This video explains the Dashew's breakthrough FPB yachts, and how they evolved from the most successful long distance sailing yachts ever built. Few would have predicted the success that awaited. This update of the original video will explain the principles on which the Dashew's yachts - sail and power - are based. With video, exquisite photography, and computer simulation, shot in some of the most beautiful cruising locations (French Polynesia, Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand, Mexico, the Caribbean, Bahamas, Canada, Newfoundland, Labrador, Greenland, Svalbard, and Antarctica) Linda and Steve lay it all out for you, while at the same time giving you a glimpse into the various FPB and sailing yachts with which they have been involved..

I see the solar panels, I was wondering if you have a diesel electric propulsion system? Also do you have a kite to take advantage of the trade winds on your non-sailboats. And, not knowing much about the rules and regulation of sailing, is there any size limits on boats that mandates having to have a crew.

State of the art props with significantly better speed and efficiency at the same rpms. I'm only ballparking it but I'm thinking it could add 2-3 knots cruising speed but the same efficiency at the original cruising speed of a ocean crossing trip.

I'm genuinely interested in hull/sailboat design and am contemplating a career shift. Is there any literature that you would recommend? Also, if it's not too much to ask, I'd like to know why sailboats don't employ more planing designs, when it seems to be so well developed in the speedboat industry. Is it simply a speed/weight calculation that make it impractical?
@DashewOffshore
@DashewOffshore 4 года назад
Design issue first. To plane requires a hull surface that is relatively flat, light weight, a large sail plan, and the stability to carry the sail. The power to weight ratio has to be very favorable as well. In a cruising yacht this means lots of beam, attention to weight management and payload, along with a deep keel, canting preferably, which then gets you into dagger boards to offset leeway. We are talking expensive, fussy to sail, and uncomfortable end results. Take a look at the Open 60s for a good example. Now some hydrodynamics...Sailing drag off the wind is made up from wave drag which is proportional to the square of boat speed, and wetted surface drag which goes up in direct relation to boat speed (linear). The. power which can be developed from the wind is a square function of wind speed. Now it gets interesting. The relationship between wave drag and wetted surface drag is controlled by the displacement length ratio. Higher DLRs have mainly wave drag at high speed. As the DLR drops wave drag becomes a smaller percentage. of the total. DLR is a function of the weight. of the vessel. and its water line length cubed. So a modest increase in LWL will have a huge impact on the wave drag/wetted surface drag relationship. Take a long, slender, hull form, with a low DLR and combine it with a moderate sized rig with efficient design, and you end up with a package that can create force from its apparent wind more quickly than the drag builds up. Our low DLR design has essentially linear drag increase as boat speed goes up. But the force in the wind goes up with the square of the wind velocity. Now throw in the change in apparent wind direction forward as the boat speed increases and the apparent wind speed both climbs and interacts with the rig at angles which enhance power. An ice boat is an extreme example of this, being able to clock five or more times wind speed. High performance multi hulls can get into the twice or more wind speed range. In the context of a modern, go anywhere, tough cruising yacht with modest draft, and normal systems, you can have your own apparent wind machine by simply lengthening the waterline. Take a look at the videos of Beowulf on this You-Tube channel to see what I am talking about. About the business of yacht design, it is not easy, and if you are good enough to make it in this game your talents and hard work would probably be better aimed at another field of endeavor. But some times you have no choice. If this your situation, then my advice is to spend a five or ten years actually out there cruising. On larger yachts as crew, and on your own vessel as well. This experience will provide you with a real world foundation against which you can make the many trade off decisions that are a part of yacht design and construction. As to reading material, you might start with four of our books, available now as free PDF downloads on SetSail.com. Good Luck!

This boat would be ideal if it had all electric engines and full solar array with hydro charger on full lithium ion batteries. Would that be possible to cross oceans?
@DashewOffshore
@DashewOffshore 4 года назад
We have taken solar charging to the practical limit in the context of maximum reliability for our type of cruising. Cochise has 16 of the most efficient commercial solar panels, producing 345 watts each, and sufficient power to typically run all systems, including air conditioning at anchor. But solar for propulsion is a different s story. Too many tradeoffs for our taste. As to batteries, we prefer batteries which do not require micro processors for charging control. That leaves Lion batteries out. Maybe some day in the future this will change.

Hello Road: There are a lot of variables, but lets say you go from New York to Kinsale, Ireland, and allow 2700 nm for the passage. If you are on Wind Horse, and are patient, waiting for a high to develop and then ride the Gulf Stream and high circulation (-north side), you will average 11 knots, burning 6 .5 gallons of fuel per hour. You will have topped the tanks off at the fishboat fuel dock o maybe paid $2.00 per gallon.So 245 hours at /hour, $13.00, or $6375, Play the weather just right and you could shave 1/3rd.

@DashewOffshore
@DashewOffshore 4 года назад
Hi Roderick: Your comment reminds me of s discussion I had with my Dad in 1975. We had just purchased Intermezzo, a 50' ketch. She had a large cockpit and an even larger dodger covering the cockpit. That dodger was ugly as sin and it was high on my must do list. My idea was a minimal pram hood over the companionway. Much less offensive aesthetically, and almost no drag. When I explained this to my Dad, he took it in, and then a couple of hours later suggested I hold off on the change until we had used the boat a while. "You only see the dodger when you are off the boat. You will enjoy the benefits a lot more of the time." He was right of course. The Matrix deck might be the ultimate expression of my Dad's advice. Yes, it adds windage and we can see the fuel meters react in headwinds. But it also acts as sail area in a good breeze downwind, although overall, it is a net negative in this regard. And you will get no argument from me that a smaller structure would look better. Against all of this we have to weigh the benefits. I can tell you with certainty that the Matrix deck totally transforms the FPB 78 for us. Rather than being just where we stand watch, it has become our prime entertainment area, makes it possible for us and crew, or long term guests to have separate space, is where we exercise, and more often than not is where we set up the office. You will find the same response from the five other owners of the FPBs with Matrix decks.
