The source most people use when discussing ride accidents are news articles or videos. This seems like a great source on the surface, but unfortunately all too often news agencies get things wrong, fail to explain information, or flat out misrepresent ride accidents. Today we'll be looking at 4 examples of just that from the last 10 years.

It’s view based. Anything ‘sensational’ will be kept on screen for as long as possible. It’s discriminatory sometimes. If a gay man stabs someone they will report it but not the other 20 stabbings last week because they were too boring.

Hit it right on the money. They what every dime they can get, and that's exactly the tactics they have for it. My biological father is scared of his own shadow, afraid to go out in the backyard after dark (I am not exaggerating), because half of every day is sitting on the couch watching tv, news whenever it is on. We aren't in some big city either, we're in bum**** nowhere out in the rural-ist of the Midwest. They have drilled fear of every person that ever has the misfortune of encountering him, because that's what makes him watch their channel. DuurtyDavie (like that name) makes a wonderful point as well with how discriminatory it is. How many people made it a point to focus on the shooter that stated they were nonbinary? (completely ignoring the fact that, whether they were nb or not, it is still a hate crime that happened because of the flood of anti-queer rhetoric and propoganda propagated by, you guessed it, the media) The news these days just exists to push ignorance, hate, and to keep the public divided, because that is what makes them money.

Look at the misinformation story every news reporter was giving moments after officials finish their press conference after the 2008 Universal Studios Backlot Fire and not even the studios own news stations would correct themselves afterwards. Almost every station ran with the same narrative LIVE after being told what happened overnight since the officials already had finished their investigation before the press conference started.

@WolfDShadow 4 месяца назад
When she asked they would have replied a minimum of 3 times a day since there are 2 ride operator inspections and at least 1 maintenance crew inspection each day on rides that will be operational that day. Maintenance crews inspections happen while the park is closed and the rest of the staff is not at work, ride operators inspections happen right before opening the ride for the day and then halfway through the day they inspect again.

Love the reporter excusing her interruption with “It’s an interview, not a statement.” It’s rude to interrupt people either way. I commend that guy for not snapping, I would’ve gotten either flustered or angry. And I like your point about an interesting interview. I’ve said it a thousand times and I’ll say it a thousand times more; journalistic integrity is an oxymoron. The “interview” with the Merlin spokesman is absolutely infuriating. My grandma initially mentioned it to me like it was an accident because she saw it on the news, and i saw another article about it the next day. These sort of sensational stories really anger me, as Dueling Dragons was also deemed "unsafe" in its original dueling mode entirely due to bad policy of allowing people to carry phones onto the coaster, not because the attraction itself was dangerous. I think another problem with the news and accidents in general is that these are people who don't usually talk about roller coasters, suddenly having to talk about roller coasters. Also, the reaction of the media in the case of many of the accidents that you show in this video is actually quite similar to the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. Train derailments happen all the time, but they aren't usually that dangerous (this case is an exception). I feel like the media just tries to oversell the disaster aspect of any of these accidents or disasters to make more money from their headlines. It just really pisses me off as a nerd in some of these topics, seeing people be pushed away from something normally harmless and perfectly safe by some morons talking about something that they barely know anything about. Not surprised to see Inside Edition as an example here. Somehow they both dramatize and manipulate stories of little consequence, yet ALSO trivialize stories that should have way more depth. I plug my ears when my mom watches it lol

as a canadian (with access to american channels via satellite) its absolutely wild to me how emotionally charged/persuasive the reporters always try to be? not saying my news is necessarily any better but it's SUCH a noticeable difference, you can just tell by their tone how they're just trying to encourage outrage and fear 😐

The news likes to fear monger for sure. It's what leads to irrational fears. When I was a teen, I was at Six Flags America, my friend and I were in line to ride the Joker's Jinx and all of a sudden the train refused to launch. We left the line and rode other coasters, on our way back we saw the Joker's Jinx was running again and got back in line. We were to be the next loaded on and again, the "malfunction" which is actually a safety feature happened again. We left and decided today just wasn't our day to ride it and I told my mom. My mom took it as "dangerous" (due to previous news stories about rides becoming "stuck") but in reality, the fact the coaster sensed there was a problem and wouldn't move was safe.

I was there at icon Park when it happened, that guy that died DIED because he forced himself on the ride. They told him NO, (obviously overweight) then he made it a race thing.
@daisy12pinkanime85
@daisy12pinkanime85 4 месяца назад
The bigger issue with that incident was the fact that two of the seats had been tampered with so that they could fit larger riders who otherwise shouldn't have been able to fit. If the seats hadn't been tampered with, then even if he tried to "force" himself on the ride, the restraints wouldn't have closed, and the ride operator wouldn't have gotten the signal that he could dispatch the ride.

Now in the cheetah hunt case maybe not, but if it was on a launch track then yes. Crazy how bs the news is by blowing things out of proportion

Hey. I can be a news reporter in the US too..... "Tonight we are at park X, were something terrible happened!.... Ride Y got stuck on it's break section. We spoke a witness that saw it all happen. The park has not responded about what has been going on. But the witness told us the guests on the ride and the visitors that saw it all happen were terrified!..... they told us the operators at the rode were too slow to send the next train out of the station and this made the ride emergency stop and guest had to be evacuated at X meters Height! We are still live at the scene to report back when we have more "NEWS" about this tragic happening.....back to you in the studio"....... SOOOOO much sensation about nothing..... yeah this time the coaster did not get stuck on a break section, but guest might have just felt a bit nauseated about the rocking back an forth and YES... maybe the ride should have not opened because of high winds etc etc etc........ but that about what happend.....

Seeing the Cheetah Hunt segment reminded me of a thing they said when I was on the coaster insider tour last year. The guides and mechanics there were all VERY open about the valleying incident. It came across as, "it sucked for everyone, but we've made adjustments, and the chances of it happening again are VERY small." And sure enough, it's been a decade since that and there's been no other major incidents! Guess they did sort it out.

Was both human error and ride error yeah they didint check before releasing the test cart but system shouldn't allow the cart to go out while other cart was on track . The have new safety system in place manufacturer of ride put in a system that means ride cant operate with higher wind speeds now so most the time u go there it's only open at set times depending on weather

When it comes to "OSHA violations" the company i work for got in trouble with health and safety a few years ago. There was an accident where someone got injured fairly badly. It was investigated and although it was found that the company wasn't liable for the accident (the person had violated proceedures) it was found that training paperwork was not up to date or missing. Luckily everything directly related to the accident was in order. No fines, just a notice to deal with the issue. So yes, a "violation" can be something quite minor and often things are found when investigating an incident.

It’s mad how often people won’t go on something, go somewhere or eat something ever again because of ONE incident ! I’m not a lover of theme parks and being disabled and not a driver, don’t get out to parks that often. I ate at a restaurant for years before getting food poisoning one time, but I went back to it and never had another problem. A friend of mine ate a Mars Bar (candy bar) in 1977, which made him sick and he’s never touched one (nor any other chocolate) since ! He was travelling on a train as a child at the time and also suffered from motion sickness, so it probably WASN’T the chocolate bar ! It doesn’t just stand at that though - there is a lot of mis-information out there to do with everything, so if you’ve never read or seen the truth, you just blindly follow the masses and miss out !

An accident is an accident, No one wants one and everyone does what they can to avoid one. But they do happen. Some are just due to lack of communication (Like the smiler case). Maintance did not know another train was added, so safety that was put in place was overridden. The accident on TTD was something that no one saw comming either. Rides stop for a number of reasons, that does not automatically put them in the “accident” column.

The aviation and amusement ride industries are strikingly similar in this regard: over-the-top safety above all, and the moment anything unexpected happens everyone's onboard (well, every reputable manufacturer/park/etc. anyway) to update safety standards. It's actually incredible how well groups work together towards this goal. Then the media is right there to capitalize on as much clickbait and sensationalism as possible. That being said, I'm still overly scared about flying and amusement rides. I have a lot of respect for everyone in the industries though, and it's quite fascinating.
@munstify
@munstify 4 месяца назад
I'm constantly impressed with how reactive the aviation industry is to their various incidents and I do think there's similarity in the roller coaster world. Both industries will do full reports and make recommendations after even super minor incidents that were somewhat uncomfortable or inconvenient. It's pretty cool. That's why I like to watch videos about those incidents, because it really serves to make you feel more comfortable and safe on the coasters, at least it does for me.
@CoasterCollege

But the REASON why they are so safe is that they get this much attention. I witnessed the higher-ups' thought process on this. If they didn't get journalist pressure they would make it as unsafe as they could get away with. This effect is happening right now in Russia which got both cut off from the world and from proactive independent journalism. Bad journalism with exaggerated reports for the ratings is doing more harm than anything but making safety issues a publicly known problem is what keeps those issues at minimum.
