This is why a lot of these performance type events are usually won by the boring traditionalists but just below them are the exceptionally talented guys who are there for honest fun and truly entertaining and delighting others.

@@melissadana7829 do it - look them up. Lemon Squeezy are amazing and before you know it you too will be sad they weren't performing that year. This song and the Barbershop in jokes is one of the things that sucked me into the Barbershop RU-vid rabbit hole and I have zero regrets.

Bit of a noob question- how do they know which quartets to roast? Isn’t it a contest?

T Ritt the whole singing and performance against other quartets is a contest. But what they did is take popular quarters that have switched their names, or people, or styles and put them in the spotlight. Lemon squeezy has had like 3 different baritones and doesn’t perform, ringmaster replaces their bass a while ago. Stuff like that. It’s little roasts towards well known quartets. And to answer your question of who they know how to roast: they just pick the quartets that fit in the category whether that be if the quartet has changed people or if that quartet changed their name and so on

@@volatile5460 There's a really long post on their facebook which details the reasons for this whole thing. But basically, Ryan was very unhappy and there were tensions within the group, so they thought it best for everyone to separate.

There’s never any mean drama, it seems like they all genuinely like each other. If NF4’s vlogs/songs show anything it’s that they get on with all these quartets (and when they sing together, it’s magnificent.) The best way to show you, ex winners of the convention usually go on to write the charts (music and words) for most of the quartets that compete, each year. So there’s a sense of helping out, rather than being ultra-competitive.

Greg Stickler have you listened to the quartets above them? NF4 is definitely incredible but i would have scored the same as the judges.

Katana GG I wouldn’t go to a concert of signature I would have had the fifth sixth and would find hard to separate 2345 Five being nff I wouldn’t even have signature in top five I don’t know what it is about them I don’t like the songs they choose and don’t like the sound the lead makes He’s too low to me for a lead As I’ve said what do I know they won gold

Greg Stickler it’s just their style. Their style has nothing to do with how well they scored in each category. What your saying is preference. Also you say New Fangled Four has blend and great stage presence but I mean you have to have all of that too win and or be in the top ten so I’m confused on what your trying to say.

Katana GG Yes I guess that’s it When I listen to a quartet I’m not interested in stage presence I just know straight away whether I like them or not They don’t even have to be in the top ten Ist time I heard mains st nff that quartet with the little lead I think they won 2016 or 17 keepsake jokers wild etc I was a tenor in a quartet in 95 Australian competition So to me it’s either pleasing to my ear or not

Greg Stickler based on the judging standards that currently exist I agree with the judges decisions because I think judging based purely on technical ability they got the scores correct this year (which I often don’t think) but I will also mention that I don’t like many of the top quartets right now and do not think the judging system is conducive to the growth and furthering of barbershop. This exact same issue was seen with Boston Common where one quartet was clearly the best because they are a quartet that people would want to see over and over. Many of the sets nowadays are technically impressive but I wouldn’t care to go to a concert and quite frankly I wouldn’t enjoy it. In my opinion THE three things that should be judged on is 1) whether it’s good barbershop sung with healthy technique, 2) whether or not people like it and 3) whether it is something that could actually function as a part of a show outside of competition (this third one primarily applies to choruses which, though impressive, are often too focused on acrobatics that seem out of place IMO rather than beautiful singing with minimal staging such as was done by Zero8 this year).
