As a solo gamer you have become my most reliable source for both game review and play through. I love your voice and your constant air of positivity. As for complexity in games, the learning curve is one of my favourite aspects of board games. I love that “Ahhh, now I get it” moment. I watched a load of “This war of mine” reviews. All were critical of the game, claiming it to be “depressing”. Your play through was wholly different and uplifting. A bought a copy based on that. It’s now my favourite BG. I agree, complexity should not be seen as a barrier to entry, but rather as a challenge that will give you rewards. Thanks for all the great content. Much appreciated.

As someone who loves heavy games, I think complexity for its own sake isn't what I look for. I love games like Mage Knight because they offer depth. More specifically, they offer a broad and varied decision space that I get to explore, and where the best strategies aren't always readilly apparent and I feel rewarded when I "crack" the game. Depth often comes with complexity, but complexity itself doesn't necessarily offer depth. Sometimes, it's just relatively shallow game covered in piles of faff. It can be tough to distinguish which is which sometimes, but I feel like that's what's at the heart of this.

I'd love to hear a handful of examples of heavy games that are complexity for complexity's sake, because I'm not playing them I guess. I also think there can be some joy in breadth as well as depth. Not all breadth is shallow. I often enjoy games with a ton to explore that isn't necessarily adding an incredible amount of strategic depth, but is just giving me new experiences to enjoy. I consider Sleeping Gods to be a game of tremendous breadth but not much strategic depth and I still love it. Not everything has to be brain burning. But, yes, a complex super shallow game would be bad. Thanks for watching!

Or how about specific examples of how this applies to Voidfall?
@SanderPastoor

@@TotallyTabled Too Many Bones: Undertow is a prime example for me. There's a dizzying amount of rules exceptions and niche interactions that force me to spend more than half of my playtime in the rulebook to check if I'm even playing right. It's particularly grating when I spend five minutes setting up a complicated scenario with specific rules and interactions, only to be killed in the first round by some unlucky dice rolls. It's one of the few games I own where "the juice isn't worth the squeeze" really comes to mind. Quick edit: I agree with what you're saying! I love Sleeping Gods for the same reason. There's a lot to interact with, but it's all fairly easy to grasp and fun to explore.

Yeah, it is great news. I sometimes fear companies will just move on after the initial push, but sounds like they plan to go really invest in this one. Nice to see. Thanks for checking out the video!

This title is SACRILEGE. Mage Knight forever! Love your videos by the way, you're doing an amazing job with these, and your vibe is always so totally chilled out. I got Robinson Crusoe and Mage Knight mostly because of you, and they're one of my favorite games ever, along with Pax Pamir, Arkham LCG, The Gallerist and Gaia Project. What puts me off the Voidfall is the fact that it looks like a cluttered mess. Even though I personally very much enjoy maximalist graphic design, Voidfall's maximalism looks unintentional and makes it look more complex than it actually is. Lacerda's games are elegant not only visually, but in how they're structured, and the graphic design that sits on top of them and represents them simply makes the intention behind them clear. Voidfall though is inconsistent visually, especially with its wide array of icons, and in this case the complimentary colors that Ian used make it even less readable than it could've been, which is worse. It also doesn't look like a space game at all, even with all of its overproduction - it's just a few purple hexagons and a bunch of tableaus drowned in a pile of visually inconsistent icons. Gaia Project for example looks messy at first, for example, but it's incredibly readable with a single glance, it's very clean compared to what it packs in terms of decision space. It's so tight and brain-melting, I'm very surprised you didn't cover it yet, I sometimes wonder is it because you didn't try it yet or because you didn't like it? Though, to be fair, I bounced off Kanban EV's solo heavily because of Turczi's design. I played it 8 times and wanted to love it, but could not - its solo just shoehorns you into making suboptimal moves just to stay afloat, it doesn't let you take a breather and play a long thought-out strategy, you have to get points right now, otherwise you're out. It just castrates the beautiful design of Kanban and I heavily disagree with that approach. I loved Kanban very much, and it was such a disappointing solo experience, it pained me to get rid of it just because of that, as I play solo 99% of the time. I had my eyes on Voidfall for a bit, but after the Kanban experience, I held off. If it's any indication of Turczi's approach to design, then it's totally not for me. Anyway, would love to see your playthroughs of Gaia Project (maybe when the expansion finally comes out?) and John Company, these games deserve the Totally Tabled treatment.
@TotallyTabled
@TotallyTabled 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for the thoughtful comments! Gaia Project is definitely on the to-do list. I have played it, mostly with 2 and 3 players and a couple times solo, but it has been a while. I have played more Terra Mystica and I like Gaia Project more. With both games I get this feeling, and I'm not sure why, that I'm in a creative straightjacket and if I was better at the game I would know what move I'm supposed to do. I feel like I have the illusion of choice when really only 2 choices make sense given the setup and my faction. Maybe that feeling is mistaken and there is a lot of paths to victory, but I can't help but feel railroaded. Voidfall on the other hand gives me so much creative freedom and so many ways I could deal with any one problem or achieve any goal. I feel you could set up everything exactly the same and nobody would play out their cycle in the same way. I love that feeling. Again, maybe it is an illusion to a certain degree, but it tricks me into believing. As for Voidfall's messiness, what you say has merit for sure. I think in person on the table I don't find it as graphically confusing as you. It is a language of icons but you pick it up fast. The icon sheet makes it easy to reference and I found that I understood most cards right away. I think Voidfall is maximalism done right. The scroll wheels for your VP and resources work so well. You basically always have similar cards with similar actions, so they become second nature. I don't know. This sort of thing is always going to be somewhat subjective, but I find the game on the table to be relatively easy to read. Thanks so much for checking out the video!

A lot of points here, esp about GP.
@slimyweasel
@slimyweasel 8 месяцев назад
@@TotallyTabled I think you're 100 percent correct about GP - there definitely are 1-2 optimal moves you can make each turn, even more so than that, if you're good (or insane) you can potentially calculate your every move before the game even starts, it's just that they're different 1-2 optimal moves every time because of how modular it is. I'm sure there is always a single optimal turn there somewhere, it's just for me, it's hard to figure it out as there are too much stuff to consider - your faction's abilities, starting locations, nearby planets, different bonus abilities on the scientific tracks, the tracks themselves, activated abilities, round boosters, resource management, round goals, game goals, expansion, building upgrades, satellites, federations, terraforming, Gaia projects, energy management - and it's all open information available to you from the start, and you have to sequence it all perfectly, it's almost inadequate. AP inducing madness. I realized that in solo gaming AP is actually one of my favorite things, and it delivers it in spades. In Mage Knight getting stuck in an AP induced coma/knockdown is pure bliss for me. Gaia is like a procedural puzzle that creates itself randomly every time, but always stays balanced somehow. What I love about it is despite it is a sprawling game, it's very tight design at the same time. Tight and very strict, yes. In Terra Mystica there are even optimal opening moves that every experienced player will make, akin to chess. Gaia inherited some of its strictness, yet it's more open than that. But it is definitely super dry, calculating and very, very German. After all, one of the devs even has not one, but two umlauts in his name. Helge Ostertag and Jens Drögemüller - just saying it out loud will make you feel like you own a bakery in 18-th century Bavaria. Sorry, I tend to be very nitpicky to graphical and overall design, to the point of being borderline pedantic and awfully stuffy, but it comes with the profession and actually helps to achieve good results in rendering and production. It is totally subjective still, especially when we're talking about a personal appeal of games. And I do realize it's not very wise of me to write Voidfall off just because of a single solo mode David designed some time ago. And I didn't love Mage Knight, Gaia and Robinson visually at first, but came to appreciate them for what they are, same goes for Uwe Rosenberg's games. I like how you described At the Gates of Loyang as a free jazz gameplay, it feels like there's a special place in your heart for games that let you be creative. I think I will give Voidfall a shot because in theory it's exactly the game I would love. What I love about your vibe is how inviting you make every game you show, to me or to pretty much anyone who stumbles on one of your videos. It's actually a very important work for the community and overall board game culture. Thanks again, Shaggy.

Shaggi, you can totally make a dedicated video on the subject of creative freedom because I think it’s an interesting topic. I was just talking to another content creator about how we both bounced off Skytear Horde because we felt the decision space was on rails. And that’s ultimately why I stopped playing Magic the Gathering, its antecedent.

I like complexity but the issue with complexity and fiddliness is past a certain point I can't help but feel it would function better as a video game rather than a board game. I played Gloomhaven JOTL phyisical first but after playing on Steam there's really no reason to go back especially as a solo player. Tactility is lovely but ultimately unnecesary for me. And I think the "juice not being worth the squeeze" arguement is justified in the instances when mechanics are piled on just for the sake of having more to do without meaningfully integrating with or adding depth to the core gameplay. Not saying Voidfall does that but I've definitely seen it in other heavy games.
@TotallyTabled
@TotallyTabled 8 месяцев назад
My problem with "juice is not worth the squeeze" is it is a completely subjective dismissal leveled at all heavy games. If a reviewer finds Voidfall "not worth the squeeze" that tells me more about the reviewer themselves rather than the game. It is like the "feels like work" or "complexity for complexity's sake" phrases. I think all these phrases are fairly meaningless and just a way of saying "heavy games are bad." Why don't we talk about "simplicity for simplicity's sake" when it comes to the avalanche of one idea/one mechanism games that flood the market each year? I mean, for every heavy game that could maybe lose a mechanism or due with a bit of streamlining, there are so many games that could due with more. But we rarely hear that complaint. Why? What if we imagined that the only game we could play is that one game for a year. Suddenly, simple shallower games would have a negative connotation and the heavier, deeper games would have more value. So we value simplicity because we can always move on to the next game and complexity keeps us from moving on to the next game. I have a problem with this mentality. I also couldn't disagree more with the digital argument. I mean, digital is a great alternative in many situations where physical is impossible, but tactility is everything to me. Tactility is the beating heart of this hobby. If that doesn't matter, then every game would be better digitally. Some people might consider board gamers hipsters in this regard, but I think the distinction is real and meaningful. Thanks for watching!

My thing with heavy games, which was highlighted by the SU&SD fellas in their Terraforming Mars review, is that it's easy for the theme to get lost in the mechanics. Mars disappears, and it just becomes a numbers game where you are using cards to gain cubes to get more cards to get more cubes, etc. That's OK to an extent because we are here to play the game, the mechanics have to be thought of as the main course, but if I am going through the effort to set up and learn something this big, I really want to feel like I am rewarded by being taken away to another place. I don't always necessarily need a full narrative adventure on par with Jaws of the Lion, but at the very minimum, I want to feel like I am doing the themed action that a card says I'm doing, I don't want to feel like I'm just tapping a card to use it's numbers to affect other numbers. Big, deep, gaming experiences like this are so very appealing to me, I want to get lost in something, but will I actually feel like I am farming in Hallertau or just managing number tiles at the end of the day? I have a hard time getting lost in numbers and systems unless they are simple yet compelling. Magic the Gathering makes you feel like you really are throwing a fireball at someone, and it manages to do so, really just with numbers. That's really the essence of what I am looking for in a heavy game.

Excellent video and totally agree on the complex games... there are players like me that like that... even if we know we will not play the game as much as we wanted to.. but the idea of trying something complex and see how every complexity layer fits on top of the other is part of the joy to play... win or loose is not something I care a lot..... anyway... Love your point of view! ..

I will be honest I think complexity of a game does play a fairly big part on a solo game for me. I always play solo at evening after kids in bed and usually by that time I am exhausted and if kids sleep late I will feel very frustrating to play a game that requires long setup. Almost all of my games I will pay for inserts etc if I can setup the game quicker. So unfortunately for me I have to disagree on the complexity point. They do deduct points for me. Same issue with game duration I just can’t see myself playing a solo game 2.5 hours plus, it just won’t happen. So even if the game is amazing ends up it will not make my favourite because I just can’t table it. The other disagreement I have is on mage knight being a top solo game…the game just didn’t click with me and I did see some people also sharing concerns over the gameplay…so I wouldn’t quite call that a commonly acknowledged top solo game of all time… Don’t get me wrong shaggy, I love your channels and your videos. Big fan of your content and I do look at games you recommended. And I also appreciate these things different people feel differently. But I thought I should leave my remark here that certainly this time round these points are not true for me.

Really enjoyed your "heavy" game discussion. Heavy games with a great solo mode like Voidfall can be a good way for people to explore those types of games on their own, which might then increase their comfort level to sit down to a "heavy" multiplayer game at their local game night. Anachrony and Mage Knight did that for me. I wonder if some content creators might be a little biased against heavy games since they feel under pressure to put out regular videos, and a game like Voidfall can be a big time sink.

My only issue with voidfall after 4 play solo: the setup time especially with the retail is extremely long. I never managed to put a scenario ready in less than 30 minutes. I ordered an insert from folded, hope to spend less time zipping, unzipping, looking for tech and so on. The game feel very different that mage knight on the way you plan very far ahead a sequence on action to serve a long term (one era) and you have few need to adapt on the road. Mage knight feel more reacting to chaos and planning a sequence of action to more short term goal. But I may play it wrong although it work. Voidfall make you fall hard on mistake (like trickerion)
@TotallyTabled
@TotallyTabled 8 месяцев назад
Yeah, the planning is a few more steps ahead in Voidfall, but I'm still reacting to the chaos of the crisis deck. They are not the same game for sure. But it fills a similar bucket for me. The setup is about 30 min. for me, but I could see 20. I have it nicely organized in the box, so that is important. I just relax, but on a little show or some music, get a nice whiskey or tea, and set it up. I don't mind the time, really. Maybe it has something to do with being a parent and charishing every moment of peace that I can find. Thanks for watching!

Oh well I am a parent also but my setup have what I call extra hands of mess 😂 fortunately voidfall don’t have monster or dice so usually they don’t care. Anyway 2024 will certainly be a board game focus year for us (so much game found incoming), so I guess by playing more I will just find the setup easier over time.

I just recently bought this game and watched through your let's play to make sure I was playing it right, and man. I've played the first solo scenario twice now, using the same house and technologies just to really nail the playthrough and I had SO MUCH fun. That's one house and only nine techs available to me over two games. Both games played completely differently. I've been looking for a good solo game I can just sink into and for me, this is that game. I wasn't quite sure what I've been looking for, because I've played quite a lot of solo games recently searching for that perfect fit. Some games do feel needlessly complex with little to no payoff. And some games miss the mark. Like if they had taken the chance to go a little deeper it would have felt far more rewarding and worth the extra time. Voidfall balances this perfectly for me. Very stoked I finally have my answer for the sort of solo games I enjoy! Mage Knight is high on my list to get next, and I'll have to look into Frostpunk. I loved the video game, so I'll probably like that one too.

I've made solo playthroughs of both, so watching those might help. You might also want to check out my playthroughs of Robinson Crusoe, This War of Mine, and Halls of Hegra. They aren't exactly like Voidfall, but they are heavier games I enjoy. Thanks so much for watching!

One distinction worth making when covering complex “solo co-op” board games is which ones fall in (1) the push-your-luck, solve-the-puzzle category like Robinson Crusoe or This War of Mine, or in (2) the purely strategic category like Mage Knight, Spirit Island, Frostpunk, Voidfall.

Already mentioned it, but from everything I've seen, Voidfall is similar to circadians and utilizes Analysis Paralysis. I've been seeing Voidfall has people wanting to spend time formulating and strategizing long-term before taking a turn. I am very curious to get Voidfall and see/feel that first hand. But that's what circadians First Light is to me and I love it. Immense choice and long term directions you could go, with some turn by turn tactics to deal with those wrenches that get thrown in your strategy. And maybe? That's why it seems to get a hard time. After all Circadians is practically non existent yet made by the popular shem Phillips And people tend to view analysis paralysis as a negative. Eh. Just a thought. But, yeah, that's what Voidfall looks like to me.

There is a similarity in the civ building, plate spinning, resource managing aspect. Voidfall has a different feel overall as it is more goal oriented and requires more long term strategic planning. Through the Age has much shorter term planning, more reacting to the cards available and the actions of the other players. A lot more tactical and opportunistic play in Thru the Ages. They scratch a different itch for me ultimately.

I've always been a a huge fan of complex games, and found over the course of the last several years that discovering and learning them as a solo player was the perfect way for me to enjoy them. Playing solo lets you learn and play at your own pace without having to worry about taking too long for a turn, to grasp certain concepts and mechanics, and to enjoy the challenge and the experience in a way other players may find too slow. Learning an incredibly complex game with channels like yours is the only reason I have been able to dive into and enjoy so many of the heavier games I've thoroughly loved in recent years. Having an amazing teacher, and seeing demonstrations of a full game played out by the experts, truly helps players like me who need to better understand a game. Heavier games can be very intimidating for a lot of people, even people that have loved the hobby for ages. I'm super happy we live in a time when so much helpful content, and positive feedback about games like this exists and continues to thrive. Really looking forward to that top 100 solo games of all-time :)

I think complexity mostly (only?) works in solo games. In multiplayer games, complexity almost always implies multi-player solitaire with the associated high AP downtime
@TotallyTabled
@TotallyTabled 7 месяцев назад
I disagree with this. Complexity tends to imply high levels of player interaction -- war games, 4X, 18xx, games like TI4, War of the Ring, Food Chain Magnate, the Pax series, Madeira, the Terra Mystica series, recently Hegemony is an example -- Vital Lacerda games have a lot of player interaction. Multiplayer solitaire games tend towards medium weight -- the Rosenbergs and Felds, for example. And complexity can breed AP and downtime, but not necessarily. AP is usually a function of lack of player experience and flawed priorities rather than a function of the game itself, other than heavier games require more experience to grok. Complex euros are sometimes better at smaller player counts, but to say they only work as solos is going too far. Yeah, I'd rather play Voidfall solo, but part of the reason is because there are so many heavy games that play great at 2-3 players. Thanks for watching.

From what I'm hearing and seeing everywhere it's heavy on the positive side of Analysis Paralysis. Circadians First Light seems like that as well to me (with some worthy other legit specifics, like Circadians tries to supply turn by turn faster tactics) My point I guess is that stands out to me as a way to helping me make my decision to buy. Is that the kind of gameplay for me? Do I want to sit for great length forming my long-term strategies in my head, contemplating it all out. For me the answer is Yes and that's why I brought up Circadians first light. Circadians I find to be easy to get into. The complexity comes in me expanding my brain as, over multiple games, I hone, grow and improve my strategies. So I'm looking for an opportunity to buy Voidfall. And I highly recommend Circadians First Light. Which oddly got swept under the rug and I barely see any content or mention of it. And it's from Shem Phillips who has very popular games. Circadians has just immense choice and replayability in my opinion too.

Thanks for the great video and coverage you've given this game. The problem with complexity and game length is that they raise the stakes on what the game must offer to the players in order to justify the length/difficulty/setup time/etc. And as pattern-seeking beings, we tend to fall into patterns and traps that might make us overlook otherwise cool things because they don't fit into our often quickly referenced and likely crude mental model of what is worth our time. We are all guilty of this in one way or another - its human nature. And I'm sure that many who eschew most/all complex games are guilty of this too. But this game is definitely one that justifies its length/complexity/setup time/etc. if given the chance. The game is so smooth and well put together mechanically and the graphic design is quite excellent, allowing for quick internalization of its iconographic language with a play or two. In my opinion, it is the best Mindclash game to date. But it took me 3-5 plays to come to this conclusion - sadly an amount of attention that isn't often afforded these days with so many shiny things around to grab our attention.

I think the heavy games comparison is well stated. It would be like saying “I like sports”, then trashing everything baseball because you really like football, not sports. Board game reviewers trash heavier games because they really like a subset of the genre, not the whole genre. To me, weight is a positive…so I share your frustration (though your channel and a few others refeshingly do like the whole genre).

I rarely get to play it because it’s a hefty amount to take in due to the complexity playing it solo, however I’ve had roll and write games which have been more frustrating to learn due to unintuitive rules, poor rulebooks etc. Also, all this being said, now that I’ve learnt the rules for perseverance, it actually isn’t that complex to jump back into. It’s more of a mental barrier stopping me from diving back in which is a me problem not a design flaw! I think that’s the key point (like you mentioned), if the rulebook and ruleset provides the easiest way to learn and master the game, then you shouldn’t knock it or punish it for the sake of being a complex game. You should admire the complexity which ultimately highlights the level of clever design and interesting decisions. This review has really urged me to get perseverance back to the table :)

i agree with you and actually said it before, i think Voidfall solo/coop is the better version of the game. sure it adds another level of rules and complexity to the game, but it also improves the game imo. i do believe the same as you that it will be what stands the test of time when it comes to Voidfall. without the external pressures of the crisis board Voidfall is just a lesser game to me. plus the variability in the solo/coop mode is higher. the randomization of fallen houses and techs alone really mixes up how the game plays out even with the same Houses you play with in the same scenarios even if you used the same galactic events.

That's nice to hear. Thank you. I'm glad you're enjoying the channel. I'm a player of all types of games, so I'm a defender of all types. I've lately been a bit peeved by all the criticism of heavy games just for being heavy, as if these games shouldn't exist or shouldn't get attention. Next week I'm sure I'll be peeved by something completely different. :) I'm glad you got into Mage Knight. I'm also late to the party and still getting into it. Very happy I finally got it to the table. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for bringing this game to my attention. I judged it too quickly based in the general look. I found the art a bit "themeless" on the components and tiles (on video). As far as playing complexity, it's something I like, especially wben it's puzzly... However, I tend to get away from long & complex setup (and sometime learning). Maybe this one is not for me... But still, if it might be Mage Knight good, I might change my opinion! Seems like you planted something in my mind 😅...

Thank you for such a great speech! I still haven't finished voidfall video. The game is really complex. And I quite don't like so much iconographic even though it is very close to Lacerdas games. Still don't know would buy it even though it is being localised to Ukrainian language. I have bought This war of mine, Mage knight and Frostpunk because your comments and haven't played it yet as much as I would like. I came to gaming cause like sharing experience of board games with others. But others just don't like heavy games so I am more leaning towards solo now. And usually its surprises my friends that you would play games by yourself. It's hard to explain that I like learning this rules, finding something new and solving the puzzle even though I miss interaction with other players. Thank your channel! You are definitely one of few channels which teaches any game very naturally

I really appreciate those kind words. I have a gaming group where we usually play lighter games or medium weight because that is what they enjoy and they usually don't want to learn new things. So the heavy stuff is getting played solo more and more, and I'm really liking that. There are so many advantages to playing solo -- I think it is an essential part of the hobby. And people are starting to jump on board. They've been brainwashed into thinking board gaming is ONLY about social interaction. That is one aspect -- and a great one -- but far from the only one. Also, people tend to have trouble spending time with themselves, in their own minds. They always need distractions. That isn't healthy. Playing Voidfall solo was one of the best gaming experiences I had all last year. Eventually playing a board game solo will seem as normal as playing a video game solo. Change happens slowly sometimes. Thanks so much for watching!

Personally, complexity is definetly an asset I look for in a game. And I will wager it's almost a fundamental principle of solo boardgaming. You need to have some level of complexity in gaming in general, otherwise the experience is not enganging. In multiplayer games part of the complexity comes from the difficulty of predicting and being better than the other players, wich you dont have in a solo. Even party games need some complexity, just try to play Virtual Pursuit with questions for 5 year olds and see the fun you have.
@TotallyTabled

I agree with you to a certain extent. I am finding I like my solos either epic or quick little things for like a late night snack. And my multiplayer tastes are moving to the middle, with games that have some thinkiness but not too much to trigger AP. One great thing about solo play is the ability to tackle heavy and long games without having to worry about downtime or time constraints, so long as you have a space to set things up and leave them. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I was getting Gaia Project vibes watching the playthrough, but I don't recall that you mentioned it. Do you think that's a decent or a poor comparison?
@TotallyTabled
@TotallyTabled 7 месяцев назад
Feels very different from Gaia Project to me. Voidfall is far less abstract and on rails. The decision space is so tight in Gaia. Voidfall gives you the universe to chart your own path. Not saying either is better or worse, just they result in very different feelings as I play. But others might disagree. Thanks for watching!

So well said. I happen to like miniature dice rolling crawling games. These are often criticized for randomness and a narrow decision space. And that's exactly why I lile them. 😎 I also noticed a trend that camapaign games will be criticized for having lots of reading and/or not having enough world building. 😂

Yeah, it is easy to fall into the trap of judging a game for what you want it to be rather than what it is trying to do. I make that mistake as well. But when I see the most popular and successful board game reviewers seemingly doing this on purpose, I do get discouraged. But I'm optimistic and positive by nature -- which is considered suspect in this hobby, I know. Grumpy gamers make better reviewers I guess, but they have way less fun. :) Thanks for watching!

That is so wonderful to hear. I'm glad I helped in some small way. This hobby often requires a journey of discovery -- as we play more games, we slowly find out what we actually like. That journey can sometimes take us to unexpected places if we are open to trying new things and going outside our comfort zone. I'm happy you were able to discover a part of the hobby that brings you joy! Thanks for checking out the video!

Very odd that someone would 'attack' a board game for it's complexity. That's like saying, "I hate jazz because it's too complex!". No, you hate jazz because you don't enjoy listening to it.

I adore this design but there’s one thing that really really holds me back from loving the game. I just think it is providing too much choice. The full hand of cards being available from turn 1 is an absolute killer for me. That coupled with this game being almost entirely predictable really pushes too far for me. I just wish there would be few more guard rails to make the games faster. I don’t even think the game is super complex, it really isn’t but man when you sit there turn 1 you really are inclined to sit and think for a long time. It’s a chess like brain burn and I don’t like chess. Open information games like that are my Achilles heel. There simply are too many known variables for me to play this intuitively
@TotallyTabled
@TotallyTabled 8 месяцев назад
I hear what you are saying, but that is what I love about the design. Maybe a change in mindset would help? The blank page or blank canvas is intimidating until you realize there is no wrong move. Use your house's strengths as a guide, coupled with the heroic focuses, and the crisis cards and do what seems fun. Set a short term goal. Pick out a tech that looks cool. You don't need to analyze all possibilities. You can chart your own path. Thanks for watching!
@elqord.1118
@elqord.1118 8 месяцев назад
@@TotallyTabled I understand your view but is there really no wrong move? I actually there is an optimal way to play every scenario. When you lose a game the open information nature allows you to look back at every decision and understand where you made the wrong move even with crisis cards. I respect people's opinion and see why it is loved but to me this is a sandbox I struggle to embrace.
@TotallyTabled
@TotallyTabled 8 месяцев назад
@@elqord.1118 There's no wrong first move, but obviously you have to formulate and execute a solid plan. And the game gives you a lot of direction. At the start, look at your starting agenda and the Galactic Event scoring. Maximize those. In the playthrough I got points for pure regions and there was a lot of aggressive tech so I went military heavy and planned to seal the rift. Look at the agenda display. Pick one of those to get and maximize that scoring condition. What focuses and in what order do you need to play to grab that second agenda and get it played in the first cycle? That alone forms a solid foundation for a strategy. Read the advice on the back of your chosen house. That can also help guide you. This game isn't as sandboxy as you think. But it also doesn't force you to do just one thing. There are lots of paths to victory, lots of workable solutions based on the scoring cards you take. But the game might not be for you, that is okay as well. Thanks!
