The Newsroom - America is not the greatest country in the world anymore...(Restricted language)

Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) hits the nail straight on the head in the opening minutes on HBO's new series 'The Newsroom'. He is asked by a college student a simple question during a campus debate. 'What makes America the greatest country in the world?'. Daniels initially goes the politically correct route then at the last minute goes with a honest, bold, straight forward answer that sums up a lot of the worlds problems that so many are afraid to accept because we all want to believe in our system and that it is our system that works. The evidence that is out there today is to the contrary and he discloses such information in his argument. We used to be the worlds best of the best and now we are just pretending. The first step to solving a problem is to admit there is one.

Nostalgia is a cheap psychological trick. He's not saying anything real. For instance, he says "We used to take care of our neighbors" but literally the same year this aired the US tied for first place in The World Giving Index, then did so again two more years in a row. He says "We used to make unGodly advances in technology" but to this day the US leads biotech (Monsanto), space travel (SpaceX), and information technology (Microsoft/Apple/Google). If you appeal to nostalgia, you get everyone on board. Liberals here you criticizing modern America, so they cheer. Conservatives hear you praising old America, so they cheer. But he's not saying anything real.

Can't believe how not true that quote is but people still believe in it. That's exactly how people (mostly men) identified themselves in 20th and 19th century. Part about being easily scared, well, poor people would either be scared of saying the wrong thing or they were poor enough that it wouldn't matter whatever they said. About high middle class, since they didn't have another big worry in life, they had luxury to be included in politics and their voice mattered (as much as it could matter) and since it mattered, of course they have been scared (at least in that aspect of life). Don't even want to start the story of poverty and slavery.

This is the most amazing answer I have ever heard. I totally agree with whoever wrote this show and had the courage to stand up and say it. Somebody has too. I was in the army and fought in Iraq. When I got injured, people said I made a sacrifice for our country. But to be completely honest, I don't know what the hell we were and still are fighting for. It wasn't 9/11 because we got Saddam and osama. and we are still there. We are losing our sons and daughters, mothers and fathers to a war that has no moral value. Bring our men home. The Iraqis and Afghanis dont want us there. We are messing with a culture that has existed just as long as ours. We fought the revolutionary war for our freedom from the British trying to tell us what religion to be and how to live and work and eat, they tried to take away our culture and our way of life. It is exactly like we are doing to them. We are the Enemy over there and more and more each day it angers me that i agreed to follow the orders of my superiors and go along with Bush's and Obama's personal wars. Stop spending billions of dollars on weapons of war and put it toward making our country, what it once was. I remember when gas was 99 cents per gallon and family's were generally caring about their sons and daughters and held family events. Welfare wasn't so prevalent and the unemployment rate was not even heard about. The problem why we are not the greatest country in the world is because we are to busy fighting other peoples wars and we are using more than 3/4 of our nations budget to fight it. Dont get me wrong I love the United States of America more than anything in the world and I would die to defend my country and my family, but only if it is a direct threat to the American Way of Life. I like many others of my brothers in arms Past Present and Future are the History and the future of our countries development, we have fought for Independence, the abolition of Slavery, we have fought to stop the slaughter of millions of Jews and we have leveled city's for the destruction of our country. Do we as this generation want to be remembered as mercenaries who fought for importation and exportation rights, fighting for oil, taking the lives of innocent children and depriving a culture to live free the way they want to live. I sure as hell don't. We are letting our nation slip away. We are losing our freedom because now everything has a price tag and more than 1/2 cant afford to live free anymore. Please leave comments, I want to know what you think about this. We need to stand up and make this country truly FREE.

What are you still doing there? Finishing the job...the job isnt getting those that wronged you but preventing a greater wrong against those who's home you smash into to get those guys. You cant topple a government and walk out the door in couple years and expect it to work. True Peace after such a sharp and drastic change takes a generation...thats 10-25 years. But it is worth it...cuz those kids you help that country raise in Peace, education and understanding will become the Vanguard that will hold that country together after you leave, but you have to let them grow up first. "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach the man to fish, feed him for the rest of his life."
@sirGiedion

ZurielWraithblades So are you saying the war on Iraq was worth it or even justifiable? I guess you are still waiting for them to 'grow up' are you. Many of those 'kids' who grew up then probably remember only the horrors of war, and losing their families and loved ones around them. You think it will be so easy for them to thank America for their 'freedom'? Do you realize the turmoil that they have had to endure for the past decade? The abject poverty, the dysfunctional government with endless infighting from the different factions, sectarian instability and corruption running rampant.. Yeah they may have a little bit of freedom nowadays from Saddam's totalitarian regime but that just might be outweighed by the chaos they are now experiencing. And it's going to get worse my friend before it gets better.. if it ever gets better.. by the look of things over there, it's on an ever downward spiral. I agree with Matthew Walker .. GWB's agenda was never really about a 'war on terror' or 'weapons of mass destruction' and certainly never was it in defense of the welfare of Iraqi citizens in general. It was a self-serving agenda with economics as the driving force behind it all. It served as a convenient distraction from problems at home with the economy and there were of course the concerns over securing the oil reserves. And we can't forget that the insatiable hunger of the 'Military Industrial Complex' - a lovely warning phrase coined by good old Eisenhower - could not to be ignored by Bush as he pumped billions of dollars into the beast to make all of them defense contractors happy and fat... I applaud Matthew for realizing the futility of it all. The governments of the day - whether headed by Republicans or Democrats (Obama isn't much better in this regard I'm afraid) are driven by the strong arm of big industry and their own selfish interests. The government is no longer 'for the people' which is quite sad. The gap between the rich and poor is ever increasing while the government continues to perpetuate the madness and feed the corruption, lies and rhetoric. Matthew, I think you and citizens like you have to take back your own country.. little by little. Push politicians to change. Start thinking local, and what you can do to improve the state of your community around you. There is no easy answer, but you have to tend to your own flock before you can reasonably help others. Don't get me wrong though.. there is value in having a military and I think Matthew eluded to this as well. If there is a direct threat to our own sovereignty or freedom, they should be brought into action. But we shouldn't be meddling in other people's affairs where we don't belong. War from afar is cold and calculating with a blatant disregard to the 'casualties of war'. I can't and won't condone this. If the military was utilized for positive action and grass-roots building of societies for them to become self-sufficient, then I would support this function of the military. War does not bring peace, but 'helping thy neighbour' might.

***** I see you completely miss wtf I was talking about as all you focus on is 'right and wrongs' of US's invasion of Iraq. Right or Wrong US made a bloody mess of their country and you cant just walk out the door. Governments thrusted up and not backed up fall and chaos of that follows is worst then anything..see Afghanistan after Russian invasion and UN/US lack of backing/support after Russia left...If the world had helped and stayed with Afghanistan back then we'd not have the complete mess it is today. What the World needs to do is invest in long-term support, both civil and military until that country can actually support its own self by itself like most other countries and it could do prior to said 'war'. As I said in my before statement it takes a Generation to stablize a country after being so gutted. Im not American and hell I hope they DONT thank you for screwing them up for decades to come, USA did as much damage as previous government and if you walk out now..more...What I hope is that they can atleast look at you and say "well atleast you didnt leave us holding the bag" but guess what..we didnt learn from Afghanistan in the 80s and we are repeating it again today in both Afghan and Iraq..and by us I mean every member of EVERY 1st world nation.

ZurielWraithblades Perhaps I did misinterpret what you said, but you don't necessarily have to get hostile about it to state your case. And perhaps I was a bit emotional too and I apologize. Also, I'm not American either, but probably no better anyway ;) But I think it's quite hard to pinpoint where everything has fallen off the hinges so to speak. America has made mistakes in diplomacy in the past, so have others, actions always have consequences (and perhaps inaction as well), but we fail to evaluate those potential consequences based on past experiences. It always seems shortsighted - after the fact. Why? Because we're meddling in things we don't fully understand. Who would have thought the Taliban would have become such a threat? Hindsight is 20/20. America has had a history of directly or indirectly supporting fanatical groups to achieve their end game, only to create a new adversary as an end result. They let Afghanistan go into turmoil because they basically got what they wanted.. they got the Soviets to withdraw and after that, their interest waned.. apart from trying to install some U.S. friendly leaders who either got assassinated or later resisted their own U.S. agenda. All the while, a civil war was brewing paving the way for other threats to easily step in. It's a complex dilemma.. With a loooonng history of meddling in foreign affairs, it ends up being a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' scenario. For America to have stayed in it, the resources, finances required was a big detractor esp. when the benefits to America seemed unclear at best at the time. Who do you support? The Mujahideen? Which sub-group? Because they were all fighting each other! 'One big mess with no clear solution' was probably what they saw..
@ZurielWraithblades

***** I always get hostile when I am 'assumed' or treated in anyway as American. Many will flame me but since atleast when the Empire of the Rising Sun attacked them and forced them to join 2nd Great War, they have done more harm then ever good. (by my tally of opinion). Though at first it was with good intentions its slowly like all things in America and now often in most 1st world countries..$ the sole true driving factor. Going back to what was said in the video...'it wasnt always that way'...I do believe we could and chose not to see what Afghanistan would become, no Taliban wasnt expect but we knew better we choose to forget and ignore cuz it was easier. A country that has had its entire internal structure ripped out is going to become someone rotten's playground. We cant predict fully who..but fact that it WILL is the reason we need to stay. Yes we will still screw shit up, and yes it will be bad, costly and hard...but alternative will cost more. Like all debts, longer you let them grow, more you pay.

The Cold War, Vietnam, Korea and Cuba all happened because the US thought it was their right as victors to a war they didn't partake in up until Pearl Harbor (America's allies called for aid and recieved no answer but Pearl Harbor was what got the US in?) to waltz in and stamp out communism wherever it may land. Communist nations refused to do business with capitalists, and places like Cuba, Korea and the like represented potential traders to suck dry. Never mind the fact that America was butthurt as most countries were sympathetic to communism, giving rise to public healthcare, education and co-operatives, instead of the capitalist regime America tried so hard to propagate. America only seemed good back then because its government has been brainwashing its citizens for decades with relative success, and those it failed ended up as the downtrodden. Like, holy hell, the US dropped nuclear weapons all over populated islands just to see what would happen and those cases are still being fought to this day. People were still unsure if abolishing slavery was a good idea. America isn't bad now. It always has been. It's just the information is readily available now so people think it's a recent occurrence.

The sixties is not recognized for what it was. It was America's GOLDEN AGE. All of the arts thrived: music, painting, sculpture, literature, philosophy, poetry, etc. The sciences thrived with space exploration. Our IDEALS were sky-high. We wanted free love, free music, free food, free everything. We wanted lives of creativity, or meaning, of drugs, of sex, equal rights, and freedom from Calvinism and repressive religious rules. Playboy magazine was great, not only for the open sexuality, but for publishing the best writers of the age. Bradbury, Mailer, Baldwin, Heller, Kerouac, Vonnegut, and dozens of others. I studied history, and if America ever had a true golden age, it was the brief period from about 1960 to 1970. That was THE decade. If you pluck that out from the 20th century, all you have left are two world wars, a Great Depression, and the atom bomb. But most of it went down the drain. We hippies are older now and are either retired or back to building pyramids for the Pharaohs. Our society is full of useless work. Wall Street. Diapers. Metamucil, Valium, college tuition, nutty presidents, school shootings, and ethnic and racial hatred. The sixties vanished in a cloud of weed smoke. When the smoke cleared, we were back in 1930. This ain't the year 2020 we hoped for back then. I can do without flying cars, but wtf happened to the music? Where is our moon colony? Why are we still burning coal? Why do we have so many nukes pointed at each other? Anyway, that's how I remember the sixties. Maybe you see it like me. Or differently. I salute you all by holding up my first two fingers in a V shape and say to your all, "peace, love, and flower power". Sure, it sounds kinda silly, but wasn't it good to try to have? Didn't it fill you with hope?

I keep coming back to this year after year. It rings true in so many ways. Every word from that outburst is what the underlying problem is. “America isn’t the greatest nation in the world anymore. But we sure used to be.” It is a perfect critique of both sides of the political spectrum. Why people don’t like to pick a side lest they get caught up in a cult of personality due to modern technology and how social media operates. No matter your views, nearly everyone in the US agrees that there is something wrong with America. But all we hear is how absolutely amazing it is and how we should feel horrible for either contributing to the downfall or horrible for thinking it wasn’t amazing in the first place. The ideals of freedom of ideals, of speech, of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, were just that: Ideals. They were ideas that the men of our past fought for. Was it practical? No. Not in the slightest. Yet they fought all the same. Not to make America perfect, but to make it “a more perfect union”. From day ONE this country was not envisioned as a perfect bastion of star-spangled awesome. It was an experiment, a project meant to self improve over years, over generations, into something we could all be proud of. The men who started this nation were flawed to say the least, so too were the people who further improved upon it. No one was a saint, no one was a demon. America was tested again and again both by foreign powers and our own domestic issues. We stumbled, we fell, we realized our mistakes instead of brushing them off. That is what made us an America worth fighting for, worth preserving and worth advancing. We were built upon change, upon seeing where it could take us to brighter futures. But now we don’t do that anymore. I try to speak to people on all sides of the political spectrum. One thing I have noticed is a few arguments against another’s policy they might agree with. The “It is not practical” defense. The term “it is not practical” or “it will never happen” are two phrases that are poison to how our political system works! Murphy’s Law states as such, so why not stop fearing the concept and start using it to fight for what you believe in? Is it impractical that I feel I shouldn’t go bankrupt after one visit to the ER? Is it impractical I feel I should be able to defend my property if someone throws the first punch at me? “It will never happen!” Both sides of the left and right tell me when trying to convince me they are the right choice. And my question is “Why?” Why are they so impractical? And why should that even matter? These are ideals. Ideals are not reality, but dreams we wish to strive towards. Why do they have to be practical now? Why can’t we do what we were known for in the past: Figure it out! Why have we stopped fighting for the American ideal and instead are forced to pick one bunker for the sake of “practicality”? Why should I sacrifice my hopes for this nation and get nothing in return except fear the other side will come and get me? Why should I not call out someone on my side when they don’t do what they promised? What kind of cult is that?!? Who let a cult start to run politics in America of all places?!? My point is America isn’t the greatest country in the world anymore. But it could be again. It has the potential regardless of practicality. We need to wake up, to realize that both sides throwing us in these bunkers are the problem. We need to vote not for one side or the other because we fear our opponent, but vote for who we believe is best in our hearts. We need to stop choosing the lesser of two evils, we still lose in the end. We only set the bar lower every couple of years. The solution is we vote for ideals, we actually read the constitution and take from it the words and culture of “a more perfect union”, of “all men are created equal,” and of the foundation that this nation was made of the people, by the people, and for the people. We, the millions of individuals within this nation, hold a power that those governing us fear we realize. The tables shifted, but we can shift them back. All we need to do is realize how to skirt their game and hold their feet to the political fire when they no longer hold the interests of their citizens to heart. Is this idea practical today? Hell no it isn’t! But it is an idea worth fighting for, and that is the most American thing you can do. Stand up, use your voice instead of your fists, and use your words to fight for what YOU believe in. Not what other people tell you to believe whether it be family, peers, or politicians. What YOU believe in, after thinking and reflecting, and coming to your own conclusions. Will you agree with everything? No. Will everyone agree with you with everything. Also no. But if you stand by your beliefs, beliefs that you choose instead of it being forced upon you, and use your speech instead of violence, you are being the most patriotic American possible. America is not the greatest nation in the world anymore. The question now is: “How do we the people fix it?”

They keep singing that word over and over again as if freedom and America are mutually exclusive, when in reality, America has always been a slowly progressing nation by fighting systems of injustice towards achieving the necessary standard of what freedom should be. It took until this year for LGBT citizens to be federally protected from being fired on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity! There's no oversight or enforcement of laws being broken by politicians and racial minorities still need to fear for their life and well-being when they go out in public. So every time I hear someone say we are their greatest country in the world or freedom is what we stand for, I lay out the brutally honest truth. We are not the freest country in the world, that would be Holland where you can solicit a prostitute and smoke marijuana in front of a police officer and nothing would happen to you.

This damned awful convinction that America is somehow better than every other country which only americans believe to a point where a scene like this can be shot and the realistic reaction that is portrayed is a collective gasp at the phrase "America is not the greatest country in the world". Now think about this exact scene, change America with any other country and the crowd of americans with the crowd of that country and at best two people will gasp. Because nobody is that much arrogant. There's a lot of proud people from very different countries, even very patriotic. Nobody in the world, even under freaking dictatorships is that much deluded to think their country is that awesome, because *all countries have very real issues* . The Reason we are not the Greatest Country in The World Anymore - is that The Greatest Generation - who went through the Great Depression and WWII - didn't want their children to suffer the way they had - and they spoiled them rotten. Not that the Greatest Generation was perfect either. The worst thing they did though was they raised a generation of children who thought they were entitled to whatever they wanted. He talks about being informed - and - The Greatest Generation, despite their poverty - could mostly read and write - and they read newspapers. You can cram a lot more information into a small amount of space in a Newspaper - compared - to the amount of information that can be conveyed through Television or worse yet - Social Media. Electrons are complex - and it gets worse from there. The Talking Heads you had in the early days of TV were all trained as Print Journalists. And yet - Walter Cronkite (whom this show lauds for doing so) did more to lose the Vietnam War in about 30 seconds than Johnson or Nixon did as President - and millions of people died and were enslaved because of that. Thousands drowned, were raped or robbed and murdered by Pirates as Boat People fleeing the Communists. Of course Truman had abandoned China to the Communists - terming the aide sent to the Corrupt Nationalists as _Sand down a rat hole_ . Tens of millions died because of that. Look up _"The Great Chinese Famine"_ on Wikipedia. The Communists killed between 15 and 55 million people during the Great Leap Forward in and about 1959 by accident (which is not counting all the millions they killed on purpose). Think about that. The Nazi's killed 6 Million Jews in Concentration Camps - and 4 million other people they didn't like as well and that's only 10 million. 15 Million - is the low number. 55 Million people (about the same as the number of people who died world wide during WWII) may have died as well. They don't know - because the people who would have kept track of that - died too. Obama abandoned Iraq to ISIS - and it was Iran that saved it. Trump Abandoned the people who had fought for us in Afghanistan when he negotiated a Separate Peace with the Taliban - and Biden carried out that agreement. Remember 9/11? Thanks to Trump and Biden - the Terrorists who attacked us and dropped the World Trade Center - won. The Greatest Lie Ronald Reagan ever told the American People was "You are good people." We aren't. Of course ... no one else is either. We aren't worse than everyone else - we just aren't any better. We like to think we are - but - we're not. .

Take a look at what Henry Kissinger did btw, also look at the actions of the CIA under the behest of Eisenhower et. al. You'll quickly find that America wasn't exaclty the moral good facing off against "communism." We stopped wasting our tax dollars on shitass foreign wars that did nothing and weren't helping anyone. Sounds like a win to me.

I am from India saw it when it was released. And I have tried explaining the same thing abt my country to my parents they had the same reaction as your parents had. I guess we are in minority and the world is fucked. But there is hope our numbers are increasing if the world survives it would be because people who thing humanity matters and logic matters. And I like variety in culture cause it brings different food and flavours of life. It’s just that we need to think in good competition in countries like how to make better lives for citizens.

Great is such a widely opinionated term that left unaccompanied by an adjective that means something. America is the greatest in imports, greatest in social media game, greatest in many different categories. But it is not the greatest in everything. It has its weaknesses. Every country has a weakness and a strength. Many comments say "Canada, Australia, New Zealand are amazing countries. Yeah and their government still steals natural resources such and oil and natural gas from poverty stricken countries such as Timor Leste and Papua New Guinea. Claiming to provide freedom in exchange for the rights to all their natural resources. Canada can be a strong economic power from their business with the US all you need to do is cross the border so tourism is a big boom in Canada hence why major cities in Canada are right across the border. America is a great country but it certainly has its weaknesses. Just like every country in the world.
@Dumbliberal
@Dumbliberal 3 года назад
Rio that’s what his point is that there no proof that says America is the greatest country in the world. If the question was is America great then I guess yes just like most of the countries in the world. And as per American values goes it use to be free trade and democratic values atleast within the borders( cause we all know how many dictators America has supported for their own benefit as well toppled government who were elected). Now since 2016 the country which went japan in 1850s and force it to open the borders and trade is making protectionist Policies. ( it was always there for certain sectors but now propents of free trades and acting communist what an irony). Let the market decide but I guess they are not able to keep up. Right now America is the most powerful and dare I say still the biggest economy powerhouse in the world but the hippocracy is for all to see. And I haven’t yet touched about how the people whose Declaration of Independence says all men are created equal went on with slavery for 90 more years after adopting that line. And killed Native Americans to brink of being less than 2 percent of the population. Shall I go on.
@vm4708
@vm4708 3 года назад
@@Dumbliberal 90% of Native Americans died from the disease that Europenians unintentionally brought over from Europe. They were immune, Natives were not. It's sad, but a reality. No one is saying that the bubonic plague that killed over one-third of the population of Europe and was brought from Asia was because 'yellowman' hated 'white' man. As for US, there was one political party that pushed slavery and exterminated Native Americans for their land - the democratic party. Andrew Jackson was not what America represented. If there was political support to stop slavery early it would happen. Unfortunately, that's what people back then did - they owned slaves. It is worth mentioning that no republican owned slaves in 1860 - something to think about. While Haiti was the first nation to abolish slavery, northern US states did so as well in 1804.

So keep trying. Admit the USA is not perfect. Have honest discussions about how to make it better. And then try to improve things. Just because the dream hasn't been realized YET doesn't mean we should give up. Keep trying. Biden will be announced the winner today. He will admit that the USA can be made better if the hatred of right and left for each other is ameliorated. And make Aaron the next president. (Or at least get him to write Biden speeches.) :)
