A Conversation with Pakistan’s Ambassador to United States
As U.S. troops leave Afghanistan, the regional landscape that has dominated the last two decades of U.S.-Pakistan relations is shifting significantly. The Biden administration’s focus on competition with China and increasing climate concerns - coupled with the Pakistani government’s desire to shift focus to geo-economic ties with the United States - offer potential new parameters for the U.S.-Pakistan relationship. Meanwhile, both countries remain vested in the outcome of the Afghan peace process and regional peace and security in South Asia. Can the United States and Pakistan move beyond the persistent challenges in the bilateral relationship to cooperate on the priorities they share?
On July 7, USIP hosted Dr. Asad Majeed Khan, Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States, to discuss Pakistan’s responses to recent developments in Afghanistan, the future of U.S.-Pakistan relations and emerging regional security challenges in South Asia.

PAKISTAN - AMERICA RELATIONSHIP Over the years, Pakistan had bitterly complained about the unfair treatment it had received from the U. S. despite being a faithful ally for over seventy and odd years. It was a so-called 'strategic ally' or 'non-NATO ally". It is time to examine the justification of Pakistan's injured feelings: (1) Even from the time Pakistan was founded, the country willingly sold itself to the West. M. A. Jinnah, whom Pakistan calls the Great Leader (Quaid e Azam) had offered the then-American ambassador to be the West's last post against the Soviet Union reaching the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. (2) Pakistan had always been a willing 'village rakhelu' (those from South Asia understand the word) moving from one patron to the other - - first it was the U.S. and the West, next the Arabs, and now the Chinese. It is also eyeing new patrons Turkey and Russia. So, Pakistan should not complain if the world treats it as a 'rakhelu'. (3) There is another South Asian saying that two should be equal in battle or marriage. Pakistan and the U. S. have had an asymmetric relationship due to the differences in size and might between both of them. (4) If Pakistan had been unfairly treated over seventy-plus years, how come it never woke up but repeated the same mistakes? Repeatedly, Pakistan’s alliance partners cast it aside like a soiled rag, yet the country had learnt nothing. (5) Even today, Pakistan has thrown itself into the arms of China lock, stock, and barrel with zero wiggle room. So, the Pakistan story continues.

51.47".... three nuclear powers in close proximity.... should not too much comfort to anyone...." But, only one country is frequently flashing the N-car to blackmail the west. India is clear that there is no going back on J & K status. The onus is on Pakistan to come clean on Terrorism. If Islamabad fails to seen the writing on the wall, ten years from now you will continue to make the same noises and getting snubbed by New Delhi with greater contempt!

Very refreshing Pak - US perspective by the learned ambassador. I enjoyed his talk very much. Certainly, he is FM material with his cooool and calm but very methodical and realistic approach. He is trying to bring the best out of the ties between the two countries. Very positive and productive approach which i dont see in the unnecessarily emotionally charged FM who seem to beore suitable for internal politics. Great work your excellency.

Geo economics cannot be and will never be the priority of Pakistan as its core idia of nation is expansion and dominating initially in South Asia and later Islamic world and whole world. The basis of above statent is initiating for.ation of OIC, striving to have strategic depth in Afghanistan and trying to capture Kashmir several times.

USA was defeated in Afghanistan not by taliban but by Pakistan that provided aid support and refuge to taliban . Otherwise US military would have wiped out the taliban.
