triclinium where diners lay on couches to eat, there must have been hardly any room to move around. Beautiful conservation work, although the colour palette (red and yellow, red and black) is not to my taste

12:35 The leopard is beautiful, reminiscent of oriental paintings. It connected with me, still resonating through the centuries.

A nice example of triumphant reconstruction. The story you tell of Priapus is interesting. I've always maintained and still do he was telling everyone his membrum virile was indeed worth far more than just a bag of very valuable gold which the scale proved. It's still true through all the years and all ages.
